Ms Valerie Park Distro From: Olympia, Washington, United States Tonight's post is another in the Devil's irregular globetrotting tour of the world's musical hotspots. After Christchurch, Newcastle, Liverpool and Montreal tonight we're visiting Olympia, Washington courtesy of my good friends at Ms Valerie Park Distro who have been chroniciling the burgeoning scene via their Well, I Don't See Why Not series of compilations. The latest, the third in the series, features artists that are minor stars in New Zealand, Polka [...]

Tin Bees Tapping On The Roof Top During their performance at 2010's Campus A Low Hum festival they dished out free tubs of ice-cream for the crowd to devour in the hot afternoon sun. Afterwards I had a brief but intimate chat with all three members of Polka Dot Dot Dot; three of the kindest people I have ever met. "I'm mostly a vagabond, travelling around doing the things I want to do." That's how Polka Dot [...]

Today, Polka Dot Dot Dot 's Syzygy goes up for sale on vinyl. Having already talked about the wonder I think this album to hold (see Syzygy link above), I will just say that this record is also a piece of art. Put out by Electricity and Lust , a small-run vinyl label out of Olympia that hand silk-screens all their releases and presses said releases on colors of vinyl you just don't see every day. The 500 copies of Syzygy, for example, are split between transparent royal purple and turquoise. I will just say: get [...]

First thought: a ukelele? Second thought: awesome! And so goes the album with delightful nuggets of surprise and moments to revel in the find. The joys dwindle as the album plays on, feeling like more than 47 minutes. Lacks sustained energy but will be great on some folky mix tapes. Of all the timeless folk and folk-pop musicians that scour the earth, none are more true to the roots than those that possess the lo-fi nature of artists came before... long before. Polka Dot Dot Dot is one such band that follows this particular path, though their subject matter may not be that of an early Western era, nor may the harmonies and melodies. Yet they have a certain efficacious manner about them that bridges the then with the now . Syzygy [...]

Twin Sister and Twig Palace are right next to each other in my itunes, so perhaps it's only natural that I should write about them back to back. I guess I'm on a kick of chilled-out tunes featuring female vocalists, maybe it's the changing seasons. Twig Palace, besides having a lovely name features one of the ladies from Polka Dot Dot Dot , who has one of the loveliest voices I've heard in a while. Beautiful in their simplicity, their songs linger behind your consciousness and [...]

In case you were wondering, yes, this band is just as cute as their name. A little bird introduced me to this trio, hailing from Olympia, WA, and boy am I pleased. Where to begin? Polka Dot Dot Dot features blissful harmonies, and pure simple songwriting (two out of three of these songs count handclaps, stomps and snaps as their only instruments in addition to bangin' vocal stylings). There is something so comforting and familiar about their music, perhaps it is the old-timey feeling that permeates throughout. With each listen I am left smiling [...]

Of all the northwest small indie labels, Bicycle gets my vote for most likely to succeed. Run by Bob Schwenkler (Google Maps, Sleep Together) and Ross Cowman (June Madrona, Fall of Electricity), it boasts a powerhouse line-up that includes Polka Dot Dot Dot, The Nextdoor Neighbors, Yes Please, Jenny Jenkins, June Madrona, and more. I see them bound for greatness. This summer, we should see the release of the eagerly-awaited second album from the Polka D's, plus a new one from June Madrona and the first Bob Schwenkler solo album. Here's a small sampling of what they have [...]
Love Letter From Olympia Today I received a wonderful package in the mail box from Washington indie record label Electricity/Lust , who has just released a limited edition 73 vinyl pressing by New Zealand's favourite American darlings Polka Dot Dot Dot. Michael Ryan Dellinger, founder of Electricity/Lush just sent me a follow up email explaining the story behind the label. It's a story inspired by friendship and years of hanging out with wonderfully creative people. The story starts on a bus in Olympia... [...]

Dot Dot Dot ...
