I don't usually do this, but I'm going to go ahead and quote the email I received informing me about Steven McBean's latest album, Outside Love . "Oh hello, internet. It's us, Jagjaguwar. We've been hanging out down by the fire, sipping brandy and anticipating sharing some Outside Love with you. The new song is called "Vampire", and we think it'll send shivers under your dress. Just don't take our word for it. Download here and post at your leisure. We love leisure." Well, there you have it, [...]

Black Mountain's Steve McBean is back with another Pink Mountaintops release Outside Love (out May 5th). Check out the first track VAMPIRE Black Mountain's "In The Future" was on my Top 10 last year....by the sounds of Vampire, Outside Love is a contender. How do you do it?! Friends and family who contributed to or appear on "Outside Love", in no particular order, include Sophie Trudeau (A Silver Mt. Zion, Godspeed You! Black Emperor), Ted Bois (Destroyer), Jesse Sykes (Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, sunnO)))), Phil Wandscher (Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, [...]

Steve McBean is my homeboy. Dude spits out records of worth each and every time. I've been with Black Mountain since the beginning, and had the first Pink Mountaintops release in 2004. I bought into it just as much as BM. The lag time between Black Mountain's eponymous debut and In the Future would have been a much more grueling marathon without the Pink Mountaintops work McBean released. A prolific artist, I suppose, is one who can span multiple genres and create noteworthy art without sticking to securely defined perameters. What's so refreshing about Pink Mountaintops is that [...]

Pink Mountaintops have a new album called Outside Love coming out on May 5th via Jagjaguwar. You may know Steve McBean (above) from his other band, Black Mountain. For those familiar with Black Mountain, you may be expecting some heavy psychedelic rock. "Vampire" is surprisingly smooth with McBean's voice accompanied mostly by an acoustic guitar. More about the album: The ten songs on Outside Love are about or influenced by weddings in Montreal, winter, Pink Floyd's The Final Cut, Christmas albums, that one Exile song and that one Echo and the Bunnymen [...]

Pink Mountaintops , aka Stephen McBean, is about to release his latest album, 'Outside Love'. Apparently the ten songs on 'Outside Love' are about or influenced by weddings in Montreal, winter, Pink Floyd's The Final Cut, Christmas albums, that one Exile song and that one Echo and the Bunnymen song, the Bermuda Triangle, being depressed in the sunshine, people who haven't made out yet but will in the future, The Everly Brothers, clowns in the ceilings, and bedrooms where skinheads used to live. They are songs of love and hate that read like a Danielle Steele romance [...]

Pink Mountaintops - Vampire

According to the new song from Pink Mountaintops [ MySpace ], you can't kill the heart of Steve McBean 's love, but why the hell would you want to? Honestly, you "can't go wrong with McBean". If the haunting, acoustic guitar in the lead single, "Vampire," is a sampling of what is to come on his upcoming LP, Outside Love , you'll be blown the eff away. Since the album's release announcement in February ( Outside Love is out May 5th!), we've waited patiently for more details and now we have some, [...]

Autumn de Wilde There might be question marks around whether or not we'll see 2009 editions of big Toronto events like V Fest , but for the eighth year running, the city will host Over The Top Fest in May and showcase an eclectic range of acts in clubs around the city for a weekend in May, this year the 21st through the 24th. The official website is still having the finishing touches put on it but the lineup was announced last week at Stille Post and, as expected, there's a whole [...]
Stephen McBean must be a huge fan of mountains. His two largest creative outlets-- Black Mountain and Pink Mountaintops--are named after 'em. Last year, McBean surprised Black Mountain fans with a braver and more adventurous sound. The band built some pretty proggy arrangements that got them a slew of positive reviews. It seems Pink Mountain tops are undergoing some changes, too, but not in the same sense as Black Mountain. It seems Pink Mountaintops may be throwing their fuzzy, lo-fi poppery to the curb in favor of a cleaner sound. Check it for yourself: [...]
