Telekinesis! This is a great week for new releases. The Telekinesis! album is incredible. The band's frontman Michael Benjamin Lerner does an excellent job of blending pop with rock 'n' roll without being too cutesy. I have a feeling that this album will make many year-end lists. They will be playing at The Troubadour on May 18th. The Felice Brothers' Yonder Is The Clock is another one to check out. Pontiak are set to release a new album on April 6th (just three days away) and as a taster, the band are giving away a free track. The album is titled Maker (SG Review HERE) and will be out on Thrill Jockey Records, alongside its 2008 brother album Sun On Sun (SG Review HERE).
Holtzclaw Road, Virginia brothers Pontiak teemed with fellow Thrill Jockeys Arbouretum for Kale, the split 12" that included originals plus John Cale covers like the latter's take on " Buffalo Ballet ." Of course, there's more to each band than Cale covers. We updated Arbouretum's dossier recently with their raging (but also quietly echoed) stoner anthem " False Spring ." Now that it sorta feels like Spring may stick around a while (maybe), we have a couple newbies from Pontiak, both via their noisier, heavier (and Dead Meadow-esque) third album Maker , recorded in their "rural" VA studio. My first experience with a Marshall stack amp involved the hefty task of lugging it up my buddy's lofted barn steps with my right arm tightly wrapped around a case of Keystone. Inadvertently, we lost our footing and the amp toppled off the stairs about midway up, nearly crushing my buddy and breaking off part of the bannister. Last week was a good week for show postings at Daytrotter.com- our Internet-music fan-buddy to the Southeast of here. We got the 2008 recording of Nelly McKay, and we got the Pontiak session! Pontiak and Wye Oak were touring together last year on a shared bill and were scheduled to stop at the Mill in Iowa City on June 15th.
