plastic bertrand - "tout petit la planete" (download) Belgium's Plastic Bertrand is probably best known for this song , which you've most likely heard, but never knew who it was. While I love that song, "Tout Petit la Planete" (released in 1978) is the one that really stands out to me. Sort of Italo-disco-y, with touches of vocoder. Not all of his recordings were great, but when he was on, he was on. buy

Director Danny Boyle is an unparalleled curator of soundtracks with his collection of songs for Trainspotting being his pièce de résistance and perhaps one of the greatest soundtracks in film history. Don't believe me? Check out the track list . His latest film, 127 Hours , is no exception. The soundtrack features a wealth of material put together by master Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman, but the most potent musical moment originates from a different composer: Belgian songwriter and pop star Plastic Bertrand . James Franco, as the dehydrated and physically beaten climber Aron Ralston, tries [...]

The Gaa Gaas From: Brighton (The Bright-Town), United Kingdom The Gaa Gaas (not to be confused with the similar sounding but differently spelled and now defunct British band The*Ga*Ga*s ) were spawned in 2003 from a garage punk night called 'Bomp' that was held in their home town of St Helier in Jersey Channel Islands. Although god only knows why they've saddled themselves with such a naff sounding name. It doesn't bring to mind black clad, cool looking garage punksters. All I can think of every time [...]

"You know how when you're listening to music playing from another room? And you're singing along because it's a tune that you really love? When a door closes or a train passes so you can't hear the music anymore, but you sing along anyway... then, no matter how much time passes, when you hear the music again you're still in exact same time with it. That's what it's like." - On love, Music from Another Room First in all of my Weeklies [...]

slow news day at The Guardian ... Belgian singer blames former producer after admitting his was not voice on Ça Plane Pour Moi . "The Belgian singer Plastic Bertrand has admitted that the voice that gave the world the 1977 Euro-punk anthem Ça Plane Pour Moi was not his. Roger Jouret, the man behind the Plastic Bertrand persona, had previously denied that he was not the singer on the record. But in an interview with the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, he admitted it had [...]
In light of my two recent French punk/post-punk posts, I couldn't resist linking to this story . The most famous faux-punk French punk musician Plastic Bertrand now admits that he did not actually sing on "Ca Plane Pour Moi," the famously popularized re-done cover of "Jet Boy, Jet Girl." Apparently, this was proven by way of French lingual expert as Plastic Bertrand is Belgian and the accent of the singer is Picardese French. For those unfamiliar with the song and who haven't seen National Lampoon's European Vacation , here it is in FULL glory:

Today, two experts proved what almost everybody knew for over 30 years: Roger Jouret, better known as Plastic Betrand, did not sing the biggest Belgian punkhit ever: Ça plane pour moi . Bertrand's legal team isn't impressed, they released a statement saying that in a legal sense, their client is still considered to be the performer. The history of the song is shady. First off, their was Jet Boy, Jet Girl , sung by Elton Motello (aka Alan Ward , a sound engineer who'd record an enormous amount of hits). Story goes that [...]

It seems as though all of our past/current writers here at The Yellow Stereo have gotten married over the past few years. In 2007, Pablo tied the knot and in response I decided to hastily put together a mix of songs I would want to hear at a wedding. It proved more difficult than I imagined, as every other song I could think of was from Magnetic Fields. That list is here if you wanted to see how that turned out; and oddly enough, it's one of the first links that show up when [...]
Plastic Bertrand - Ça plane pour moi Okay, yes, this song is from 1977 and it's in French . I know you may feel a bit wary but you've heard this bad boy before. So many times. "Ça plane pour moi" has appeared in a dozen American movies alone ( Me, Myself and I , Three Kings , and tv shows like Gossip Girl ). It's got a new wave/punk feel and it is completely infectious. Who cares about the lyrics, anyway. You're not missing out on much - the title of [...]

This Plastic Bertrand edit by the late great Ron Hardy has a loop that you can listen to forever. It evokes a patient dance floor full of enchanted people. Here also is a mix is from Ron Hardy's own club in Chicago, the Music Box which was in the old home of the Powerplant. This mix really well represents his playful and eclectic mixing style. I thought my search for anthropomorphic appliances in advertisements had ended when I found the saddest dryer ever . But 'twas not so. Here in the instructions for a GE, I find another unhappy appliance, this time a french dryer. Monsieur seems to be angry about someone standing on his hose. I think we've all felt that way at one time or another. Les Sans Culottes: Sa Sabine Plastic Bertrand: Ca Plane Pour Moi

Download: Silver Screen Shower Scene – Felix Da Housecat (2003) (Right Click, Open in new window) (Alt Link) *This song is often credited as one of the most pioneering and important songs from the electroclash movement of the early 00's. The electroclash style was created as a reaction to dance music at the time - a kind of 'punk'/new wave movement whereby dance music was simplified, distorted, written with art in mind, but in such a way that it would consciously nod [...]

Steven Wells 1960 - 2006 I once met Steven Wells. I was working at the HMV record store in London's Victoria Station. I only had a vague idea what he looked like, so didn't recognise him until I read the name on the bank card he handed me for payment. S. Wells it read, in an almost childlike writing. Having the aforementioned vague idea - that and the card. 2 + 2 and all that, I quickly realized who [...]
