Kolkata experimental rock act PINKNOISE comes back to Mumbai to play at Hard Rock Cafe on Thursday, Feb 9 . We caught up with frontlady Jayashree Singh who filled us in on what the audience can expect from Thursday night's set. PINKNOISE's latest EP, called The Dance Of The Diaspora , will be the main focus of the performance. "The EP has never been performed in Mumbai," explains Singh, "so that will be something new for the audiences. Since Hard Rock requires a band to play for an hour and 45 minutes, we will also be playing [...]

Facebook / pinknoiseny.bandcamp.com/ When Holly Miranda suggests a band it's wise to check them out (even if it's taken me approx eight weeks to finish this write-up!). That's exactly what happened with Brooklyn based (via Tel Aviv) Pink Noise . The connections to Holly are there, she adds some additional vocals on the their debut EP, 'Here is Happiness' and it's produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek (who also produced The Magician's Private Library), though I'm not liking this purely because I love HM, I'm liking this because it's bloody great. [...]

Bangalore downtempo act Sulk Station played Counter Culture, Bangalore on Saturday, August 6 alongside TL Mazumdar and Jivraj Singh (of PINKNOISE ). Sulk Station played The Big Junction Jam festival last month (photos here ) and seemed more confident on the back of that gig. TL Mazumdar and Jivraj Singh played an improvisational set. Mazumdar contributed with Rn'B-ish vocals while Singh doubled on the electronic setup as well as the drums. Photos by Abhimanyu Ghoshal Sulk Station, TL Mazumdar and [...]

A picture-perfect setting can only get you through the weekend, but making it a memorable experience takes a lot more. Anuj Gupta brings us an attendee's view of the recently concluded Escape Festival in Naukuchiatal. Advertised as " 3 Days. 3 Stages. Over 200 Artists. ", the Escape Festival's claims were much larger than reality. The festival wasn't exactly a multi-stage festival, but instead, each stage ran for a part of the day before all programming moved to another stage. The total number of artists performing was approximately 30, a sum total of [...]

The third edition of the Escape Festival was held at Naukuchiatal last weekend, between May 20 and 22. Escape is one of the few Indian "music festivals" that stays true to its claim - the experience for attendees isn't just about the music. Inclement weather meant that the seven-hour journey from New Delhi to Naukuchiatal took us 15 hours. It also meant that the first day of the festival was rained out completely, and the event was reduced to one stage down from three. The setting was picture-perfect; the lake, [...]

The festival will feature three stages for the genres of jazz/fusion, rock/electronica and "experimental/chill." The lineup announced thus far has some fairly prominent names like Ranjit Barot, Five8 , Teddy Boy Kill , menwhopause (pictured above), Indigo Children , PINKNOISE , and Ashwin (from Jalebee Cartel ). The ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) has been responsible for bringing brilliant international acts down to the country from time to time. In association with Seher, they recently organized the annual South Asian Bands Festival. This April, they're hosting a jazz festival in the capital featuring quality international and Indian music. This three-day festival features acclaimed Italian pianists, Indian guitarists, French funk bands, Canadian saxophonists, German jazz improv trios, and bass-less Scottish electro-jazz acts. This festival also marks the debut of PINKNOISE guitarist Amyt Datta's solo project, temporarily named Fractal (pictured). [...]

The Pink Noise-Toad Got a message from Mark of The Pink Noise regarding a re-issue of the album Gilded Flowers. Look for the remastered release of Gilded Flowers on LP which is said to sound 10 times better than the cassette or WFMU posted songs. The 1st track Shy guy beach is really good and weird and kind of hilarious. The Toad sounds like a combo of Thurston Moore, Beck, and The Velvet Underground all throw together in a lo-fi [...]

On January 14, The Radha Thomas Quartet and Kolkata rock act PINKNOISE played the UB City Amphitheatre as part of the Bangalore Habba. We were there. It was a smoky-voiced evening at the open air UB City amphitheatre on the first night of the Bengaluru Habba; a small stage with eight LED spotlights pointed at the four-piece sessions-supergroup that was The Radha Thomas quartet. The band comprising Adrian D'Souza on drums, Karl Peters on bass, Sanjay Divecha on guitars, and fronted by Radha Thomas made for a whiskeyed beginning to the city's [...]

She's slipping fast / Into the past / how much longer will the nightmare last? Kolkata experimental rock act PINKNOISE, who played the Dewarists Stage at the Bacardi NH7 Weekender, have released the first in their series of ten live videos, performing songs from their EP The Dance of the Diaspora (one of our top EPs of the year ), at the venue Big Ben. Vocalist Jayashree Singh sings interludes in warbling tremolos with layers that appear and disappear at will under her vocal effects pedals, and dives into Tamil choruses [...]
This review comes fashionably late, I admit. But I guess it still comes in a perfect timing, and I shall explain why in a second. I've known the music of Itamar Ziegler, an Israeli musician who residents in NYC for 15 years or so - for a pretty long time. I was fortunate enough to work in [...]

At 3pm on December 12, day three of the Bacardi NH7 Weekender , New Delhi band Projekt S played a short set to open The Dewarists Stage. The band is comprised of Advaita members Suhail Yusuf Khan and Aman Singh Rathore, along with singer-songwriter Donn Bhat. They were followed by Hindi rock act Faridkot who played a five-song set after their slot was advanced by half an hour. They played tracks like 'Laila' and 'Beparwah Sanam', and were met with an approving, enthusiastic crowd. Kolkata band PINKNOISE followed with an impressive [...]

by teepoo Milton is the end of the GO Bus line for me if I accidentally fell asleep on the bus and got lost. It's also the birthplace of The Most Serene Republic. They're a little bit like Broken Social Scene and Young Galaxy, full of a brass instruments and lush lyrics. Pink Noise comes off their 6 song EP Fantastik Impossiblis released on their own label called "Home of the Rebels". I'm a little disappointed I missed their show few days ago! [...]

Australian beatboxer Dub FX played a surprise opening set at the Garden of Five Senses, New Delhi for the launch of a new music project by whisky brand Dewar's. The beatboxer, who kicks off his India tour tomorrow, performed a short, three-song set with cohort Flower Fairy before making way for six of the country's top axemen. Ehsaan Noorani, Rudy Wallang (of Soulmate ), Warren Mendonsa (of Blackstratblues ), Bruce Lee Mani (of Thermal And A Quarter ), Amyt Datta (of PINKNOISE ) and Sanjay Divecha played a one-night-only collab [...]
This new electronica avatar of Kolkata experimental rock act PINKNOISE is surprisingly refreshing; the evolution of the same being less trial-and-error, more measured . The band has been performing at recent gigs sans drumkit, with Jivraj Singh manning an electronics station transforming the sound of the band considerably. Proof of the same is in this latest of Singh's editing machinations. The band's recent Pubrockfest gig at Turquoise Cottage, New Delhi featured a performance of the song 'Terrified'. The song was shot on video by photographer Shiv Ahuja (keyboardist of New Delhi band Five8 ). [...]

Making phantom creeps sigh The Pink Noise's sound is inhabited by a swarm of ill-feeling mega drone guitar and shitty drum machine, topped with warped vocals. Distortion reigns king, and Mark (guitar, electronics and vocals), Shub (bass and synth) and Brett (drums)'s sound is definitely one of the scuzziest around. But the friends of fellow Canadians Aids Wolf have an inherent pop sensibility buried beneath all the fuzz, and sometimes even an '80s naiveté splattered across their psychedelic punk. 'Pure Candy' has a weird [...]
Kolkata rock act Skinny Alle y has been uploading absolutely random minute-long video clips taken on their Flip camera , every few days or so for the past month. These snippets from the life of the band, include conversations on the way to gigs, vocalist Jayashree Singh gushing over a caterpillar, band members discovering the awesomeness that is Bappi's tribute to MJ , and more. Each video links back to their website at the end. The pretty well produced clips are the brainchild of Alley drummer Jivraj Singh. The latest [...]
What a treat. Hands down, no one picks em like Miss Lady Kier. She posted an old school set full of disco acid house goodness on her Facebook profile via Mixcloud. As most of us know, Kier tours frequently mostly DJing. Though she continues to write and produce original music she rarely plays those plays [...]
