Let me be the first to wish all of our readers a very merry Thanksgiving holiday. While you're stuffing your gullet with turkey and dressing, we'll be here all holiday long providing you with the latest Chicago music news and reviews. Also, beginning in December, we'll start our best of the decade/best of the 2009 lists. So that'll be fun. This weekend, we're spotlighting tonight's Pixies' show, Peaches and Permanent Records Third Anniversary Bash at The Hideout. But before we get to our picks for top weekend shows, a reminder: [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News With smoke machines billowing, the silent film ' Un Chien Andalou ' showing on a massive video screen and ominous music playing, the four members of the Pixies -- Black Francis , Kim Deal , Joey Santiago and David Lovering -- walked onstage at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on Thursday night, the first of their three-day stint in the city on the 'Doolittle' 20th anniversary tour. Warming up with several 'Doolittle'-era b-sides, the crowd was feeling it right [...]
The Pixies opened their Los Angeles shows this month by playing Louis Bunuel's 1929 surrealist film Un Chien Andalou . The movie inspired Debaser , the opening song on the classic Doolittle (played in its entirety for three shows at the Aragon starting Thursday). Check out this mash-up of Un Chien Andalou and Debaser . Manta Ray - Pixies [...]
As if you needed three reasons to see Pixies at the Aragon tonight: 1. Pixies will be honoring the 20th anniversary of their classic 1989 record Doolittle by performing the record in its entirety plus b-sides like "Bailey's Walk" and "Into the White." 2. There's a good chance you'll hear cuts from other Pixies' records, such as "Something Against You," "Nimrod's Son" and "Where is my Mind," which appeared during the Pixies' second encore at the Fillmore Auditorium [...]

MP3 : Jay Reatard - It Ain't Gonna Save Me MP3 : The Black Hollies - Gloomy Monday Morning MP3 : Bryan Scary and the ShreddingTears - (It's A) Gambler's Whirl Pels ikke bjørnen før den er skudt. Or, don't skin the bear before it's been shot. That seems to be exactly what Jay Reatard 's old band members tried to do when they walked out on him in October. (But then again, that's punk music, right?) Inconvenient timing (due to them being on [...]
When Pixies played four nights at the Aragon during the first reunion tour in 2004, the band played a number of " Doolittle " songs (of course). Knowing how bad these reunion shows can be, I was blown away by how good the band sounded after all the years. Pixies bring the "Doolittle" tour to Aragon Thursday for a three-night stand. The band performs its 1989 masterpiece in its entirety and throws in some outtakes to fill out the show. The tour opened in Los Angeles this month and hits [...]

I've never met an album that didn't change for me somehow. Now, they can go up and down the scale in either a positive or negative direction, but there isn't one that escapes a reframing of sorts somewhere along the line. For some albums, time is the perfect vindicator. The album is revealed as a master stroke and the audiences' initial conceptions are what become tarnished. Other times, what was once golden falls into disrepair, looking like an old sack of potatoes, stripped of its luster and banished to the bin. This state of flux is part of what makes [...]

There was one thing, outside of the actual music, that my mind kept returning to during the Pixies concert on Friday night at the Paramount . I couldn't stop thinking about how each band member might view this new '20th Anniversary of Doolittle ' reunion. Are they genuinely excited about it? Or are they in it just for the money? Are they surprised by their current popularity, or did they expect it? Do they think it's silly, all this fuss over an enigmatic punk band that broke up 16 years ago? Or do they feel validated, or [...]

First, here's some free new music that you can collect on your own, if you have an e-mail address, and you happen to like free live EPs by a little-known band called the Pixies. This is fresh from their reunion tour where they're re-creating Doolittle live on stage. The American leg starts later this week. Download The Pixies - "Gouge Away (live)".mp3 [...]

Plenty happened to the world in 1989 - there's your 20 years, mathematicians - from the celebratory fall of the Berlin Wall to the tragic massacre in Tiananmen Square and huge earthquake in San Francisco. With my vague recollection of the general time period as opposed to the specific events, it's always interesting to dig back and see how history remembers the details. OFFICIAL SITE [...]

Last week , we announced Bernard Sumner's new group, Bad Lieutenant , was set to play four U.S. dates this week, two as headliners, two as openers for The Pixies in NYC and Chicago. Word came down today that they've had to cancel due to visa problems. It is with frustration and regret that Bad Lieutenant reluctantly announces the cancellation of the band's four U.S. dates set to commence next week. The more stringent immigration laws and changing visa parameters resulted in an inability to process the necessary paperwork. "We were all so [...]

The Pixies are recording all the stops on their U.S. tour. Relive the experience!
[mp3] Pixies / Wave of mutilation [Direktlink] Pixies live in Brüssel
Eventually discharged from the Air Force for being uncooperative and "evidencing a dislike for the service" , Marvin Gaye went so far as to fake mental illness in his efforts to escape the mid-century war machine he'd so gracefully speak out against with his first post- Tammi Terrell output in 1971 . Jokes to be made about the Gaye family and mental illness aside, it's a telling rebellion from artist in restless youth, one that first came to mind upon hearing the song featured in today's post. "Get It On In My Mind" is an [...]

And for those attending [...]

No has ever suggested that there was any amount of moss gathering around the Pixies . For starters, they knew the time was right to leap into the reunion/full-album-performance fray - they've finished playing their classic Doolittle album from start to finish for ecstatic European audiences, and are just getting underway with the American leg of the tour. But now it turns out those wily alt-rock icons have got even more tricks up their sleeves. Starting on November 23rd, the band's first night in New York City, you'll be able to buy a recording of each night's [...]
