Quick...immediate names that spring to mind when the mention of Canadian musical acts come up in conversation? If you are imagining Celine Dion, Nickelback, Bryan Adams, KD Lang, Barenaked Ladies, Hedley, Wide Mouth Mason, Three Days Grace, Theory of a Deadman, Swollen Members, Sum 41, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne or Alanis Morissette...shame on you. Although these bands and (questionable) musicians helped to shape the landscape of the Canadian Music Scene, they do little convey how talented our country truly is. I meant to put this post together after Arcade Fire pulled off their Grammy victory for [...]

Living in the capital of Canada, (Ottawa, Ontario), the last thing you start to expect from your city is to be rich in the arts. I mean, with parliament a stone's throw away from any part in the city, Ottawa is more about politics than it is about the arts. This summer is different, though. Every July, the city puts on a 10 day music festival called Ottawa Bluesfest in which they bring many different musicians (not all blues, last years before they brought Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fergie, Wyclef Jean and Kanye West). Although there are usually [...]

The rain finally poured down on the fourth day (July 9th) of Ottawa Bluesfest. At least it wasn't as bad from the past three days where it was stinking hot. The weather made it cooler and easiser to enjoy the music. There was a interesting lineup on the Friday night. The acts that I saw were: The Soirée The Planet Smashers John Butler Trio Gord Downie and the Country of Miracles [...]
Photo By: shahram sharifWow, what's been going on in Iran is completely insane since the elections. If you just so happen to be living under a rock for the past week or so here's a summary: People voted, election seems rigged, people are fucking pissed and are taking to the streets. All I have to say, is that I'm proud of our Iranian brothers and sisters for standing up against injustice in

My St. Patrick's weekend started on Thursday night right after my Music and Popular Culture midterm... Thursday Night - Railed coupla lines. Dropped a hit of acid. Went wandering around in my school's arboretum. Drug Ballad by Eminem - Acid kicks in two hours later and made me realize my heart was beating really fast. Freaked out and thought I was gonna die from a heart attack. 300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues by The White Stripes Friday Night - [...]

I popped these guys in my CD player for the first time in a while (and let me tell you, it's difficult to fit an entire band in your CD player), and I forgot how fun The Planet Smashers are. These canadians are the definition of a party ska band. They sing songs about things such as liking your girlfriend (no, not their girlfriends... YOURS), and Super Orgy Porno Parties. If you like Mustard Plug, you need to check these guys out. I've seen them on a number of occassions, and they play the same exact [...]
