New bands rarely come on stronger than this. And with their debut LP Silence Yourself , the London post-punk quartet Savages show us that they’re not pussyfooting around. The band’s guitarist, Gemma Thompson, started developing the idea for the all-female group almost a year before it was formed, and if this album is anything to go by, the time and effort gone into the project has certainly not gone to waste. The album starts with an excerpt from John Cassavetes’s film Opening Night , with some [...]

Can anyone explain this one? Carol Channing, Poly Styrene & Jackie Collins hanging out. Courtesy of If Charlie Parker...
I've just been watching the 1979 Arena profile of X Ray Spex singer-songwriter Poly Sytrene, which was recently repeated on BBC Four. If you missed it, I'd highly recommend setting aside forty minutes for it over the weekend; it makes for great viewing, with its live performances and footage of the band travelling from place to place in a no-frills minibus interspersed with Poly's thoughts on the world and the nature of fame, and is a real snapshot of the era. She was such a fascinating character, and watching this it's impossible to escape the conclusion that modern-day [...]

Remember the influential vocalist & songwriter here .
Louder Than War is marking the first anniversary of the loss of Poly Styrene with a tribute from John Robb : Not only have we been robbed of a great talent but also of personal friend whose phone calls would cover everything from music, punk rock, spirituality, Hare Krishna, politics and life with the perceptive smarts that were ingrained in her wonderful lyrics and songs. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

This last week has marked the first anniversary of former X-ray Spex singer Poly Styrene`s death. An iconic vocalist and socially aware musician, it`s a shame to think how much more Poly could have contributed to our sometimes unforgiving dreary world. Receiving a media copy of `Generation Indigo` last February still remains a mojophenia highlight for me. Sure I get music submissions on a daily basis and the`re all well received thank you but an advance promo from a childhood idol is another level. To celebrate Poly`s life and musical offerings here is the `Generation Indigo` re-post and all the [...]

Over the past month or so, we've gotten a lot of Christmas music submissions. It seemed like an appropriate time to share some of those with you. They range from straightforward covers of classics to interesting interpretations to originals - some of which address the stressful or unpleasant aspects of the holiday. Have a listen and more importantly, have a happy holidays! Whatever it is you celebrate, all the best to you from all of us at Those Who Dig!
Remixes. Posthumous singles. Charity singles. Competitions to remix tracks. Any and/or all of those things can result in horrible wrongs, so it's heartening to see it done well : Poly Styrene's No Rockefeller, remixed by competition winners Wass n Burls, raising money for the UNCHR's Somali campaign. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch
I Killed Kenny is a production duo from the UK. This remix is a nice departure from their heavier bass sounds. It is a lush downtempo version that ventures into drumstep territory at the end. Can't stop listening to this one. Enjoy! Poly Styrene - Ghoulish (I Killed Kenny Remix) [click to download] I Killed Kenny SoundCloud I Killed Kenny Facebook I Killed Kenny Twitter

YES, coming along new Gautier always seems to make my day a little better and hopefully yours too :) He absolutely kills it on this new remix of Poly Styrene's , " No Rockefeller " by keeping the vocals yet giving it a big room edge. If you've liked any of Gautier's other work than this will be no different as he incorporates his signature bouncy glitchy sound that we all know and love :) Poly Styrene - No Rockefeller (Gautier remix) by [...]
Digital tinkering and gruff, yet coasting femme vocals that are pitched somewhere in the void between Client and Sinead O’connor, defiantly pushes out a message promoting boldness when acting upon feelings of attraction, ‘Ghoulish’. A twisting instrumental increases in profile, to give body to this electro-pop foray that shows up Poly Styrene’s ability to be catchy and earnest. ‘Hercules & Love Affair Remix’, accentuates the warming, yet strained vocals and gives a more ambient slant to the instrumentals, making the track more brooding and contemplative. There is enough here to raise interest in the ‘Generation Indigo’ album that [...]
The late Poly Styrene may have left this world for the big festival in the sky in April, but there's one last music video from the former X-Ray Spex frontwoman. "Ghoulish," from her final solo album, Generation Indigo (Future Noise Music), features a number of Michael Jackson impersonators trying to win the affections of a [...]

It's not often that I copy-and-paste a press release, but I kind of feel that Giovanna has this one spot on. I grew up on a diet of punk and new wave; indeed, I well remember 'Identity' always used to spring everyone into life virtually every time it came on the college jukebox. Without a doubt, in her brief original incarnation, Poly was a punk icon. Future Noise Music will release a single for Poly Styrene’s “Ghoulish” on 7 August. The single includes a pulsating remix by Hercules and Love Affair and will be [...]

Poly Styrene 's "Ghoulish" was a tribute to the late Michael Jackson . The death of both these musical legends will be mixed, but the new video for the Jackson homage pays proper respect to both. You can view it above. Both artists are greatly missed.

Although music lost one of its most uniquely idiosyncratic legends when Poly Styrene tragically succumbed to cancer in April, she had thankfully finished recording her Generation Indigo album before being diagnosed, thus providing the 21st century with one of its defining statements, in similar fashion to her uncannily clairvoyant X-Ray Spex missives of the punk era. Following computer-age anthem "Virtual Boyfriend", which trailered the album as first single, comes the rapturous "Ghoulish"; sadly Poly's first posthumous single. Generation Indigo showed Poly as lyrically incisive as ever, still reflecting [...]
