Poison Idea - Marked for Life (by slashyrface ) Live in 1983. "Compare, for a moment, Poison Idea to many of the well-groomed and immaculately-tattooed punks strutting their safe 'n' sanitised stuff today. Here was a band that was fat, ugly, ill-kempt and proudly degenerate. You'd never find them in a gym or their posters plastered on the bedroom walls of teenage girls, and their music represented an adequate enough summation of the bleak, brutal reality they inhabited: raw, belligerent and yet, for all its many sins, comfortable in its own sallow, [...]

"We can play this fucking noise until we drive you crazy!" shouts Jerry A. into the mic during a break between tracks for a listener-sponsored KBOO radio live session. You have to believe him. Poison Idea's reputation as a formidable hardcore punk band playing raw fast thrash and screaming out fatalistic lyrics, grew out of their near-legendary live shows which would feature band members eating coins, pissing in mouths, carving symbols into their skin, wrapping mic cords around audience members and hoisting them up in the air, before destroying stages, livers and grey [...]
One of the major downsides of running a music blog is the continuous and never-ending pressure to find and celebrate new music. Don't get us wrong - there's a hellaload of great new stuff coming out damn near every day - but sometimes it just gets so goddamn exhausting . Sometimes you just want to throw your hands up and listen to music that the power and influence of which is already cemented in the firmament of rock'n'roll. Sometimes you just want to listen to music guaranteed to make you want to smash stuff up. This is [...]

" We were going to write some self-righteous diatribe about the 'good old day' - but those days weren't good - we were pissed off then and we are pissed off now - go die. Positive = Boring " - from "Darby Crash Rides Again" 7" inner-sleeve Portland hardcore stalwarts Poison Idea are the beast that will never die. While guitarist "Pig Champion" died in 2006 and one-time drummer Steve "Thee Slayer Hippy" Hanford was arrested for a string of pharmacy robberies in 2008, the band continues to [...]

Rock and roll music is used by Satan in deception. People are led astray and they will no longer respond to the Bible. These people become distant from God, worldly, and immune to Scriptural correction. They become obsessed with their love of Satan's music and will defend it unto the destruction of their souls! Rock [...]

After our whole Taang! experience, and listening to the Attitude Adjustment CD, The Collection , I got to thinking . . . and mind you, it wasn't the type of stop everything, I need to sequester myself to an abandoned shed for forty days and forty nights type of thinking. This was more of the casual thinking as I sit in a drive-thru waiting for my latest order of gut bomb in a bag to be handed to me. The thought racing around my noodle (mmm, noodles) was, what makes good punk rock? I'm sure [...]

Fast, loud, angry and to the point. That's really all one I say about Unsilent Death by the band Nails . Their 10 songs in 13 lucky minutes makes Blood, Guts & Pussy by the Dwarves seem like a Dream Theater concept opus. I'm sure crusty types can rattle off the names of hundreds of "d-beat" style bands that they sound like but to me Nails taps into the dirty source of Discharge, Motorhead, Hellhammer and Poison Idea . Since this album is so short, the [...]
Glimpses contains a wealth of rare garage/punk/psyche tunes from the sixties.
I had the opportunity to spend some time with Early Grave prior to their show at Union Pool last month but got delayed editing and posting this video due to a recent move. The morning after I finished this video, I read about singer Makh Daniels' passing in a van accident in Oregeon. I only met Makh Daniels once but his death really threw me. Out of respect for Makh and the other members of Early Graves, I decided to 'sit' on this video for a while. Please consider making a [...]

San Francisco's Early Graves just released Goner (Ironclad Recordings / Metal Blade) as the follow-up to their 2008 debut We: The Guillotine . The band comes across like a runaway freight train as they thunder through ten tracks in twenty-six minutes with a sound that combines noise rock (Halo of Flies), hardcore (Poison Idea, Black Flag) and crust (Discharge). As such, it goes without saying that these guys are angry and pissed off. Tim Green's analog production adds to the grime and squalor of the disc, bringing both the dissonant guitar work and Makh [...]

Seattle hardcore punk band Black Breath is releasing their first full length, Heavy Breathing , March 30th on Southern Lord and the band is heading off on a full US tour with Converge & Lewd Acts . The tour kicks off in NYC on May 6th at Santos Party House. Tickets are $16 and go on sale on Feb. 17th. Heavy Breathing was recorded last year at Kurt Ballou's God City Studios (Converge, Trap Them, Disfear) and this new 10-track disc picks up where Razor to Oblivion [...]

Black Breath has played some well received shows here in NYC over the past few years with the last being a show at The Charleston last June. The band released their debut 12" EP, Razor to Oblivion , in 2008 (on their own Hot Mass Records label) and have recently signed to Southern Lord who has reissued the band's debut EP on CD. This 4-track EP clocks in around the 15 minute mark and it is a solid slab of hardcore punk. There are immediate comparisons to 80's punk bands like Discharge, Minor Threat and [...]

The latest installment of LimeWire Store's Ear to the Ground series shines the spotlight on Portland. OR. Curated by the staff of Willamette Week , the 17-track compendium features some of the city's brightest up-and-coming talent, including Lifesavas , Pure Country Gold , YACHT and Starfucker . Portland, Oregon has always been a music town: It's notable for being the birthplace of the Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie" and the longtime home of famed singer-song...writer Elliott Smith. But much of the city's rich musical history involves influential bands, rather than [...]
This is all kinds of awesome. Portland's School of Rock kids cover Poison Idea's "Plastic Bomb"...

A pox on: - my deviated septum - airborne pollen and other contaminants - the canned air at my workplace - meth heads whose stupid habit made it a hassle to get decent sinus medication - the nausea-inducing sinus headache I have had for three days now I'm going to lie down for a while. While I'm going to require silence, you can crank up these rather loud slices of fine punk rock. The Replacements – I Bought a Headache (from Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out [...]
