Avast: Mounties take down "pirate"

Rajdeep Singh Ramgotra has been charged with copyright offences after "Canada's largest piracy raid": The RCMP raided the Pembina Highway offices of Audiomaxxx the morning of March 5, 2008, where police seized about 100,000 pirated CDs and DVDs that were labelled and ready for shipment. There's a video report - one of the few things remaining on YouTube - which claims: the operation was burning over 11,000 discs a day, then distributing them in Canada, Europe, Central America and the Carribean. Which seems odd for all [...]

Remember When Radio Was Going to Destroy the Record Industry?

Remember When Radio Was Going to Destroy the Record Industry? From the front page of PirateBay , though the cartoon is now gone.

I know I'll make you yell, scream and holler for more / Yes, Yes, y'all

The Torrent Bay trial is fascinating and has provided the recording industry with an fairly high profile outlet for some of it's more outrageous claims, most of which either don't stand up to heavy scrutiny or analysis. There has been much written about the decline of the dollar value (although not the unit numbers, which are on the rise, giving substance to part of the below story) of the

At The Pirate Bay Trial, No One Wins [I Saw A Pirate Bay Sticker On A Cadillac]

At The Pirate Bay Trial, No One Wins [I Saw A Pirate Bay Sticker On A Cadillac] In 1969, seven people involved on the yippie side of the riots at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago were put on trial on anti-riot charges slipped into the Civil Rights Act of 1968. The defendants decided to "put the system on trial," as it were, and consistently disrupted courtroom proceedings, which many considered (perhaps rightly) to be a mockery. The net effect may not necessarily have been positive, as Rick Perlstein argues in Nixonland , but while the methods were questionable, the cause was undoubtedly sound. Some 40 years later, we have another trial, with the defendants employing [...]

Bonnie Prince this is a post about Bonnie Prince Billy Billy

The Phoenix New Times was all set to review the Bonnie Prince Billy album . Trouble is, the record label decided to scupper things: I loaded the disc in to my iTunes to listen to -- as I do for a living -- and was digging the first track "Beware Your Only Friend" when a voice broke in to assure I was "enjoying a promotional copy of Beware by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy." Before the first song was even over, I was reminded again: "You are enjoying a promotional copy of Beware by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy." Again and [...]

Little Man Tate takes on the pirates

Skint have come up with a plan to protect the new Little Man Tate against the threat of illegal filesharers - by, erm, not letting anyone have the record before it goes on sale : Little Man Tate's I Am Alive comes with a ticket to the band's headline show at Rotherham's 4000 capacity Magna venue on the March 28. In an added bid to reduce bootlegging, the single will not be promoted to the radio or press until the day of its release. Although the suspicion would have to be that all this would [...]

Pirating the 2009 Oscars

Andy Baio has published his annual report on how many Oscar nominated films are available online in pirated versions . Almost all of them. Out of 26 nominated films, an incredible 23 films are already available in DVD quality on nomination day, ripped either from the screeners or the retail DVDs. This is the highest percentage since I started tracking. Since Andy posted this, Australia has shown up online from a screener, which means that as of right now 24 of the 26 Oscar nominated films have leaked online. Not [...]

Franz Ferdinand decide they don't like pirates after all

Back in August 2007, the BBC released a collection of cover versions to mark Radio 1's 40th birthday. Franz Ferdinand suggested that, rather than buying it, it would be more apt to help yourself : "The whole shabang doesn't appear to be for charity so point your browsers towards Limewire soon, kiddies!" the band said in a statement. It's all fun and games until... oh, it's your own label whose music is being pirated. Now, the band are sending WebSheriff after fans who have posted Tonight onto the torrents: On behalf [...]

ISP tells RIAA: happy to help, where do we send the bill?

Given that the brilliant new idea from the RIAA is instead of wasting millions suing people, getting the ISPs to police copyrights, it's perhaps unsurprising that ISPs are asking exactly how the RIAA intends to pay for this service : Jerry Scroggin is the owner of Bayou Internet and Communications(BIC), a small ISP based in Monroe, Louisiana with around 11,000 small business, residential, and municipal customers. BIC already receives notifications from the RIAA each month, and each time"I ask for their billing address," Scroggin told CNET. "Usually, I never hear back." Scroggin understands the labels' [...]

RIAA & ISPs Team Up Against Piracy

Lets not have any illusions now, piracy is indeed illegal, and it is also wrong. We don???t condone piracy, but we don???t support the elimination of Internet freedom. Though, the issue may not be immediately on radar, one has to worry that when corporations and ISPs, which are corporations, team up that some thing bad is going to happen. Though at least the random legal scare tactics are coming to a halt. The new plan has ISPs sending a pre-written letter to any one who violates certain restrictions. The letter is for, apparently, any one who seems to [...]

The Web Sheriff: Questions Answered, Questions Remain [Long Arm Of The Law]

Long have I wondered as to the true identity of the mysterious MP3 blog British bulldog the Web Sheriff. I knew that "he" was British. I knew "he" was often quite funny in his takedown posts. I knew that "he" was employed by a number of the big indies to ferret out leaks in the blog world. And that was about it?. Was this dapper industry constable one person, like Shakespeare, or multiple people, like Shakespeare? I kind of imagined "him" like John Cleese's sheriff from Silverado : charming at first, but you still don't want to shoot anybody [...]

Is it real, or is it Memorex

For reasons that aren't entirely clear, scientists at the University of Granada have come up with a way of telling the difference between "genuine" and "pirated" CDs: Through the new technique proposed by the scientists of the Department of Optics of the UGR it is possible to identify if a CD has been recorded using a method or a device different to those used in industrial processes, which allows to differentiate between original CDs and copies. This technique uses the phenomenon of light diffraction on a CD surface to appreciate the differences between original and bootleg [...]

College West Crowd Pleaser DJ Medley, talks to SalciousSound.com! DJ Medley has been on the grind in Toronto for about eight years now. With Medley on the ones and twos, the night has become one of the busiest on College West. Music Blogs and Piracy Issues.

Hey people! I want to take some time and discuss a topic which is quite important to me. The reason I bring this up is quite a funny incident that happened to our good friend PurePat . The other day PurePat recieved quite a funny Myspace mail from The Clubbers, the production duo consisting of Thomas Schwarz and Fausto Fanizza. The mail stated boldly: -Try to upload our tracks on zippyshare again and I'll come to cut your balls off! [...]

The Conquering Of OiNK Was Just The Beginning: Behold, Some New RIAA-Backed Legislation [The Law]

The Conquering Of OiNK Was Just The Beginning: Behold, Some New RIAA-Backed Legislation [The Law] I wouldn't describe myself as being comforted by the fact that a new piece of RIAA-backed legislation is heading through Congress, particularly since the bill would create an office within the White House for someone called the "IP Enforcement Coordinator." But even though I'm a voter, the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Act made it through the Senate Judiciary Committee today by a vote of 14 to 4. Of course, the music industry's trade association was thrilled, describing the bill as "a welcome verse in a great song," while the American Library Association was less excited, stating "There is [...]

Noel Gallagher speaks about P2P and Internet Piracy

Noel Gallagher speaks about P2P and Internet Piracy Noel Gallagher, the Oasis lead guitarist, semi-frontman and overall douche-bag, paid Zane Lowe a visit the other day, at the latter's B BC Radio 1 show which he moderates. There, Noel talked about Jay-Z' s response to the Glastonbury scandel, as he listened to the Oasis dis song Jockin' Jay-Z for the first time,' stupid informed journalists who ask him about his latest album being leaked and also rudely jokingly encourages people to rip off other's people music, as long as it's not Oasis of course. [...]

R.I.P. DRM

That's Digital Rights Management. As a refresher, DRM is coding built into media files that limits the number of users that can access/play that file. Sometimes, as in the case of iTunes music store, a song I buy can be played on up to four other devices that I "authorize". For instance, I have three Macs, an iPod and now an iPhone. I can't send you an iTunes Music Store purchase with my iTunes password, as my devices use up my 5 licenses. Bummer, right? Apple and others set this up their music stores like this so they'd play [...]

Joss Stone on Music Piracy: “Yeah, I love it. I think it's brilliant…R 21; Yep, that's a quote. In an interview , when asked what she though of piracy and mp3's and the internet, she said "Yeah, I love it. I think it's brilliant and I'll tell you why...". Read more at TorrentFreak .

Piracy

Piracy Piracy is bad, kids. There's nothing bad about Germany's finest ska band, Piracy, though. I actually think I'm in love with them. This is the way I felt when I first heard Ska-P. Piracy Almost Ruins Chicane [news]

Piracy Almost Ruins Chicane [news] Having a number 1 hit in the U.K. and worldwide success with other songs, you’d figure that Chicane would be happy. But an album leaked to the internet nearly ruined the up and coming act. Nick Bracegirdle , who is Chicane , was finishing up his third album, Easy To Assemble. The album was leaked on line, and one Russian counterfitter sold thousands of illegal copies by himself. He is now self-financing his next album, taking a big chance. "I've invested close to $400,000 so far, raised [...]
