Indeed Polynya has a name that seems annoyingly difficult to pronounce, although quite obvious when spelt and broken down into child proof vocal sound bites (poe-linn-eeee-uh). A sound equally complex to break down but a perfect puzzle when arranged by accomplished musicians. I get the impression Polynya are trying the up most not to be genre labelled, the promotional side of things is inertly low key, giving the Chapel Hill band a calming sense of mystery and artistic room to breath. "Polynya hails from Carrboro / Chapel Hill / Durham, NC and is a [...]

I might as well start off by admitting that I had no idea what Polynya meant at first, so in case there's anyone else as uneducated as me out there: "A polynya (common US spelling) or polynia (common UK spelling) (pronounced /pəˈlɪnjə/) is an area of an area of open water surrounded by sea ice. It is now used as geographical term for areas of sea in Arctic or Antarctic regions which remain unfrozen for much of the year. It is a loanword from Russian: полынья, which means a natural ice hole, and was [...]

Polynya , which apparently means an area of water surrounded by ice, is a rock band from North Carolina that excels in experimental soundscapes and male/female harmonies. They recently released their second full-length, Crop Rotation, via Childhood Pet records. Check out the album opener "Ribbon Dragons." Polynya - "Ribbon Dragons" (mp3)
Updates on previously featured artists seem to have become a staple of our existence these days and this time around we have quite the treat to share. Back in January 2008, we originally reviewed Chapel Hill, North Carolina based four piece Polynya and their lovely self-titled debut album. Since that time, musicians Andrea Parthemore (guitar, vocals), Luke Berchowitz (guitar vocals, programming),

Seeing a band name like Polynya made me pause and wonder if that was a real word or something completely made up. Upon further review... it's a real word. It's a sea surrounded by ice, like in the arctic. The music of Polynya is anything but cold or distant. It harkens back to the day when it wasn't completely unheard of to hear a female voice singing alternating songs in a band, much like this band. Their sound is warm and inviting and can easily draw [...]
We would like to introduce you to Polynya . When we kicked back, threw on the headphones, and listened to this artist we thought "A myriad of sounds echoing the instant when reality and fantasy intertwine and become one's own little secret." What did you think? Use a tag or comment to share your thoughts with everyone. Enjoy. Genre: Rock-Pop-Folk Label: Unsigned Source: [...]

This album was released in July of last year. North Carolinan band Polynya reminds me very much of Lush and Curve , two bands from the beginning of the nineties that had the same guitar-keyboards-drums sound which is so richly spread all over this debut album. Opener Old West (mp3) is the ideal opener for this record, as it [...]
The shop is now officially open for 2008. When we receive new music for a potential feature on MML, the mistake of searching music blog aggregating websites to investigate the saturation (buzz) factor is sometimes made. In the case of today's artist, there seemed to be a post for nearly every track from their recent debut release, so the pretty CD that was sent remained in it's plastic
Polynya is a phenomenon that occurs when open water space is surrounded by sea ice. Polynya is also the name of a North Carolina band that firmly believes in the phenomena of catchy hooks and two part harmonies. Polynya - Without a Trace and is your town on the list of cities that Radiohead plans to hit up on their expanded North American tour? Because mine is, and I will be all over getting

With a lively music scene to rival most college towns, North Carolina's Research Triangle Area (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) is home to three thriving campuses (Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and an oversized music scene to match. From this rich sea of young musical talent was formed Polynya. The band, which includes several DJs from UNC-Chapel Hill's WXYC radio station, takes their name from the geographical term for areas of open water surrounded by sea ice. Like their namesake, Durham's Polynya is a rich, thriving environment in vast [...]

A few short minutes ago, 2008 arrived here on the east coast. My goal was the write about all the old albums that I was going to before the ball dropped. Since that didn't quite happen, I'm going to cheat a little and give you one big mass of music that you can listen to while thinking about how long your resolutions are going to last. Here goes: Some really off-the-wall rockabilly/blues/punk via Denmark: Powersolo - Baby, You Ain't Looking Right : It's Raceday ...And [...]

if i had a second top ten list, or maybe just extended my current top 13 to say 20, polynya's debut would definitely be residing somewhere on either list. for the past 4/5 months its been one of my go-to records that i have really found an appreciation for since my initial listen. first listen unfurled some pleasant surprises, but as i delved a little deeper with each repeated listen i found that the its more than just a nice arty/poppy record. the group dynamic, especially the vocal interplay, is way beyond the scant 5 years they have spent as polynya. check [...]

Some bands just love talking about themselves. I occasionally receive one-sheets that contradict both their namesake and purpose in providing an accessible introduction to a particular artist, instead supplying a sprawling ten-page account of a band that formed merely a few months ago. While I admire such a dedication and willingness to provide mainly helpful information to aid me in my writing, there remains an aspect of missing elusiveness that makes the band seem more, well, descriptively mundane. Though this certainly does not coincide with a "Media Marketing 1013 course, sometimes a band's stylistic nature calls for a mysterious aroma. [...]

Polynya , according to wikipedia, is "any non-linear area of open water surrounded by sea ice. It is now used as geographical term for areas of sea in Arctic or Antarctic regions which remain unfrozen for much of the year." If that doesn't sum up this Chapel Hill quintet, well, actually I have no idea what this means. So to get a better idea, I contacted meteorologist Brick Tamlin for a better explanation and he said - "Where'd you get those pants? At the... toilet... store?" Polynya is actually a tight-as-a-drum, smoothed out art rock experience that relies [...]
