Has time sped up? It is starting to scare me. Enjoy Polytechnic . Polytechnic - Pep Anyone got bundles of cash they are trying to get rid of? Blood money? Proceeds of crime? State pension? Anything at all? Let me know.

Toronto - As I am watching the Beijing Olympics, it makes me realize how much I miss being in Hong Kong, being surrounded by my fellow chinamen, as we compete and scam our way to the top of the world. Of course, when the Olympics are over, us Hong Kong types go back to making backhanded remarks about how unsophisticated and rude the mainlanders are, and pondering why they keep on moving into our city. But, for now, we are one. With that in mind, let me continue my sporadic never-ending set of articles reviewing some of Hong Kong's top [...]
I spent my Thanksgiving holiday down in St. George Island, Florida and decided for my drive down I would catch up on my 2007 releases and listen to nothing but albums I haven't listened to. The first album I popped in was Aceyalone 's new Lightning Strikes . i had really enjoyed some of his older stuff, but on my first listen of this one, i thought is very under par. Hip-hop is a style I truly love, but it is so hard for me to find stuff that i really dig these days. [...]

A big thanks to the past week's guest bloggers Jinners , Murf , and Michael K , without whom my mad-crazy week would have been madder-crazy. I wish I could buy the three of you this Happy Monkey radio from Japan. But the whole dollar-to-yen thing has me confused, so you'll have to settle for a beer next time I see you. Here is November's batch of extrawack! approved, totally gratis and legal, Zune-pimpin', body-rockin', non-stoppin', etc., etc., etc., downloads. We usually offer you some great choices, but this [...]

I watched the new Oasis tour documentary Lord Don't Slow Me Down on Saturday night, and I was thoroughly entertained beyond what I had anticipated. It's a look at a band that seemed unstoppable in the cocky cocaine madness of '95-'96 (years which Noel admits he doesn't remember. At all.) now doing the unthinkable and growing up a bit. Stable girlfriends, kids, and years of living the rock n roll lifestyle seem to have muted the Gallagher brothers just a tad (even though they are still devastatingly funny to watch, and pull off an epically [...]
CMJ is upon us (well, it starts tomorrow, but same difference) and as I've been going through the band list looking for new bands the past week or two, I've come up with a few who I think have a lot of potential. Now, besides the obvious bands of Cut Off Your Hands and The Black Ghosts from HSB's IAMSOUND Records (ha), below are some of the bands that I enjoyed and will keeping an eye/ear on. I don't feel like writing a blurb for each so just listen and see what you like. This is [...]

I've been meaning to write about this band for months now. Polytechnic are out of Manchester, England and they are pure pop/punk perfection. The first song I heard of theirs, "Man Overboard," planted itself in my head immediately. Not just for the fantastic opening piano build-up and the oooohs, but also for the words: "There's sadness by your side / I was banging the drum / You filled your ears with your fingers / Just lay there and hummed / When you give up on love and [...]

* Polytechnic-Man Overboard (mp3) * Polytechnic-Fingertips (mp3) * Polytechnic-Won't You Come Around? (vídeo) * Polytechnic-Pep (vídeo)
Is this the gadget that will finally make me give up my vinyl? I'm not sure, but it certainly looks a lot of fun. And a lot of sexy. It's a 120Gb MP3 player, that also lets you mix tracks together. A pocket DJ system if you will. I would question whether it's really a good idea to make it even easier for people to become DJs, as sometimes it seems these days that a fast internet connection
"Man Overboard" I can't tell if Polytechnic's debut album Down Til Dawn is really as awesome as I think or if it's just one of those sugar-rush type satisfactions. I'm willing to put my money on the former, but I haven't absorbed it enough to draw any final conclusions. Let it suffice to say that it's really good, and that "Man Overboard" is a gem amongst many. Polytechnic sounds like a band about to come apart at the seams, or maybe it's [...]
Manchester-based Polytechnic have an arsenal of riffs and a similarly large amount of Clap Your Hands Say yelp-rock enthusiasm, but there's something about their aesthetic on their promising debut Down Till Dawn that they may need to reign in . Indeed, frontman Dylan Giles' vocals are soaring on "Won't You Come Around," but at times he's elevated (octivally speaking) so far above the his bandmates that it proves difficult to pay attention to either party. It's a testament to how good they are that the song succeeds despite this. [...]

I imagine it must be somewhat frustrating for the talented lads in Polytechnic . Here they are, one of the only new British bands taking a respectable risk by not following the typical "art-rock" trend of Bloc Party or Franz Ferdinand. Yet, they still have to endure comparisons to a number of American counterparts in literally every article written about them (including this one). American counterparts? Indeed, while they are a British band, the strainy vocals of Dylan Giles recalls the likes of Marc Bolan and David Essex, in addition to a legend who Giles may have been named [...]
Apologies for the sporadic updates. We're not what you'd call natural bloggers. We're lazy. We leave it almost three weeks to do a gig review. Well I do, at least. So, almost three weeks ago we ventured into the industrial wilds of Salford to Islington Mill for some kind of XFM showcase gig. T'Mill had been spruced up a little since we were last there to see the same band, among others, last July . There were comfy sofas, coffee tables and a new, bigger bar where dope-addled bartenders would forget your drinks order as soon as [...]
This should have been up days ago, but I've been suffering from a nasty ear infection and have not been in the mood for reviewing, so apologies. It also means it probably will not be the most coherent review ever. Coming from me that may be trouble, but I'll do my best. We really like Polytechnic around Indie Cred HQ and were intrigued by Cherry Ghost's performance on Jools Holland a few months ago, so needless to say we were pleased to see these two upcoming local acts co-headlining a show together. After our rather crazy [...]
