1. Regina Spektor - Chemo Limo - Let's put it this way, there's not much I can say about Regina that I haven't before. She defies genre. I feel confident she spent some time trapped in a world of angels singing and writing poetry, but she stole ones songbook and escaped back to the world of the living and unleashed tracks like this one. [from Soviet Kitch | buy ] 2. +/- {plus/minus} - One Day You'll Be There - This band keeps showing up because [...]
Tomorrow night Be Your Own PET will be playing Bottletree with Irving, +/-, and Awesome Color. I've considered posting mp3's of Irving and +/- before but I've never gotten around to it so it seems like a good time. And speaking of good times, this should be a fun show...4 bands equals more bang for your buck plus I've heard Be Your Own PET puts on an entertaining set. People are throwing around the "star" word when talking of singer Jemina Pearl, so you might want to catch her now before she's selling out much bigger venues and starting her [...]
The hyped and rising +/- played a live set for KEXP before their show for the Absolutely Kosher showcase at CMJ on Wednesday. Check out this version of Steal The Blueprints , which sounds a lot less Postal Service and a whole lot more garage. +/- {Plus/Minus}, Live on KEXP 11/1/2006, NYC(mp3s): This is All (I Have Left) Fadeout The Important Thing Is To Love [...]
"You're a good person, Spike." -- Tom, after seeing his compassionate side "I liked him better when he was a wrestler." -- Tom on right-wing talker Michael Savage "It like describes like I 'unno like the space and time like dependence of like quantum mechanical systems of stuff." -- Pudge, putting a new twist on an old physics classic "I'm not three, you don't have to say 'bye-bye.' I'm not your baby." Tom, demanding more mature sign-offs "Eww. I thought I smelled something." [...]
The Slip - Even Rats The Slip - If One Of Us Should Fall Album: Eisenhower Released November 7, 2006 on Bar/None The Slip's Website The Slip on Myspace Buy Eisenhower I meant to post a couple of tracks from these guys last week, but I got sidetracked by the new Harlem Shakes song and I was on the road [...]

+/- (plus/minus)' record finally dropped in the US yesterday and it's really "the hot." I first heard of the band a few years ago thanks to 3hive.com's feature on them. "I've Been Lost" and "Ventriloquist" became two of my favorite songs of that year. They were quirky and abstract, but intensely interesting, listenable and filled with hooks. The dynamics just blew me away. Their followup just wasn't as impressive, however, and they fell off my map after contributing just those two songs to my musical family tree. With Let's Build a Fire (absolutely kosher records), this [...]

The new album Let`s Build a Fire from New York City`s + - (Plus Minus) has been putting my iPod into overdrive over the last few days...I think it burnt a hole in my iPod I played it so much yesterday...I find myself enjoying this album the more I listen to it..Its like a game to me now in my head. I try and find something new in the song that I enjoy the more I listen to it...So what was step 2..Right to the bands website to see if perhaps there [...]

I'd like a real honest opinion from those who've been catching up with the Graboid (on time this week!) every week. Do you find it helpful? Has it helped with discovering new albums that you might've not known about otherwise? I'm just curious is all, and if you think it's useful than great! It's fun compiling it every week and I know that it opens my eyes to a lot of new music. Christmas comes early this week with a nice little collection of holiday tracks from Aimee Mann . I've [...]

Song of the Day - 10/24/06 I've had a few songs by +/- (Plus/Minus) for a while and I was able to listen to their whole album "Let's Build A Fire" and I must say it is quite good. My favorite track off this album is going to be the song of the day. Even though the whole album is excellent, this one track really sticks out in my mind. The combination of drums, guitar, strings, and what sounds like [...]

My first exposure to +/- (Plus/Minus) was the surprisingly good soundtrack to Wicker Park (which also featured Mogwai, The Shins, Mates of State, and Broken Social Scene). The song, "All I Do" had a very dreamy post-rock quality to it that I liked. Plus/Minus' new album, Let's Start a Fire has a couple songs that are in this same vein, but most of them are a much more pop-oriented type of electronic chamber pop, that's probably better suited for today's musical climate (considering the Postal Service's success). They're guitar style is something I'd [...]

Watch out! This one is catchy, rockin', and just plain good. It's off +/-'s third album, and they're getting a good handle on their sound. They're out of Brooklyn, NY. You're gonna hear more of these guys, I'm sure. They're alternative, influenced by electronica, with straight powerpop as their shield. Mix metaphors however you like, you'll wanna play this one again and again. Let's Build a Fire (+/-) Plus/Minus Buy at iTunes Music Store Download " Steal the Blueprints " (MP3, 192kbps)

Absolutely Kosher Records (Sunset Rubdown, Frog Eyes, etc.) have announced a whole slew of new signings. Here they are, in order of announcement (not importance). +/- {PLUS/MINUS} - this band has been around for a while, with two full albums and an EP. Many of you may who got into music after watching Garden State know them from the Wicker Park soundtrack, perhahps. Their new album Let's Build A Fire was released in Japan earlier this year, but will [...]

Gods, Heroes and Myth A 5-part-series released on two mp3 blogs. A glance into the world of story and legend through the eyes of songs… Hi. I’m Ryan and this is my project. I have to admit, it was pretty exhausting, but the pay-off has already been great. My page: Ryan's Smashing Life . Remember: Buy music, visit art galleries, go to your local independent movie house [...]
Busy, busy, busy-my apologies. From Philly to Brooklyn in 30 days is quite the maneuver for me, I'll admit that. I'll pop in sporadically over the next few days to drop some quickies on you, though, so don't worry. We have an ace (and accomplished) reviewer joining the team who will be introduced tomorrow. Tonight he is off to cover the Flaming Lips show so we should have some pics and thoughts up tomorrow. But today-ah yes-today. I must run but I'll leave a few gems for you to [...]

Brooklyn, NY Yet again +/- has completely satisfied me with their forthcoming release. Let’s Build A Fire marks the third full-length for the trio, and it will be “out soon in U.S!†according to the band’s website . The line-up includes James Baluyut and Patrick Ramos, both formerly of Versus, and Patrick Ramos on drums. I’ll be seeing them at Black Cat on October 28 with Palomar and The Wrens . Wahoo! "Steal The Blueprints" [...]
It turns out that people or persons at ABSOLUTELY KOSHER RECORDS are reading SUGARTOWN! I was sent a track from the upcoming +/- (PLUS/MINUS) release "Let's Build a Fire" (out in October) & I'm happy to report that it's just as awesome as you'd expect.... AND NOW... A SUGARTOWN EXCLUSIVE (at least I think it is)...BRAND NEW FROM +/- (Plus/Minus) -- Steal the Blueprints !! Then to add to your happiness, I'm posting a few other songs that leave me SO SPENT after [...]

Sorry about the lack of posts since the 4th of July. I've been entirely unmotivated to do anything besides work, watch t.v. and sleep the past couple of days. Your Friday theme mix hast turned into a Saturday theme mix, but it's here nonetheless. I'm sure you kids are going to scroll through your collections and find a whole bunch more songs about emotions, so list 'em if you want to. Rilo Kiley - Emotional Poe - Angry [...]
