Rarely will a band come around that encapsulates the full spectrum of what we try to do here at Hidden Track. As purveyors of improvisational music, indie rock, Americana and general open-mindedness, there's a very short list of bands who embrace those same interests in one fell swoop. However, Montreal-based Plants and Animals are one of those rare anomalies. [Photo by Caroline Desilets] Taking their latest standout album, The End of That , as case in point, Plants and Animals take sharp sonic turns from track to track, [...]

This past week, Plants and Animals released a single for their upcoming album, The End of That , out on February 28th. One thing that makes me become obsessed with this band time and time again is the wide variety of songs they have. Throughout both of their albums La La Land and Parc Avenue , there is just such a variety in content. They can create such intensity through the most delicate melodies like in their song "Game Shows" or they can bring a spirit of rock revival like on "Jeans [...]

Some of you may have heard 20102s touching and true classic rock revivalist album La La Land from the brilliant Montreal act Plants and Animals . For those of you that haven't, it's about time you hop on the band-wagon. In addition to their fantastic live shows, the band has this uncanny ability to craft songs that roar and rock while still emoting the feelings of joy, loneliness, and personal freedom. The End of That , which comes out February 28, 2012 comes the closest to bridging the gap between the disorder, rock adventure, primal infusion [...]
I'm really good at having weird dreams as of late. To recap my last week of very vivid dreams: they were all about surviving post-apocalyptic times (in my childhood neighborhood, in Mexico, and on an undisclosed mountainside in Austria) and I still can't seem to shake the realness and very strange nature of them all. Luckily there is slightly off kilter music out there that probably would have done a good job soundtracking these dreams. Like this new Miike Snow track called Black Tin Box (it's so new I can't even embed it yet). Or this amazing track [...]

Sticking with the new theme around here...this is a playlist with choice songs from a mixed cd I just put in my mom's PT Cruiser. It's pretty fast. 1. Yellow Ostrich - Marathon Runner 2. Plants & Animals - Lightshow 3. Brian TV - Something About Love 4. ALLAH-LAHS - Catamaran [...]

Words // Scott Pingeton Sometimes you hear a song that you instantly know will just melt faces and get the jaded hipsters moving at a live show. "Lightshow", the first single off Plants and Animals' upcoming album The End of That , is one of those songs. The song layers both acoustic and electric guitars, cacophonous percussion, lyrics that beg to be shouted back at the stage and some loud/quiet dynamics. It may be anthem-by-numbers, but by the time the guitar solo and "oh oh" refrain comes along, I defy you to [...]

There just isn't enough time in my days right now. Here's the new formula around here while I am finishing up my training at the restaurant...instead of trying to do a small posting here and there, my new goal will be to put out a playlist every week. Hopefully that works for you over the next few months until life settles down a bit. I was pretty excited about some of the live shows that have been announced in Vancouver over the next while. Here are some songs from must-see shows coming to town. Enjoy. [...]
Plants and Animals I’ll Believe In Anything (Wolf Parade Cover) + Lightshow mp3 This cover of Wolf Parade’s “I’ll Believe In Anything,” actually gives me chills…and I suck the souls of 21 yr old boys daily, so that’s really saying something. This cover is really fantastic and has such a wonderful introduction by the band. Fucking Canadians man, such darlings. Here’s the generic part about where this video came from that clearly I didn’t write: The live cover comes from the [...]

Photograph by Jason Halstead Provincial is John K. Samson’s first full-length solo album. Collecting re-recorded versions of songs from his previously released EPs City Route 85 and Provincial Road 222 , along with a few extras, the Weakerthans’ frontman finds himself able to explore a bit musically and indulge in a bit of weirdness. Not that anything here would be particularly out of place on a Weakerthans album, but the subject matter is certainly more varied, and as a whole the album is more subdued. Most noticeable is [...]
