I suppose I should probably conclude all this desert talk by mentioning the supreme being in Organ Pipe National Monument , the park's namesake, the organ pipe cactus ( Stenocereus thurberi ). The organ pipe is a species of cactus native to Mexico and the southwestern United States and is much rarer in the U.S., with the exception being, of course, Organ Pipes National Monument, where a major bulk of the American organ pipes live. The organ pipe has several narrow stems that grow up to the sky from a short trunk that peaks above [...]

Juniperus communis : Juniperus communis, the Common Juniper, is a species in the genus Juniperus, in the family Cupressaceae. It is a shrub or small tree, very variable and often a low spreading shrub, but occasionally reaching 10 m tall. Common Juniper has needle-like leaves in whorls of three; the leaves are green, with a single white stomatal band on the [...]

This robot is designed to raise plants in Mars. Yes, vegetation is going the get there before us. What's with the scary side-eye? For light? It can move around in downtown Mars. You know, in case Martians have a craving for arugula. Posted in Tech Techa Tagged: arugula, mars, more, plant, robot, rocca, rocket, vegetation
The evening of music at Berbati's Pan was amazing. Headliner Quintron & Miss Pussycat unleashed a heavy dose of "Swamp Tech" on the crowd, leaving them partying and sweating, being urged to take their shirts off. Their sound was awesome, coming largely from Quintron, the multitalented lead vocalist, organist and drum synthesizer player. The man invented a rotating–light activated analog synthesizer called the Drum Buddy, and he plays everything all at the same time as he sings. Impressed the hell out of me! Along with Quintron was Miss Pussycat, who opened with a killer puppet show, [...]

The Cardón cactus, scientific name Pachycereus pringlei , is the tallest cactus in the world with a maximum recorded height of almost 63 feet. This article says 70. Take that, Saguaro.

Along with the prickly pear, the Opuntia Echios (pictured above) is part of the Opunita genus in the cactus family, Cactaceae . The Opuntius Echios is endemic to Ecuador. Pretty lady, ain't she?

Cold Splinters went on a tour of Prospect Park this weekend with Wildman Steve Brill , the undisputed king of walking through Central and Prospect Parks while making painfully bad jokes and fake trumpet sounds. Brill also shows you which plants are edible and how to prepare them, knowledge that we regretfully know little about. Despite the nausea that the wild mushroom ( Dryad's Saddle ) brought on at the end of our three and a half hour adventure, the walk was full of useful information and we came home with [...]

I don't know if I believe in G-d, but I do believe in Led Zeppelin . I believe they existed from 1968 to 1980. I do not believe they were omnipotent or holy, though I'm aware that there are those who hold views to the contrary. I do believe, however, that their followers should not attempt to replicate or imitate them, for there can only be one Zeppelin and the Zeppelin is one. Some have learned everything they know from them, borrowing their sound and representing it as their own as The Black Keys [...]

If one of these things is in tact and is all dried out when you find it on the desert floor, it'll make a damn fine maraca: Cucurbita palmata is a species of flowering plant in the squash family known by the common names coyote melon and coyote gourd . This squash is native to the southwestern United States and far northern Mexico, where it is most common in desert regions. It is a sprawling vine with rough, stiff-haired stems [...]
