Destroyer – Kaputt Dan Bejar’s strangely amelodic & lackadaisical cryptic poetry delivered over austere rhythms and bizarre arrangements is the trademark of Destroyer . Kaputt continues this tradition while standing out from the band’s other albums. This record is immersive and wonderfully bleak & wistful, with an anachronistic mellow 70s AM-radio feel to it. The melodies are carried by saxophone, trumpet, and flute. Synthesizers provide copious atmosphere and fills, with guitars providing mostly background rhythm. The lyrical content is diverse and [...]
Drake's Top Albums of 2011 Words : Drake Lelane If 2010 was 1993 all over again, 2011 seemed to ignore this trend (and all the corresponding 20 year anniversary reissues), instead reaching back a decade prior. Releases from Destroyer and M83 mined that decade to make great albums, while several bands of that era (Gang of Four, Wire, The Feelies) returned with new releases. Another minor trend we noticed here was artists absolutely obliterating the tired "sophomore slump" myth, with Girls, tUnE-yArds, Bon Iver, Real Estate, Fleet [...]

2011 zit er bijna op. Het is dus de hoogste tijd om de score van het muziekjaar 2011 op te maken. Wat zijn de albums die ons het afgelopen jaar kippenvel bezorgden? Seeing how our staff has distinct tastes and opinions on music, it would be nearly impossible for us to determine a 10 Albums of 2010 list as a single entity without excessive bloodshed. So over the next couple of days, we’ll be posting Top 10 Albums of 2011 lists as determined by individual Loud Loop Press staff members. Today, contributor Britni Day body slams us with her list for Top 10 Albums of 2011. This year, I felt like I was inundated with a lot of crap on the radio. If I wasn’t learning Jagger’s moves [...]
This year in music has been quite impressive. While 2010 gave us clear-cut, stand alone winners, it was much harder to determine which album was Top Ten worthy, let alone the best of 2011. Most sites have published their lists already, and while many albums appear on the same lists, the top ten varies greatly from list to list. Don't expect us to be any different. Foster The People - Torches [...]
Album #1: Let England Shake by PJ Harvey I've been a PJ Harvey fan for a long time and have loved nearly everything she's done. But if you had told me in January that her record would be my favourite album in a year when Radiohead released a record, there's no way I would have believed you or your hitler hairdo. But Let England Shake is such a brilliant record that it kind of forced its way here. In a year when some have argued there were no [...]
Album #2: The King Of Limbs by Radiohead The King Of Limbs is not my favourite album of the year, apparently. I go back and forth. But I must admit to experiencing an existential crisis of sorts with placing TKOL at #2. While it is certainly a "minor" Radiohead album (short, little publicity, no tour, no commercial single, etc), I still find myself listening to TKOL a lot. It's got a unique mood and feel and features some really great songs including the album's bookends - [...]
![[Best of 2011] Reader Poll Results](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3947665_lg.jpg)
Tweet vaso link Not unlike all of our lists, the entrants for our Reader Poll were all over the place. There were 28 different albums that received multiple votes, and 114 different albums were nominated overall. We’re only listing the ones with multiple votes, and there were 11 that received more than 2 votes. Surprisingly, the album that received the most votes in the Reader Poll didn’t receive any votes on any of our writers lists, which shows the volatility [...]

Tweet vaso link Boiling down a year’s worth of music into a manageable 10-entry list is a bit daunting, but when the powers that be at Tympanogram gave the order, I obliged. The problem, of course, is that I am riddled with insecurities. I haven’t been able to listen to everything I’ve wanted to the extent that I would have liked. Maybe the records I gravitated to just don't cut the mustard. Maybe my preferences for marginal styles diminishes my [...]

Two thousand and eleven has been an odd year for me, and I think for music as well. Between acclimating to a completely different environment and being fully immersed in the music world, I foresaw a serious evolution and transformation of my music tastes prior to compiling my "Best of" lists. After the completion of said lists, it seems that not much has actually changed - not only in the last year, but the last five, when observing which names were included. To be honest, it was quite difficult to decide on 10 full albums I really [...]

We've spent the last two days unveiling numbers 50-11 in our top 50 songs of 2011, and now the time has come to unveil what Muso's Guide's hefty panel of writers nominated as their top 10 songs released this year. It's been a pretty diverse selection thus far, and the top end of the chart is no different. 10. Wild Beasts - Reach a Bit Further 9. Ghostpoet - Cash and Carry Me Home 8. PJ Harvey [...]

It's been fun, but now it's time to wrap up the Gummy Awards with the big final list: your picks for the year's top 10 albums! And the final result is: You guys more or less agree with us! Every album in your top 10 appeared in our top 50, most of them near the top. Your #1 was our #3, and our #1 was your #3. You guys don't like rap or mutant R&B as much as we do, and you boosted St. Vincent and James Blake and Destroyer and tUnE-yArDs way up the list. Still, we [...]
Last week we stereotyped you by your favorite books , and this week it's time to apply a bumper edition of our gratuitous generalizations to the world of music. Our stereotyping posts have become something of a tradition at Flavorpill, but still, here's our obligatory disclaimer: this is an entirely tongue-in-cheek exercise, so don't get all offended — and also, as ever, several of our favorite records are on here, and we'll totally own up to all the stereotypes that apply to us. Anyway, with that said, here are 50 albums that keep cropping up on end-of-year lists and [...]

2011 was a real chicken-and-egg kind of year in music. Was there really less amazing music or did everything sound a little duller because it was a difficult year for me personally? Was there less sonically interesting music in 2011 or was it because I cut way back on listening to music with headphones? Was there less originality or is it because we're so bombarded with music all the time that it just takes so much more to cut through the sheer volume? While it may have been for personal reasons, it did seem as though 2011 was [...]
