Plain and simple, one of my top three bands. Love everything they do. If you don't know them , you should give them a try. Listen: Pink Martini ∞ Splendor In The Grass Week One: The Two Man Gentlemen Band Week Two: David Rawlings Machine
One of the standout performances when we saw Pink Martini last year was the violinist, Nicholas Crosa, doing a solo in Praeludium & Allegro. Here's a video of that performance in Portland ....it was just jaw dropping! Can't wait for the new album here! Pre order "Splendor in the Grass" here We are so fortunate to have them in Portland. Check out the amazing bios/backgrounds from this band's members here. [...]

Over the course of three superb albums that have sold more than two million copies worldwide, Portland, Oregon's mucho-eclectic outfit Pink Martini have served as international music tour guides imbuing a diverse collection of unpredictable influences ranging from Latin infused sambas, 30's orchestrated standards, Cuban jazz and lounge-y torch ballads. "I'd call our music old fashioned pop with a global perspective," says pianist and co-founder Thomas Lauderdale, who is also the band leader. "It has that feeling of the atmosphere of the 30s, 40s, 50s, early 60s, but global in scope." [...]

melophobe was fortunate enough to have photographer Angel Priest on hand as Portland's Pink Martini helped celebrate Oregon's sesquicentennial with a rousing performance of Oregon! Oregon!. The basic plot revolves around two 1859 explorers, whose encounter with a witch, results in Oregon's birth, with the catch that it will be swept into a bottle 100 years later without citizen intervention. Thomas Lauderdale helped create the new fourth act of this curious tale, and from Angel's photos, it looked like an incredible show! DOWNLOAD: Pink Martini - Tempo Perdido (MP3) pink martini [...]
I haven't purchased much new Christmas music this year, but I have been pleasantly surprised by what I did! Visit the blog to hear some great music! First, on a whim induced perhaps by an impending infusion of caffeine, I bought this year's holiday collection from Starbucks, Winter Wonderland . These collections are often hit or miss, but more often both, with some good tracks interspersed among bad ones. Not so for this collection. Pink [...]

If you like indie rock you may have noticed a trend. Every musician on the planet has lived in Portland. Okay that's an exaggeration, but it seems like a huge number of indie bands and icons are Stumptown alumni. From Elliott Smith to the Decemberists to the Dandy Warhols, Portland is bringing the indie rock heavies. Some musicians move here from elsewhere, like Sleater-Kinney or the The Shins. Others, like Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, are Portlanders who go elsewhere to rock. Even "Louie, Louie" was written there. While you are surely familiar with Stephen Malkmus, there are [...]

Continuing to re-up previous material from undomondo history, here are tracks from the Sami folk band Adjagas , last years phenomenal math-prog outfit Battles , German electronic pop artist Marbert Rocel, a cheerful Arabic song by Pink Martini , oldschool dub from Bullwackies All Stars , soulful music from Ben Westbeech and the unforgettable Ederlezi from Balkan composer Goran Bregovic . A total hodge podge! Adjagas - Dolgematki Adjagas - Guoros Fatnasat Battles - Racein [...]
I haven't shared anything in a long time, so I want to post some songs that I like. They just happen to involve the same theme. They are all instrumental, so I suppose they could go in last week's theme. 3 Different Takes on Circuses and Carnivals 人生のメリゴランド (Merry-Go-Round of Life) by Joe Hisaishi from the Howl's Moving Castle OST [...]

Despite my inability to understand the lyrics of (most) world music, sometimes an exotic beat is just the thing. Featured below are upbeat selections from some of my favorite international artists. First up, Gotan Project have proven their distinguished spot on the electronica scene with addictive numbers like "Diferente," infusing jazz sounds with dance music elements and a Latin flair to amazing effect. Pizzicato Five have quickly become one of my favorites since I discovered them about two months ago. The ridiculously catchy "Week-End" is an upbeat jaunt that brings incorporates bossa nova into their already highly quirky pop style. [...]

For over ten years, China Forbes has lent her voice and her songwriting talents as the frontwoman for the unique and exquisite sounds of Pink Martini , a multi-genre musical ensemble spearheaded by Thomas M. Lauderdale, a pianist to whom Forbes befriended in the early-90's as they were attending Harvard University. (more...)
