Over the weekend Nico Giarrano, the artist behind the dreamy bedroom pop of Places , released a new record called The Future , which at first listen sounds like anything but. Steeped in the gauzy haze of billowing synths, scattered percussion and vocals blown-out to the point of obscurity, the 11-song record swims through the rippled currents of an impressionistic '80s reverie that's warm and beguiling. It's a murky, nostalgia-laden effort to be sure, but it remains (at least at first glance) exceedingly thoughtful and surprisingly versatile. It's still to early in my listening [...]
