The first European excursion for The Pink Fairies saw them blowing amps, money and minds at the three-day Ruisrock Festival in Turku, Northern Finland in 1971. Recorded by the state radio station, the three-piece, now without Twink, consisted of Russell Hunter on drums, Paul Rudolph on guitar and vocals, and Duncan Sanderson on bass. Unleashing heavy, acid-drenched jams on the audience,

One morning, as Stuart Lamour was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that despite only a minor insertion wound his right hand had begun to resemble not so much the one he went to sleep with, but the proboscis of the ant which had bitten him. Marsha Hunt - Oh, no! Not the Beast Day! Being of a generally positive disposition he went about his day as if this were a normal occurrence, which would eventually dissipate. The first signs of something inherently [...]
Draw a mouse, go to jail. That, it seemed, was the ultimate conclusion of a case that wended its way throughout the 1970s from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to the Supreme Court and back. In an age of easy and ubiquitous copying, that case matters more now than ever. [...]
A nine-minute psychedelic blast through the surf instrumental…plus lyrics.
Feels a little like the morning after the prom around here to be honest. The 3rd Annual Record Store Day is in the books and by all of the accounts I've witnessed and read, 'twas quite a success indeed. We've got the last batch of RSD2010 vinyl from our giveaways lined up to ship and with that, we'll have dispatched our duties for another year. But we're not going anywhere—we'll still be bringing you what you've [...]

Tavis Smiley : I want to talk about the song, "Dreamer," that you dedicate to Dick (Gregory). Prince: Oh, well, when I saw the "State of the Black Union," Dick Gregory really moved me and a lot of my friends. I show it to everybody who comes over the house, especially White folks, because they need to hear that, so that they know more about all of us. Because what he said affects all of us. He said something that really hit home [...]
Lyrics are important, but it's a shame the art of the hit instrumental seems to have been lost. Turn on oldies radio and from Booker T. to the Ventures, instrumental guitar jams pop up and now and again. The instrumental is on death's door, but certain segments of the indie aesthetic are trying to revive it. Explosions in the Sky is an all-instrument post-rock band (whatever that means), and Andrew Bird released an instrumental disc to accompany his recent Noble Bird . While we wait to see whether the instrumental makes a comeback, let's take [...]

(I know this is a little late today, but it's totally worth the wait, promise. Another edition of Not New Music Tuesdays from TC. Enjoy!--SR) Pink Fairies - Kings of Oblivion (1973, Polydor) Pink Fairies grew out of late '60s British weirdos The Deviants when their singer, Mick Farris, left the band and was replaced by ex-Pretty Things drummer Twink. After two records and an obscene amount of alcohol and drugs, Twink was out, replaced by guitarist Larry Wallis , who had just [...]

The Pink Fairies were from the same trashy underbelly of English underground rock as the Edgar Broughton Band, the Deviants, Hawkwind, Arthur Brown, and Gong. Twink, one of the band's founders, had been in the beat era Fairies, The In-Crowd, Tomorrow, the Pretty Things, and he even managed to released a great solo album in 1970, prior to this. The Pink Fairies were special, a truly dynamic band that was England's very own MC5. They released 3 albums during the early 70's, and while their true swan song, Kings Of Oblivion, is usually cited as their [...]

[MP3] Generation X – "100 Punks Rule" That first album by Billy and the boys was awesome. Here's my favorite track. [MP3] The Jam – "Saturday's Kids" I really need to devote an entire entry on the Jam. Until then...... [MP3] Hoodoo Gurus – "I Want You Back" This is from their 1983 Stoneage Romeos debut disc – it spent quite bit o' time on my turntable back in college. [...]
