If there is one band that always manages to surprise the hell out of me, it's Fucked Up. I remember listening to their demo and Epic in Minutes back when it came out and thinking they were pretty solid hardcore band, but not the messiahs of hardcore many were touting them to be. Now ten years later they release "David Comes To Life" and not only are the 'too cool for school' writers at Pitchfork collectively jizzing their pants over it, it's listed as #83 of Billboard's Top 200 of 2011... by BBG Pissed Jeans at House of Vans ( more by Chris La Putt ) Pissed Jeans , who haven't been very busy lately due to having kids , scheduled some shows this month including one in Brooklyn at Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (1/22), joined by Protect-U and Pop.1280 . The show was another one-off for the punk band, but one of a few dates for Pop.1280 , who are welcoming their [...]

While patrons were being served nachos and beers downstairs at Sneaky Dee's on Friday night, upstairs fans were served something a little different: a night of high-energy, eardrum-busting punk rock. Pissed Jeans headlined a three-band gig, which also showcased local outfits, Anagram and TV Freaks (who were also releasing their latest LP). As far as the opening acts went, TV Freaks really shone. The lead singer pulled some crazy Iggy Pop/Sid Viscous shit during their show. On separate occasions he spat into the crowd, beat himself over the head [...]

by BBG Pop 1280 mine the dark chasms of punk and no-wave on their new LP The Horror , due on Sacred Bones on January 24th. The band previously released the song "Bodies In The Dunes" from that album, and we are now proud to premiere another track today called "New Electronic". Stream both below. Pop 1280 have THREE NYC shows scheduled for the next couple of months. Most imminently, the [...]

Live music picks for THURSDAY JANUARY 19 through TUESDAY JANUARY 23, 2012. THURSDAY JANUARY 19 / DADA LIFE / THE HOXTON / 69 BATHURST / $20 / 19+ This one's for the electro-house crowd. Dada Life , the duo from Sweden, have been in the game since 2006, but they didn't reach true prominence until 2010, when they made it onto DJ Magazine's Top 100 list. Since then, their popularity has skyrocketed. When it comes to electronic music, I'm definitely more of a drum & bass man myself, but [...]

Philadelphia by way of Allentown noise assassins Pissed Jeans are bringing their brand of heavy/hardcore punk in the vein of SST record's 80's roster to Johnny Brenda's tonight, alongside local badass avant-garde duo Blues Control , who recently collaborated with zitherist/composer Laraaji for a mind-bending installment of RVNG Intl.'s FRKWYS series. Pissed Jeans latest release 2009's King of Jeans , a diss to the wave of similarly named and sounding bands that has sprung up from the underground in the wake of the group's breakthrough album, Hope for Men (cough White Denim cough [...]

FRIDAY, JANUARY 13th With a Google-proof band name and zero social-networking presence, Cults used to be such a mystery. Then the unassuming New York duo posted a few tracks online in 2010, which immediately set off a hunt for the truth about their backgrounds and catapulted them into the indie spotlight. The single "Go Outside" channels '60s girl-group pop; it's a sunny song with Lesley Gore-esque vocals, glockenspiel, and an eerie undercurrent (courtesy of samples of cult leader Jim Jones muttering about death). Though they're not in any rush to make every autobiographical detail and quirk public, [...]

by BBG Though appeared at House of Vans over the summer , Pissed Jeans have kept a relatively low profile in 2011. They played very shows and three were in Philadelphia. The new year is just around the corner though, and Pissed Jeans have already announced a pair of dates, both East Coast. Look for the band to play January 14th at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia and Brooklyn's Music Hall of [...]

Shervin Lainez You know how the internet basically shuts down when the US goes on holiday? Well it does, and that's why today's post is a bit slight to say the least. And we'll kick it off with a couple of sessions to listen to, watch and download from The Antlers to mark the release this week of their (together) EP. It's a companion to this year's Burst Apart long-player, which contains the remixes and covers that are standard for these sorts of releases [...]

Slothbear Cantor On Album Review ALBUM REVIEW: A Slothbear is what do you get when you mix some mammals and paint in Staten Island which forms the release they call Cantor On . Some may write this part of New York off as just a breeding ground for lap dance vixens but we won't be so narrow minded. We thought we heard something deeper when we featured them in our Crop-O-Singles over the summer and here we are proven right. They do have more moves than a Go-Go dancer! This [...]
So here we go with some Saturday craziness. Get your drinkin' shoes on for what is sure to be a wylin' out style throwdown kicked out the jams style b-day bash at the Golden West Cafe.... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

Well, we're just about halfway with the reposts... Today, we feature volumes 9 and 10, which were originally posted in August 2009. Volume 10 holds a special place in this blog's history, because that's when Aaron from Tsururadio offered to post the mix on his blog. That started a bit of following and it has grown ever since. Aaron's moved onto Tsuruphoto, following his passion for photography. He now has a nudie-zine featuring some edgy but tasteful art, several videos to promote the zine and Tsuruphoto, and the occasional mixtape. We owe a big thanks for his early support, and [...]
Van's House Party with Pissed Jeans, Screaming Females, Fucked Up, & Cro Mags left us with bruises that were extremely, outrageously, probably-shouldn't-go-into-wor k-with-this-kind-of-wound EPIC.

photos by Chris La Putt & Harriet Roberts & Andrew St. Clair , words by BBG Cro-Mags headlined a hot, sweaty, and rain-drenched House of Vans with a supporting cast of Fucked Up , Screaming Females , and Pissed Jeans on Friday night (7/29). Doors to the venue opened at 7PM as the masses in line (the line touched the neighboring They Might [...]

A year ago, this site published my review of Rohnert Park, the then-new album from San Francisco based hardcore act Ceremony. I cited the similarities of that record with those of comparatively more popular acts Fucked Up and Pissed Jeans, two groups that record for "indie" labels that are distinct from those owned by the [...]
