I posted Professor Penguin 's single back in December , the single 'Pilot' was great and now they're got there album! Released yesterday it's filled with lots of indie-electronic and I can't get enough of it. You can stream the full album on Soundcloud and buy it here. Professor Penguin - Power Plants Professor Penguin - Planes 2 Professor Penguin - Pirate
Professor Penguin are the newest band out of London that I have my eye on. They have just announced that they will release their debut album 'Planes' on April 9th and you can check out the 'Pirate' single/video below. Their sound is a nice resemblance to when I first heard Keane, gives me the same type of feeling, as it is more of a lower key sound that is heavy on getting the vocals and lyrics to stand out. When listening to Professor Penguin's songs such as 'Pilot' and 'Pirate' you can see the talent the band has and [...]
Last year we had a wonderful new London-based nine-piece called Professor Penguin play a hell of a set for us. Now those Penguins are about to release their debut album 'Planes' on April 9th, and their new single 'Pirate' is also out today for free from www.professorpenguin.com They've been picking up loads of great support from BBC Radio 1, 6Music, XFM and The Fly, and come with a hefty 'stamp of approval' from us. Here's their new video for 'Pirate' that gives a [...]
If London-based six-to-eleven-piece Professor Penguin 's sole aim is to woo all listeners into a calming state of bliss, they've achieved that and more on the three-minute-long slice of indie-folk-tronica heaven that is their debut single "Pilot". "This is your first call and the start of your life/ As you reach into the clouds/ As you take off in flight," sings Jonny Abraham, and while we have no idea what he's going on about (Childbirth? A parent sending their teen off to college? Something to do with Amelia Earhart?), what we are pretty sure of is [...]
Looking at the tattoo-covered Steve Forrest, you'd probably guess that he's in some heavy rock band, and you'd kind of be right. But the former Evaline drummer/current Placebo drummer is now attempting to fly solo, taking on lead vocals for his new side project Planes - and it sounds absolutely like nothing he's ever done before. In the build-up to their EP launch, the band have been gradually showcasing some of their new material at small gigs around the UK. A few months back, they played their very first show [...]
There are tons of music blogs around the Internet these days, and it is hard to really find a solid audience. I know first hand as I created one at a time where tons of music blogs already existed. Yet, one blog that was an inspiration for my decision to create one has found a huge following. Many of you may check out Pigeons & Planes , and if you don't you probably should. Although the site has a big focus on hip hop and indie, it's the writing and passion that makes you feel like you are having [...]
Hail! The Planes arrive on ANBAD with an almost pitch-perfect set-up: not only were they recommended by a previous (and very good indeed) band, Trwbador , but they also have a great! big! exclamation! mark! in the middle of their band name. Regular readers will know that the latter, in particular, really does count for something. All hail! , then, a band who have made a folk song which transcends its six-minute limitations and unfolds - it really does seem to unfold - into a broad, chiffon-thin, kaleidoscopic swirl [...]
Walking. Well it depends a lot on where you're going and why. If I am marching swiftly and purposefully to a meeting, then Bam!, fuck it, the phones go in and something goes on. Something work-related though, and probably something I have been intending to review for a while, but not got round to listening to yet. If I'm off out to a gig, on the other hand, then it'll probably be something pretty raucous, to get me in the mood - something gravelly, angry and guitary. Not necessarily something [...]

Image from http://www.myspace.com/therose buds Indie-rock duo The Rosebuds' recent release of their fifth album, Loud Planes Fly Low , came not long after members Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp decided to put an end to their six-year marriage. Despite having spent the bulk of their music-making career as husband and wife, the end of their marriage did not signify the end of their partnership in songwriting. In the most recent issue of Under the Radar, Howard and Crisp, both multi-instrumentalists, discuss the uncharacteristically personal nature of the lyrical content in their latest musical endeavor. Both [...]
It's been a little while since we shared a new mix , and with the brisk weather snapping us out of our summer oblivion, it seems about time. For The Danger , P&P teamed up with The Masked Gorilla and Please Don't Stare for a diverse collection of tracks running from hip-hop to rock to pop, all mixed by PDS' DJ Ben-Ha-Meen. No theme. No restrictions. The Danger. Have a nice fall. Hit the jump for the back cover and [...]
Grids/Units/Planes is Andrew Foley of Brisbane, Australia. His slick, unique production style forges a brilliant mix of IDM and electronic shoegaze. Only five tracks deep, this album visits a multitude of textures. The title track combines elements of M83 and Album Leaf with spoken word, plucked synths, building to a brilliant wall of sound. "Kaleidoscopes and Cathedrals" has a music box quality and the feel of some later Boards of Canada material. "Like Sparks" goes from darkness to blazing fire as a giant wash of shoegaze overpowers quaint IDM tinkerings. "Lights in Mist" has a beat that DoF would be [...]

Mayhem's Euronymous to get immortalised on the tail of a Norwegian airliner?
Oh internet. Sometimes you get up to some japes, don't you? Norwegian Airlines are running a ballot where the public can vote on which famous Norwegian they'd like to see painted on the tail fin of one of the airline's jumbo jets . And the internet, collectively possessing what is in effect the psyche of 14 year-old boy, has managed to get the murdered former Mayhem gutiarist, Øystein Aarseth (aka Euronymous) into the number two spot in the poll. Although it's unlikely that Aarseth will win the poll , [...]

Professor Penguin – 'Pirate'
After being introduced here in November, Professor Penguin return with a new track under their arms. Anyone disappointed with the Maccabees' move to a bigger sound should enjoy 'Pirate'. Clocking in at under three minutes, it's a slow-building track which escalates to an epic crescendo. It's a gentle track that [Read more]

RADAR: Professor Penguin
London indie (sm)art/pop upstarts Professor Penguin have had their new charmingly askew single (and free download ) "Pilot" described by none other than Brian Eno as "such a beautiful piece" and, upon listening, who could disagree? What began as the vehicle for singer and songwriter Jonny Abraham has been expanded into a sophisticated outfit (complete with colorful horn shadings) that wanders confidently through odd jazz timings, squiggly-to-droning electronics, jangly melodies akimbo and Abraham's distinctive, matter-of-fact vocal style. We can't help but think of Charlie Fink's Noah and the Whale (yes, a good thing) [...]
