Alrighty- I've been feeling a bit refreshed this week after an extended weekend beach getaway to the Gulf Coast last week (except for yesterday, and I've only got myself to blame for that). But the shortened week also left me a little bit behind in my musical quest for new schtuff. Thanks to Aubriane and 5andman for your comments, I only hope I can stand up to such high standards- which is why I chose not to include any Alanis Morissette on this week's mixtape. What I do have is a blend of new, slighty less [...]
Lujo Records is known for putting out some of my favorite rock albums. I say it time and time again that were it not for the boutique indie labels like them, we'd be much worse off as a music consuming nation. Here for your listening pleasure is a video from Cincinnati-based quartet Pomegranates [ Label Site , MySpace ], "Whom/Who," which shimmers with the joy and youthful need for expression found in East Coast indie pop. Frankly, I love it. The video (off their first full length LP Everything [...]

time again to round-up some of the music that's washed up in the anyone's guess mailbox over the last two months. it's a bit of a big lineup this go round, as we're trying to jam two months' worth of music into one post. so we'll just get right to it - after this quick reminder: we try to listen to everything that comes in here at anyone's guess - though i'm sure, and afraid, we miss some things - so if you have music you'd like us to hear, please do pass it along . [...]

Between the trip to Virginia and the bar mitzvah and the Phillies game in the rain on Sunday, I'm still trying to catch up on my sleep and still unable to post at my new place of employment. So this will be a quick voyage down NMT, without any accompanying pithy responses. All I can say is this music is good and support the artists who made it. Enjoy. So after about three days, we have a first for The Daily Graboid: A Saturday edition! Believe me, this was not my intention at all, as I meant to have this up by Thursday at least. But, you know how sometimes you just put off something, and continue to do so to the point where you completely lose interest in it altogether. Now that it's the weekend, maybe you've already bought your albums this week. Got the new Death Cab For Cutie ? Great! Still, there's reason enough to check all of the other great releases that [...]
I'm reliably informed (wiki of course) that a Pomegranate is a fruit bearing deciduous shrub or small tree that can grow up to 8 metres tall. For those who are well heeled musically it is also the name of a band from Cincinnati whose debut album 'Everything Is Alive' comes alive this month. Pomegranate are not exactly pop but that's not to say that they're not entirely fruity. Listen to 'Thunder

Seriously... Road tripping is second only to Road House-in; Swayze rocks. We left Vancouver and made it to Revelstoke after a detour through Oliver wine country. Ten hours driving, photos, AM radio - you know the deal. Tomorrow we have to hit Jasper, Banff, Lake Louise, and The Hoodoos. Basically we are repping the hell out of Alberta. All we need is some Mad Cow and an old skool Jofa Helmet. Anyway, here are a few of the songs that made the time pass easily, and some of Nic's photos. Side note - it's about 30 [...]
Pomegranates Genre: Pop / Surf / Shoegaze From: Cincinnati, Ohio United States Pomegranates (that's the band not the fruit) are a Cincinnati-based quartet who serve up a huge helping of off-kilter art pop that's as infectious as dose of bird flu in a Kuala Lumper KFC . The rumours that the band were to release their [...]
Once a week The Wheel's Still In Spin highlights a band from the Greater Cincinnati area. Whether you prefer Skyline or Gold Star, you will agree that this band is "Better Than The Chili." Download "Whom/Who" (mp3) Download "Thunder Meadow" (mp3) Earlier this week, the Pomegranates released one of the better albums of the [...]

Cincinnati, OH I love everything about Pomegranates, and Everything Is Alive is absolutely one of my favorite debuts of the year. "Thunder Meadow" Pomegranates on MySpace Pomegranates on The Hype Machine

Here are a few of this week's new releases that The Wheel's Still In Spin highly recommends: The Black Angels – Directions To See A Ghost | Amazon CD MP3 | Insound CD This band takes its name from the Velvet Underground song "The Black Angel's Death Song." The music holds true to the sonic qualities of its namesake, from the tom pounding of the drums to the [...]
It's likely that most new releases this week will be overshadowed by Death Cab for Cutie 's latest, but while you've got Narrow Stairs in your basket, why not look around at the other notable new releases? Otherwise, you'd miss the latest from Old 97s , The Black Angels , Dosh , Kassin+2 , The Presets , Vetiver , and believe it or not, a (sort of) new album by producer T Bone Burnett , among many others. Tear a sheet from Largehearted Boy's list and continue shopping! [...]

You guessed it, Narrow Stairs is out today! Death Cab For Cutie's long-awaited umpteenth album boasts to be nothing like they've done before. Judging by a few listens today, it certainly resounds of the Death Cab we all know and love, but with a much different approach to every song. Our favorite right now is " Cath... ", which we were able to get a sneak peek at via Radio 1 who featured Ben Gibbard playing acoustic as well as The Daytrotter Sessions released [...]
In step with the like of Modest Mouse and Death Cab comes Ohio's Pomegranates , a band that mines the great popsters of the 60's without ever sounding decidedly retro. Their disc Everything Is Alive (out today on Lujo Records) is ten tracks of focused brilliance that is likely the seed of a great career to come. Pomegranates "Thunder Meadow"

Well it's Tuesday and that means new release day. Here are a few that we at SDM recommend. The best release of the week is probably Death Cab for Cutie's Narrow Stairs . It's much better than P4K leads you to believe . Give it a listen, and as always let us know if we've left anything worth mentioning off the list. New Releases, Album Art, and MP3's After the Jump…

It is difficult to capture the essence of Pomegranates new album Everything Is Alive with name dropping and meandering descriptions, though I will try, and begin by conceding that at a few different points and only in short doses, I find a similar atmosphere to that of early New Order. Again that is only seconds, here and there, for the magic of Pomegranates lies both in an experimental nature and their capturing melodies, which intertwine and augment with sublimely unique sensibilities. Perhaps, Everything Is Alive is the human experience rolled into an album: erratic, introspective, severe [...]

Local Cincinnati band Pomegranates have definitely made it big. I wish I could say it's been like watching a child grow up, but I've only been aware of them for about a year. One thing's for sure, and that's that it definitely didn't take long to happen. It's been just shy of a year since their debut EP, and the release of their first full length LP tomorrow (May 13th) is pretty exciting. They've managed to gain some well earned publicity by playing sessions with WOXY and Daytrotter (Coming soon), and associating themselves with some pretty big names. The band [...]
So summer break is here. At least for it is for me. So now that I'm back home hopefully the blog gets some more direction. For one thing we here at Whale Week cannot forget who the enemy is. Headlights - TV Pomegranates - Whom/Who
