Who doesn't love PJ Harvey? We've been big fans of this legendary singer since 19952s To Bring You My Love . Check out "The Words That Maketh Murder" from PJ Harvey's latest album Let England Shake . Frank Yang Someday, I don't know when, but someday, Laura Marling will come to Toronto and play an appropriately-sized venue at a decent point in an album's promotional cycle. She was already a Mercury Prize shortlister for her debut album Alas I Cannot Swim when she made her local debut at the barely 200-capacity Rivoli in October 2008 , and her return engagement in February 2009 was originally booked into the barely-bigger Drake Underground before being sensibly moved to the 500-person Lee's Palace where it still [...]
David Fendick and Jonny Hooker are two multi-instrumentalists from Leeds, UK. Together they are Fossil Collective, an alternative-folk band influenced by artists like Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Young, and Fleetwood Mac. It's easy to dismiss the band's sound as standard indie-folk with your parents' favorite groups as their influences. However, on closer inspection, you can [...]

In April of this year, PJ Harvey graced the East West Studios in Hollywood to do an exclusive interview and session for iTunes. What came out of that is a revealing look at a songwriter at the top of her game. Let England Shake , Harvey's latest, is a critically acclaimed album which has recently won the Mercury Prize . This places Harvey in the unique position of being not only the first woman to win the prize when she won it in 2000 for Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea [...]

Following a stunning Electric Picnic performance earlier this month, and in the wake of being awarded the 2011 Mercury Prize for Album of the Year for Let England Shake , her eight studio album, PJ Harvey has unveiled two brand new tracks, 'The Last Living Rose' and 'The Words That Maketh Murder'. Both taken from her acclaimed 2011 release, these two new offerings further prove why Let England Shake is the fastest selling record of Harvey's already impressive career. [...]

Saturday dawns in aptly spectacular fashion, as a trail of bloodshot eyes tumble towards the heart of a hammock-infested forest to bask in the mangled, mashed, and finely ground anecdotes of Howard Marks . Billed to unleash a dubstep DJ set, it transpires he's frequenting his seventh of the eight Bestival editions thus far to talk shit. Quite literally, as he opts to inform the congregated cross-legged multitude of the many reasons for which "turds" can be considered the currency of infantility, his target audience earlier on in the summer when he put his own marijuana-perfumed slant on [...]
Fennerpearson offers a thoughtful post about about mixing pop and politics : Chris's view was that the pop song – and, to cut a long argument short, [the PJ Harvey album] *is* a pop album – was not the right vehicle to discuss war. Although Chris is a headmaster now, he was once an English teacher, so – impressed by my own improvisation – I riposted with the world war one poets. It transpires, however, that they *agonised* over whether it was appropriate to record the horrors of war in a contrived form. [...]

The new Justice album is not what you are expecting. It certainly wasn't what we were expecting after the unquestionable pop brilliance of singles 'Civilization' and 'Audio Video Disco'. What the new Justice album is, is 40 minutes of spellbinding electronic pop music and without question one of the most captivating and enjoyable albums of 2011. It doesn't really have any hit singles on it, but that's really not what 'Audio Video Disco' is all about. Like PJ Harvey winning the Mercury Music Prize for her album celebrating the album [...]
The HBO hit drama True Blood delivers another great soundtrack.

Congratulations to Polly Jean Harvey for winning the Mercury Prize for the second time, the only artist to do so. Harvey won for her album Let England Shake, a wonderfully conceived and elegantly controlled tribute to a nation and its armed forces. 10 years after her first win and deeply affected by the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, Harvey has created a deeply involved album that burns slowly but lacks cohesive and direct execution. It dances around delicately, almost lacklustre in its approach and delivery, with hard-hitting graphic lyrics intertwined with softened distanced vocals and music. [...]
