What a weekend. Just think, a week from today I'll either be living the high life - on cloud nine - sharing a mix tape in celebration of the New York Giants winning the Super Bowl, or I'll be the brunt of every joke made by my six Boston-native roommates if the Patriots win. I'm [...]

Whoa, dude. It's the weekend. Better get your groovy self out to some shows! There's plenty o'options including the mind-altering two days at the Hideout , better known as PSYCH FEST II , Pilsen's swinging duo Ornery Little Darlings at the Empty Bottle , singer-songwriter Sad Brad Smith at Schuba s and so much more. Let's get to it, shall we? FRIDAY [...]

When it rains it pours, and right now it is pouring for Chicago psych-rockers Great Society Mind Destroyers . I mean this in the best possible way. The band, consisting of Brett Borden, Andrew Kettering, Will Sauceda, Jim Lechocki, and Nick Kaminsky, have just started recording a full length with Phil Karnats of Secret Machines , and so far it sounds like things are going swimmingly well. But that is merely step one in their quest for total ear domination. Test pressings [...]

Sweet Apple Alright Chicago, one week before Pitchfork Festival 2010 kicks off. Better get out there and see some live music to get in game shape. Lucky for you, there are plenty of great shows this weekend including the J Mascis-lead Sweet Apple at the Abbey Pub , Soft Speaker at Schubas , Swiss Dots at the Hideout , the always-a-fun-time West Fest and so much more. Let's get to it, shall we? [...]
You guys remember that if you follow one of those links to Amazon.com and purchase something, I earn a commission, right? Because I don't just post those links to prove I know how HTML code works. I mean, that's part of the reason, but it's not the whole reason. Oh, and if you're reading this, I wasn't found dead of autoerotic asphyxia this morning. Good job, me! And also, better luck next time! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of web space, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be [...]

High On Fire Feels like summer! So because of this fact, not a lot of chit-chat today. Need to get our and enjoy this weather. This weekend, we preview a bunch of metal shows, a melodic indie pop group and a local country outfit because that's how we roll. Lets get to it, shall we? FRIDAY HIGH ON FIRE As if I need to tell [...]

Photo by Audrey Leon Spring has sprung. Not officially for another week, but it sure feels that way. Snow is gone, and heavy coats are no longer outdoor necessities. Yay! Don't have plans yet? Plenty of great shows this weekend including Pelican at the Beat Kitchen , Ted Leo and the Pharmacists at Bottom Lounge , the Hideout's SXSW send off and more! But first, a reminder that Loud Loop Radio will be back on the air tomorrow, Saturday, March 12, at [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours Fueled by the herbal energizing power of green and black teas, Steve Krakow is a modern day Renaissance Man who has to cram sleep time into his enterprising schedule. The assiduous Chicago resident is the frontman for Plastic Crimewave Sound , a freelance artist and writer, owner of his own record label, Galactic Zoo Disk, and a member in two other bands. With the psychedelic music of Plastic Crimewave Sound coming to Austin for [...]

Every year, we listen to mp3's of every band scheduled to appear at SXSW. We then present you with an A to Z preview of the bands that we think should earn your attention. Whether you're coming down to SXSW (recommended!) or just looking for new music, there's no better time of year. There's a variety of music here, so buckle up for some different sounds. We'll be previewing two letters per day, which'll take us right up to SXSW Music Week. Then we'll give you our picks for the "Ten bands you must see at SXSW!". This is part [...]

Before we get to the shows, a reminder that Loud Loop Radio will be back on the air tomorrow, Saturday, January 22, at 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Radio DePaul . Lets get to it, shall we? PYSCH FEST I mentioned Chicago's oozing psych scene in my Sadhu Sadhu review and Friday night's Psych Fest at the Hideout is your chance to hear it all for yourself. The Chicago [...]

Holy Weekend Diversions, Batman! This weekend is stacked! We present you previews for seven, count 'em, seven sweet Chicago shows as the sky turns to grey and autumn descends upon our fair, Olympicless city. Also, you'll probably read more about this before the day is through, but just a reminder that Loud Loop Radio will once again grace the intertubes tomorrow, Saturday, October 3, at 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. CST on Radio DePaul . It's going to be awesome! Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program... [...]
Not too shortly after their last outing on Eclipse (and even less time if you consider their CD-r output) PCW is back and traversing space and the eternal chord, this time focusing more on their inner Hawkwind than the fiery guitar explosions that have littered some past releases. Stretching the pulse that normally cranks along under their electric writhing into a slowly simmering throb, Painted Shadows is a more deliberate and textured side of the Plastic Crimewave experience. The centerpiece of the album is shares the record's title and works itself into a pulsing bit of krautrock that [...]

The first rumblings from the PCW camp since their epic No Wonderland album, this strips back a lot of the excess and shoots straight to the meaty heart of psych-blues that the band has built their reputations on. It's good to see someone keeping the Hawkwind/Broughton/Stack Waddy axis alive these days. I was afraid that the proliferation of psychedelic yowl might have been laid to the wayside, but this S/T nugget of guitar screech, exhaust fumes and space debris puts those fears to rest. It seems that the band's got the bug for getting things down on tape [...]

After a few days of deliberation, I've decided that I cannot hide my geeky LOST fan persona any longer. I've got to air some ideas about Season Four, and you're going to have to listen (sorry!). I know how embarrassing this should be for me. Devoting a blog entry to a television show...is a sentence rife with material that any one of you could use to mercilessly taunt me. Whatever, so I like the prime-time, epic docudrama. I'm sure all your closets have skeletons in them too. Here's where I point and laugh to [...]
