Those darlings of the London indiepop scene Pocketbooks return with an album that manages to impress on many levels. Their début Flight Paths (2009) won many plaudits with its charming mix of 1960s pop, the work of Burt F. Bacharach, Northern Soul and a debt to what is now known as C86. It wasn't without its faults, being naive in parts so I was keen to hear how they had progressed. One of those faults (well to these ears anyway) were the vocals of vocalist/keyboard player Andy Hudson and on album opener "Fireworks at Midnight" [...]

Facebook / pocketbooks.org.uk/ Pocketbooks are a delightful five-piece indie-pop band from London who popped up on my horizon with the release of their latest track "Promises, Promises", a joyous slice of uplifting, summer-tinged charm. It's playful and fun, with swirling melodies, bright harmonies and fast pacing set by the sweeping violins and singer Emma Halls' lovely shining vocals. It's simple yet utterly delicious, play this at your party and even the cool kids will be up and dancing. Their second album 'Carousel' is released this month via [...]

London Indie pop band Pocketbooks are releasing their new album Carousel on 19 September on Odd Box Records, and this is a track from it. They say of themselves: "Pocketbooks are a pop band from London, combining melodic boy/girl harmonies, spiralling guitars and delicate pianos. They've been together since 2006 and have played shows across the UK, Sweden, Germany and the United States." Download "Promises, Promises" [...]

The second Pocketbooks album was recorded during the winter of 2010. The band gathered in the basement underneath a ukulele shop in east London's Brick Lane, and played songs late into the night. It would have been a wintry record anyway, but the snow and the dark nights definitely played their part. The album begins and finishes with a bleak, distant piano, but inbetween there's a mix of

Pocketbooks are set to release 'Carousel' via OddBox Records in September 2011. 'Carousel' is the second Pocketbooks album, and was recorded during the winter of 2010. The band gathered in the basement underneath a ukulele shop in east London's Brick Lane, and played songs late into the night. It would have been a wintry record anyway, but the snow and the dark nights definitely played their part. The album begins and finishes with a bleak, distant piano, but inbetween there's a mix of bright harmonies, shimmering [...]

Pocketbooks have just released a brand new single from their upcoming sophomore album 'Carousel'. "Promises, Promises" is a blast of summer with it's shimmering strings, lush harmonies, and just a touch of sadness. It makes me feel the way I do on those days where I keep Belle and Sebastian's "Dirty Dream Number Two" on repeat. It's a good feeling and since I first heard them, Pocketbooks have always found a way to bring it out! Have a listen! If you're in love then head over to Odd Box Records and preorder your copy of the new record! [...]

Promises Promises London indiepopsters Pocketbooks have an album released on Oddbox Records in September and this MP3 is a taster. The main course should be delicious if this sample is anything to go by. Their sound has come a long way since I first saw them perform about four years ago at the Luminaire as Promises Promises is a lovely swirling dust devil of soaring strings and girl group harmonies, set [...]
Last night was our second DJing experience, and it was rather a contrast to the first time around. It was all rather last minute, meaning I didn't have five weeks to fret about song choices. It was in a coffee shop instead of a bar with a dance floor, and given the rain and other factors, there wasn't exactly a big turnout. Didn't matter though as I still ended up enjoying myself immensely. Here's what I played: 1. Herman Düne - Tell Me Something I Don't Know 2. Belle & Sebastian - Your Cover's [...]
It's June, so it must mean it's time for the obligatory Indietracks compilation album. Sadly this year it won't be released on CD in an attempt to reduce costs, meaning you'll have to burn your own discs for the long drive up. On the other hand, as it's a download only, you can pay whatever you like for it with all proceeds going to the lovely Midland Railway Centre . Every year they put up with us descending on them, so it's nice to be able to give them a little something back. [...]

As previously mentioned a new festival named Copenhagen Popfest will take place at Råhuset in (you've probably guessed it) Copenhagen from April 14 to April 16. Finally some details have been revealed to the world as the first three bands were announced yesterday and another three added today . As suggested by the inclusion of " Popfest " in the festival name, the indie pop acts will of course be dominating the line-up, which I suspect will be a highly intriguing one. As [...]

Belle & Sebastian is my favourite band, largely because of songwriter Stuart Murdoch's talent for romanticizing everyday life. He rarely writes about important people or dramatic events; instead, he transforms sports training into poetry ("The Stars of Track and Field") and finds beauty in fantastical dreams ("Judy and the Dream of Horses"). This same attention to detail is what makes Pocketbooks ' "Fleeting Moments" such a compelling song. As frontwoman Emma Hall sings, "I see joy within the syntax of a shop sign / Or a bus stop conversion in a West Country town." Her [...]
I've missed far too much music in the past year to make a proper best of list, so instead, here's a list of 22 songs that I've loved from 2009. Listed in alphabetical order, not preference. Even though all of them are bloody good. 4 or 5 Magicians - Preaching to the Converted So 2009 didn't turn out to be the year that 4 or 5 Magicians finally "made it". They did manage to put out their first proper album though, and despite a few missteps, it's an excellent start. [...]

Pocketbooks is lately, probably the most appreciated British indie pop band, if we were to consider the different reviews and critical opinions it has received from various music websites and magazines (you'll read about it in the interview). They come from London, they have released a 73, an EP, a single and have recently released their debut album - "Flight Paths". If you want to read about great indie pop songwriting and listen to one of the most infectious, melodic tunes then make sure you read about them in the following passages and make sure you throw [...]
