Earlier this month, we posted the trailer for the Black Cab Sessions ' tour through the USA, which included a stop in Philadelphia and recording sessions with several local acts. The Philly-centric part of the trailer specifically lists performances by Freeway, Spank Rock, Meg Baird, Kyp Malone, Plastic Little, and Reading Rainbow; back when they were here last November , we noted that they had recorded with Grandchildren as well. For now, however, babelgum.com has videos of sessions with Strand Of Oaks and A Sunny Day In Glasgow. You can watch both videos below; more videos of the Black [...]
Last November the Black Cab Sessions folks rolled in to Philly with their, um, Black Cab and a video crew. If you're not familiar with these video sessions, the concept is basic. Bands get in to the back of a black British cab and play while the cab drives around the city. The BCS folks have had dozens of artists perform in the back seat of their cab: Weezer, Richard Thompson, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket, Bon Iver, Brian Wilson and many others. When the Black Cab folks (based in London) [...]

Click Brand new from CHRIS DE LUCA is a bouncing monster with hints of glitch and techno courtesy of BE BONKERZ . I'm all about the synth stabs which makes choosing the standout cut a bit more difficult. You see, those stabs are in every mix. If you made me choose one, I think PLASTIC LITTLE takes it with their (more) housey interpretation. Chris de Luca - Word Up! (Plastic Little Remix) [...]

"Basically I need to realize that no matter how much I enjoy listening to 'This Charming Man' while on mushrooms, Morrissey's voice will never give me the ability to ride my bicycle up a wall. I m... and if it's hot, i'm gon wet it down Plastic Little - La La Land Did somebody say it was Friday? Yeah, I thought so. Plastic Little are a Philadelphia 5-piece who rip it up on this Herve produced track. According to their MySpace they have been making music for nearly a decade but this is the first I have heard. Don't think too hard on what "dig out the onion" means, just hit the dancefloor and shake that "Ooh la la la." I'm definitely feeling the down and dirty [...]

Scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. It can work for everything in the whole world, but in this case I'm talking about music. Some months ago Hervé released the single 'Cheap Thrills' which features the mad rapping skillzzz of the Plastic Little as well as a sample from the Michael Jackson hit single 'Thriller'. No need to remind you that the song went big and got remixed (and played) by everyone. Hervé - Cheap Thrills [mp3] Also by now, [...]

Diplo is Philly-based Wesley Pentz. In case you were wondering, Hollertonix is a club and music collective. Pentz was born in Mississippi. He has DJed at the famous Fabric Club in London, which is where he was approached by his future girlfriend and colleague, M.I.A.: a British songwriter, record producer, vocalist and artist. Diplo has actively remixed a number of songs and is arguably more active in his remixing than in his production of original tracks. However, with fickle and scattered nature of people's taste in music these days, remixing is becoming more common than ever before. M.I.A. [...]

Alright kids I feel terrible that I have been slacking so bad on the posting so I am throwing caution to the wind and blowing this one out completely. So in honor of over-eating, over-drinking, and just generally getting over loaded this holiday season... here is enough music to take you through the weekend. Ryan Leslie ft. Jadakiss - How It's Supposed To Be (Remix) Burial - Archangel (Phaseone Remix) Common - Make My Day f. Cee-Lo Crystal Method - Double Down [...]

M.I.A. and Kid Sister have been blowing up lately, but they are not the only female MCs on the rise. I've seen quite a bit more club rap, reminiscent of the late 80's early 90's. A little reminicent of Salt n Peppa sans waterfalls. Artists like Amanda Blank (assoc. with Spank Rock), Rye Rye (mad decent) and Yo Majesty have been keeping it real nasty like. Amanda Blank (check her wikipedia page )She's great because she can spit fast, filthy and gets the party started. I first [...]

Plastic Little are the latest in the new wave of old school hip hop acts (is that a contradiction in terms?). The Philadelphia natives have been making a name for themselves slowly but surely, releasing mix tapes and working with or remixing an impressive list of people ranging from Diplo to Mark Ronson . Their album, Welcome To The Jang House , is full of impossibly clever mash-ups and grimy beats that would undoubtedly have Theo Huxtable [...]

Plastic Little - Foil Check out their myspace

Pink Skull Pink Skull are a mind altering mix of avant garde techno and improvised krautrock. To paraphrase the band, if you like Can (or Faust ) then you'll love Pink Skull. Everyone's heard this track by now or heard about it. Here is a 192kbs version suitable for iPod play, without "studio brussels" ruining the breakdown. Budding DJ's pleeeaase don't try to play this version out. This track needs to be played in a respectable bitrate to do it justice. The Proxy - Raven [ Mediafire ] I track you're even more likely to have heard is Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" and the many, many remixes that have been done of it. At first I didn't like the original [...]
I'm totally addicted to NBC.com's Olympic video site. Late night handball marathons motherfucker! Beastie Boys Rock Hard This was one of the Beastie Boys' first singles and it's kind of (in)famous since it can never be re-released because AC/DC won't clear the very obvious sample of "Back In Black." What a bunch of dicks. I guess they are too busy signing exclusive deals with Wal-Mart to do anything cool. I found this online years ago, I forgot were. Saul Williams Pedagogue Of [...]

photo by: Steve Mitchell I've been stalling finishing this write-up. It's hard to sit and rehash three days of a festival you honestly weren't that impressed with. But, I realize most of the readers of this site did not have to opportunity attend Lollapalooza, so I'll keep continue with the recap. Day two was the most lackluster of the three days. I am actually consulting my festival guide as I write this to remind myself whom I saw. We woke up late Saturday after a wild [...]
