Poi Dog Pondering with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band : Mele Kalikimaka [ purchase ] I must apologize to one of our readers, who sent me an e-mail to request T-Bone Burnett's version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen during our Offbeat Holiday Music week. I did not post it then because I knew that it would fit this week's theme better. But I'm not posting it now either, because the album it comes from, Acoustic Christmas, has another song I wanted to post more: Mele Kalikimaka. The song was written [...]
Sorry for the absence of this here column last week; I got hit with an acute case of tonsillitis which definitely killed my Monday pretty badly. Felt like I was swallowing razorblades....but the good news is that it got me to the doctor to get some killer horse-pills to clear my junk up, so I [...]
Sometimes, nostalgia turns out to be a very good thing. A long time ago, The Adventures of Pete & Pete was a totally awesome show. And after watching it again just this afternoon, it turns out it's still totally awesome and a lot deeper in the musically awesome department than we realized at age eight (and we're not just talking the theme music). When discussing the music of Pete & Pete , it all starts with Polaris. The wonderfully '90s theme song "Hey Sandy" was penned by Mark Mulcahy, originally the frontman for Miracle Legion [...]

Wild Flag | Photo by John Clark What a weekend we have in store for you, Chicago. It's a big one with both Wicker Park and Sheffield Garden Walk competing for your attention with great local and national acts like Wild Flag, Wavves, Soul Aslyum, Company of Thieves, Canasta, Archie Powell & the Exports and more rocking the two neighborhood fests. Not to mention Thee Oh Sees are playing not once, but twice this weekend. Let's get ready to rock! [...]

Happy Easter. Here's some music to keep you company. The week of inbox purging went alright but I still have 300 e-mails in the inbox that I'd like to cut down to 0. So here is the first batch for your picking and choosing pleasure. I tried to keep my favorites near the top. Enjoy. Ages & Ages - So So Freely First track off the Portland band's [...]
You. Over there. The smug bastard with the iPhone. You think you're so "cutting edge," don't you, just because you're listening to Harlem or some other godawful Brooklyn hipster... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .

(photo credit: Andy Forbes) Locally known as "The little big band with the strong back and supple/stubborn heart," Poi Dog Pondering have been rocking for over 25 years now. From traveling street performers to the hell that is major label limbo, PDP have seen the music world as a whole and have emerged wiser and more talented than ever. Impossible to pick one genre, or even three to classify the band, PDP make gypsy soul music that is heartfelt and uplifting. In addition, singer/guitarist Frank Orrall is also a touring member [...]

Andrew Bird and Poi Dog Pondering are among the Chicago musicians slated to perform at the Austin City Limits Festival . The latter two can also be caught headlining this year's Lollapalooza. [...]
Chicago's very own Poi Dog Pondering is back with their seventh studio album (their first since 2003) simply titled 7 . To be completely honest (though) I'm not sure how many people even know of the band outside Chicago, but here in Chicago, the band can sell out almost any venue they might choose to play. Back in the summer of 1995 (I think) I remember watching Poi Dog Pondering perform at Chicago's annual 4th of July concert in Grant Park as a steamy rain poured from the sky and, at [...]

The Return of the Band That Never Really Left at All Poi Dog Pondering is not your average indie rock band. Geographically, they come from faraway places with diverse backgrounds: Hawaii, Austin and Chicago. Having been street performers, soul survivors, base and drum enthusiasts, rockers and probably about five more incarnations I failed to mention... The band is guilty of yet another new release - their seventh album. The aptly titled: " 7 " is 14 songs of soul and [...]
World-folk mainstays Poi Dog Pondering are back with a new studio album, the rather unimaginatively titled "7." (Is this an epidemic? My beloved Portishead named their new album "Third," and the rather less-beloved Bryan Adams named his new album "11."...

Poi Dog Pondering will release their seventh album, "7," through their own Platetectonic Music label on April 1. PDP will be promoting the new album with a US tour commencing with a sold out show at Chicago's Vic Theater on March 29. Poi Dog Pondering combined all of its experience to write and record "a straight up rock and soul record," complete with strings and horns. The result is "7." The band chose this title because it's their 7th record and because "it feels like a benchmark." This is the follow up to 2003's In Seed Comes Fruit. [...]
Timedoor's tech guru, Uncle Jack, reports: Danny Renaud, from Jason Lee's skateboarding company, Stereo, fell from a 9-story building and survived.
This is the kind of album where you put it on, listen start to finish and drink some frozen rum drinks. So, have a small class this Tuesday and enjoy a few party tunes.
