Words by Brendan I like The Happy Hollows so much that the opening guitar/bass riff to "Faces" is my ringtone. Seriously, call me. We'll talk about this rockin' trio and their snappy tunes and their wild videos. What, you don't have my number? Guess you better keep reading ... So many good shows tonight — in the interest of self-promotion, we'll start with our own: ► Buzz Bands LA's SecondTuesday , our monthly songwriter night, brings Correatown , Imperial Mammoth , College Kids and Will Courtney to Lot 1 Cafe in Echo Park for a night of acoustic or semi-acoustic sets. The music starts at 9:15. ► Rock quartet Dead Sara (pictured), newly signed to Universal imprint Pocket Kid Records and with a debut album coming in May, headline the Troubadour, suported by Little Hurricane, Last in [...]
"Paint a Rocket" is the new song from Pisces , the experimental folk-pop explorations of Happy Hollows frontwoman Sarah Negahdari. A shredder in her indie-rock trio, Negahdari takes on a whole new persona as Pisces. Both in her initial video "Voodoo" [ see our post from October ] and in "Paint a Rocket," Pisces takes a spacious, dreamy approach to folk — suggesting '60s greats Sandy Denny and Annie Haslam, though not quite in that vocal pantheon. The new song's choral-bordering-on-baroque backdrop bears of the fingerprints of Dios' Joel Morales, who produced the EP that is coming out in [...]
Saturday night is all right for ... incredible small shows: ► Tour De France , the L.A.-based songwriting duo of Bernadette Colomine and Samuel H Collin, celebrate the release of a new album with a show at the Bootleg Theater that promises guest turns by Rufus and Martha Wainwright. London-based Still Corners , witha new reord just out on Sub Pop, opens. ► Fruit Bats , their fifth full-length "Tripper" just out in August, headlines the Troubadour, with L.A. faves the Parson Red Heads supporting. That's their video for "You're Too Weird," [...]

Before I get all giddy about tonight's LA Buzz Bands show on KCSN (88.5 FM) — and I am giddy — some thank-yous are in order. First, thanks to everybody who contributed to KCSN's "Pump the Power" pledge drive ( you can still donate here ). And second, tip of the cap to Mark Sovel, aka Mr. Shovel , who filled for me last week while I was vacationing ( you can stream his show here ). Now, about tonight: There was quite a rush of new music that came my [...]

Those who've witnessed Sarah Negahdari perform outside her role as frontwoman / pixie shredder of the L.A. indie-rock trio the Happy Hollows know that her imagination can run wild, and rope listeners into accompanying her to a far-off place. "Negahdariland," it's been called, and it seems to be the birthplace of her solo work, which she's undertaking as Pisces. The music falls more in the experimental pop vein, and the video for her first single "Voodoo," starring Negahdari and Heather Pollock and filmed by her Hollows bandmate Charlie Mahoney, purrs with intrigue. A Pisces EP is on the [...]

I'm not sure whether it's the fact that I'm going on holiday soon, or the sunshine vibes showcased on this remix of 'Rich Blood', but I really want to put on some shorts and drink some beer. It could also have a lot to do with the names of the artists involved, but it's making me happy, and that's the main thing. Think Washed Out with female vocals and very slight funk element, and you have the Tropic of Pisces remix of 'Rich Blood' by Spanish Prisoners . Enjoy. You [...]
Tweetvaso link Shortly after we highlighted Spanish Prisoners' and their single "Rich Blood," the band released news of a remix of the track and made it available for download on a Bandcamp page already replete with goodies. For a remix with altered and slightly jazzed up electro accompaniments, the strength remains the vocals. With a...

Monday, December 14, 2009 Well hot damn, again again again, that always looming end of year has crashed down upon me, and as always I'm ill-prepared and forgetful. Let me be honest for a second, the end of the year seems to take me by surprise every year, and every year I look back on the albums I've listened to, and most often can't remember which ones stood out whatsoever. Instead I see a blur of music, an imaginary stack of albums that could be from 2009 or could be from 1909. [...]

In no particular order. Old stuff today, new stuff later. Amadou & Mariam - The Magic Couple [Wrasse] Best-Of compilation culled from Amadou & Mariam's 1997-2001 material, in which the divinely gifted Malian blind couple honed the style seen on sacred earth-opus, Welcome to Mali . Coldplay-endorsed, NPR-approved, and the darling of every critic cognizant of the word, "polyrhythm." For good reason. MP3: [...]

Pisces - Dear One Another overlooked classic, this one from 1969 (although never released until 2009). Perhaps it was too slow to be considered psychedelic pop at the time, but its resemblance to the Os Mutantes classic Minha Menina (1968) has me wondering if Tropicalia could have reached all the way to Illinois within the space of a year. A Lovely Sight is out now on via Numero Group - Buy Photo by Angus 柒 , [...]
Pisces "Dear One" Posted: 03 Jun 2009 11:54 PM PDT It's no secret we like re-releases, so when Numero Group sent me their latest from Illinois psych rockers Pisces, I immediately popped it in, and per usual it is an amazing gem. Nifty cover! I wonder if its the original? Pisces - Dear One
I am in full Numero Group jocking mode right now. I am eating, breathing, sleeping, excrementing, hand-clapping, foot-stomping, jitterbugging my way through just about every Numero Group release I can get my hands on. I'm usually one to stick to the label's immaculate compilations of obscure, but Gorilla vs. Bear turned me on to this [...]

pisces | a lovely sight The inimitable Numero Group -- best known for their consistently mindblowing Eccentric Soul compilations -- offers up a change of pace in the form of yet another seemingly out of thin air "How the hell had no one found this before now?" gem. In this case, though, it's some lost fuzzy late-'60s psychedelic pop/folk from Rockford, Illinois' Pisces , and their unreleased/virtually unheard 1969 LP A Lovely Sight . From [...]
'You have a vivid imagination and often think you are being followed by the CIA or FBI. You have a minor influence over your associates and people resent you for your flaunting of your power. You lack confidence and are generally a coward. Pisces people do terrible things to small animals.' -Select Magazine, 1978
