Listen/Stream: Shortcircles - On My Mind A buzzmaking producer and engineer hailing from Oakland, California, Matt “Shortcircles” Tamariello is preparing to release his debut studio album (the follow-up to a pair of 2012 EPs) via Plug Research. As a taste of what listeners can look forward to on the project, the Booth newcomer has liberated On My Mind, a standout cut created in collaboration with Bay Area singer Sarah K. Melfy. The headliner’s boardwork is an exercises in ear-pleasing minimalism; a dry, syncopated percussion rhythm ticks away in the background, accented by shifting [...]
Last week, St. Louis crooner Coultrain had some questions about who's controlling the machine . But in a reasonably short amount of time, he appears to have found an answer. It arrives by way of a new single/non-album track "When 2 and 2 Make 13, a fully encompassing stunner. I'm personally not 100 percent what he's referring to when he sings "and if there's an endless mystery I think I've found it/ when 2 and 2 make 1," but it sounds damn good when he does. Maybe it'll all make sense when his new album drops April 23.

'When 2 and 2 make 1( an answer)' is a piece that Seymour calls from the depths of his being, it is 'The answer' he's been searching for throughout his existence, as they say, everything is complicated because everything is so simple. This piece also serves as an allusion and a foreshadow of what occurred during his return from sabbatical. Thus his journey begins searching for the lady who will complete the equation. Before we hear anything else off Coultrain 's upcoming Jungle Mumbo Jumbo project, he's shared a non-album track that serves as a precursor. "13th Floor (The '?')" is a cerebral, moody listen that poses the question, "Who's controlling the machine?" It's a self-aware, self-conscious cut that's all about trying to figure out if you are truly in control, and if not then what's the solution. The "13th Floor (the '?') is a piece that illustrates the inevitable question that Seymour must face when returning from his sabbatical. And because this music and poetry serves as a mirror for the universe, its a reflection of the question, though worded different ways, that we all confront, am i who i am, do i think what i think, do i love who i love, do i prefer what i prefer, because i chose or...? and then whats the solution? 13th FLOOR feat. Oakland four-piece Mwahaha reissued their self-titled debut album on LA-based imprint

Raphael Saadiq meets Sa-Ra. via FRSH SLCTS
Originally published via their own label in 2011, Oakland psych-poppers Mwahaha are about to re-release their eponymous debut on LA-based Plug Research, extended with two previously undisclosed bonus tracks, "Das Space" and "Amba". You may take an exclusive listen to the latter track below, which is heavier on the electronics than the band's previous material, see in comparison LP standout "Love" for instance. Still, the trio's indebtedness to unabashed psychedelic playfulness remains untouched. "Amba" starts inconspicuously, but slowly builds up a massive, impenetrable wall of noise and chaotic synth incursions, eventually giving way to a rousing [...]

This year, the spring equinox falls on March 20th. The March equinox happens when the sun crosses the celestial equator – an imaginary line around the sky above Earth’s equator moving south to north. the equinox is a time of fertility and creation. its a time to clarify desires, to set intentions, and also a time to plant seeds for the future. this is a time to celebrate. a time of rebirth and renewal. to celebrate it, the 1st single from Coultrain's latest offering, Jungle Mumbo Jumbo, will be released. it is entitled "Streams & Rivers". It was composed by Jason [...]

Los Angeles-by-way-of-St. Louis crooner Coultrain will release his next opus, Jungle Mumbo Jumbo , on April 23. And to give us a preview of what it will sound like, his label Plug Research has shared lead single "Streams & Rivers". Coultrain remains ahead of the curve with his vocal and production choices, though I'm hopeful everyone being all-R&B-everything these days will catch on to his music. Listen to "Streams & Rivers" below.
The re-release didn't help this album much. Plug Research Music, 2013 4.5 / 10 With this new expanded version of their self-titled album, Mwahaha added some bonus tracks and are reintroducing their sound....

Other than the blitzkrieg of festival event news and showcase flyer bombardments, the week brought us strange brews and kernels of inspiration. Top news tells us that Azealia Banks covered the Strokes' "Barely Legal" amid tweets of her working with Ariel Pink, a sketchy fatal drive by on French Montana's tour bus left one fan dead, and in what ought to be a new column called 'This Week in Morrissey beefs' we can add Paul McCartney to the list of the latest Mozzer feuds....

2013 has been a fruitful year for Oakland's Mwahaha . Mwahaha vocalist Ross Peacock tells The Bay Bridged the updated debut will be released on both double vinyl and CD, with the 6-minute bonus track "Amba" on the vinyl version and a 10-minute, unreleased techno song on CD. As the week comes to a close, we gather up the pros and cons with a bit of hope and optimism despite the odds. Chief Keef's gun range Pitchfork interview cost him 2 months in juvie for violating probation while Meyhem Lauren struck back at the 'fork with the diss track, "The Laurenovich Angle (Fuck Pitchfork)". While word has it that Lil B will not be performing at the Grammys, the legions of Radiohead fans can hear unreleased material Thom Yorke dropped via Dazed Digital while...
