Spaghetti and meatballs, peanut butter and jelly, wine and cheese. There are things in this world that just go together and music and beer are one of those great pairings. There is a reason every bar has a jukebox in it, there is a reason that when you slap on a vinyl that you want to grab a six-pack, there is a reason that at concerts nearly every man and woman has a beer in their hand even though it costs 8 bucks. They just work. The beers and songs are paired together in a handful of ways. [...]

Late 2009 Plants and Animals toured around Europe, promoting their debut album 'Parc Avenue'. Their second to last stop on the tour was Trix in Antwerp. I was helping behind the bar so I'd arranged with Nicolas we'd have a internet chat when they would be back in their hometown of Montreal a couple of days later... Did you back home arrive well? Nicolas Basque : Yes, long flight, jet lag, no sleep, but it's nice [...]

Not too long ago, Plants and Animals was a trio with a tendency to pen left-of-center folk tunes. After witnessing Saturday night's performance at Lee's Palace , the band has quickly transformed themselves into a powerhouse rock trio, sounding little like their former folksy selves.
I would argue that Plants and Animals are one of Canada's best indie-rock bands. You can easily pop in one of their albums and let it run straight through without any qualms of disliking certain tracks. It's also quite obvious that their fans are appreciative of their work. On Friday night, the Commodore wasn't full [...]

Vote for your favorite this year! I got this idea from Earbuds and Ticketstubs . To all the nominees nominated for CBC Radio 3 ''s Searchlight Contest. What outrageous things are you willing to do to win this competition? Go on http://r3.ca/0CvO to vote for you favorite Canadian music website. For dream sake "if I win", I would hold a big show (depending on which Ottawa venue to use) on winning the contest and get whatever band is available to play. Outrageous part will be [...]

Vote for your favorites this year! I was not aware that my site was nominated in CBC Radio 3 's Searchlight Competition for Canada's Best Music Website. Today of all days being Chinese New Years (Year of the Rabbit) and now this. I don't know how my site was picked out since I read on the day it was announced that mostly people listed these sites: Herohill , Chromewaves , iheartmusic , QBiM , Earbuds and Ticketstubs , Exclaim , Southern Souls , [...]

Polyvinyl So I've had to check myself a couple times from taking a, " Shugo Tokumaro 's music is so weird and wonderful, it must be because he's Japanese!" angle on this writeup. Because even though it's not incorrect - Tokumaru IS Japanese and sings entirely in Japanese and many things that come out of Japan are weird and wonderful to Western sensibilities - it's too reductive and doesn't give Tokumaru enough credit for what he's done with his music. His latest album, Port Entropy is the second of [...]

2010 felt more fractured musically then even previous years. Beneath the non essential behemoth that is current day popular music there existed layers and stratas of many musical colours and styles. Sometimes it all felt a bit overwhelming and uncertain. There were new styles and movements. Some appealing, some not so. Basically for me I still searched for new ideas in old frameworks. I am a sucker for well structured songs with good melody, insightful lyrics and a load of heart and passion. If it involves something approaching electro pop or hip hop I will generally steer clear of it. [...]

After announcing plans for an indefinite hiatus following their sold-out show at Sound Academy in Toronto in late November, Wolf Parade fans like myself have been bewildered and dismayed. Much, if not all, of my musical obsessions over the past five years have come from the combination of Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug that formed Wolf Parade back in 2004, right around the time I started this blog. In fact, Spencer Krug is almost definitely the most blogged about name on this site in its history, and rightfully so. Not only have I been obsessed with Wolf Parade for [...]

The world needs Japandroids right now. These two young men from Vancouver take all of the fear and joy of twenty-something life, everything we stare down as we move from youth to real adulthood, take it and grapple with it, think about it, right about it, and express it through the one language we all speak, [...]

The winner of this race was a foregone conclusion from the moment back in February or March when I heard the first chords of the first song off Frog Eyes new album and despite an onslaught of wonderful music throughout the spring and summer of 2010, nothing could displace the power of "A Flower in a Glove." But this was a truly magical year for music, at least through September, when the string of excellent releases shrivelled up in the disappointment of the latest by Sufjan Stevens and Belle & Sebastian (and very few of the songs on [...]

Here is another installment of the best of 2010 Canadian albums. There is a mix of indie pop, rock, dance, folk and even jazz. This time its from #41-#50. Hope you will like who is in this list. Don't forget to check out their music. Plants and Animals - La La Land Plants and Animals is a band that will take some risk and experimentation on La La Land. [...]
Whether it's the melody or lyrics, the catchiness or repeatability, the party starter or the emotive heart tugger, a song has to make a connection with you. It has to stop your mind whirling and say -- rather, demand -- "Stop and listen!". Of the hundreds of tracks we posted (and hundreds more we listened to) this year, these were the ones we most connected with. The ones that made us stop and listen every time. A quick note on the rules we followed. Basically, like last year, nearly everything released in the year - whether from [...]

Photography by ME ! Well oh well oh well... here we are, once again. at the "end" of another exciting and fun and musically awesome year! What? You don't think this was a "good year for music"? You know what we always say about that right? If you ain't finding music your digging, you ain't digging deep enough. With the sheer (shear?) wealth of albums out there, from the label releases to the self-released albums on the bandcamps and blogs [...]
