As far as we can tell, the newly launched 100 Years Of Solid Dudes is yet another project from the Phillytronic dance floor wrecking crew collective of the Making Time associated Pink Skull , Adam Sparkles and the Broadzilla DJ's AKA the Hypercage Record Club . Head over here to download a 44 minute "car-crash sample symphony" that contextualizes Aretha Franklin, the Ides of March, Elvis Costello, Bowie and dozens of more samples into one long funky massive mix, as well as releases from Wooden [...]
Yibn has just posted up the latest in his Amalgam mix series. What can we say, the dude knows how to throw down different tunes. This month's mix has some jams from DiskJokke, Djedjotronic, Surkin, and many more. Hailing from Tampa, this music enthusiast began his delve into electronic music as a very young age. Some even whisper of seeing him running around the UCF campus in body paint promoting Boys Noize. As for now he can be caught DJing here and there throughout Tampa searching for a residency and performing in the style of [...]

I love Pink Skull with a deep, weird brotherly love. We are kin because (like yours truly) they emerged from the pre-millenial electronic sludge of Philadelphian sub-culture. From the pre-social network flyer days and cultural ooze of Spaceboy & 611 Records , the sleaze of Silk City and the early days of Making Time at Transit. In the early days, they made mix-tapes and mashups that sounded like turning on a dozen boomboxes on different radio stations and their earliest recordings were the loopy equivalent of swimming in [...]

Martas Asinis - Sniegaviri ( Hamilton Calhoun remix) You’d probably recognize my friend Laris Kreslins ( Mācītājs on Acid/The Phone ) as the only hip young dude ever tending bar at the Latvian Society here in Northern Liberties in Philadelphia. Currently he’s out in his home country chillin’ w family, but before he left, h e teamed up with his mate Justin Geller ( Pink Skull ) to form a this project as “just another excuse for us to hang out with one another and randomly remix things [...]

CHECK OUT my full Village Voice Pazz and Jop list HERE (First off, let me just unequivocably state that the album, by Tune-Yards, that won the poll this year is a simmering piece of DOGSHIT. Thanks for this ... Continue reading

Photo by John Vettese For this month’s Key Studio Video Session, we profiled Pink Skull , the Philladelphia indie-dance quintet that, last year, released its third album, Psychic Welfare , on RVNG Int'l Records. In our video, band leaders Julian Grefe and J.G. Geller talk about bridging the divide between hooky pop songs and expansive disco epics, the growth of the electronica scene in Philadelphia, and the origins of their "music for record-store nerds." Watch the video below and download their performance from December's Key Studio Sessions Live concert at Johnny Brenda's. [...]

Photo by Shane McCauley Earlier this week, we interviewed Summer Fiction and Attia Taylor , two of the three acts performing at this Friday night's Key Studio Sessions Live concert at Johnny Brenda's. For Pink Skull —the DJ-and-producer duo of Julian Grefe and Justin Geller—however, we decided to do something a little different. Grefe and Geller spend a good amount of time in Pink Skull mixing elements of ’70s disco, ’80s new wave, and ’00s dance pop, so we asked them to put together a mixtape for us. They agreed, and gave us [...]

Recently we have been delivering quite a few mixtapes into the blogosphere via this portal. This has both delighted and dismayed some of you, dear readers. The delight, we are happy to hear, is from your enjoyment of the mixtapes. The dismay is from our probably rather mean habit of making you guess the tracklist in the comments. This post should bring you some light relief on the tracks featured in the slower than light mixtape from 8th October . Happiness is an odd thing to try [...]
