Under the Dog needs a monthly mixtape. As this webzine trys to find it's identity it's become apparent that it needs some established content. I considered a podcast, an e-zine pdf kind of thing and remixing or mash ups. Podcasting sounded really fun, and that may even come in the future, but I just can't even seem to find the time to make my own music or write this zine much less write and record an entire podcast. An e-zine seemed tempting but I just don't have the design skills. That could also come in the future but [...]
Baltimore's Ponytail is for the restraint-repulsed soul, the impulse reveler. They specialize in the seemingly random sound outburst, but not as occasional surprises as gimmicks or hooks. The little guitar and drum explosion is their modus operandi and their raison d'être. All songs are sustained multiple orgasms of sound. And then there's lead singer Molly Siegel, yelping and wailing and begging for another like a pony in heat, or an alien, her vocal cords clearly controlled by the instrumentation, feeding off it like a radio control signal. It all comes off as ferocity [...]

My fellow readers. It is time again for our annual State Of The Blog Address. On March 10th of this year, Swan Fungus (nee Communications Major / English Minor) turned three years old. It has been a perilous thirty-six months filled with a seemingly endless number of roadblocks, but here we are, still going strong with no end in sight. During year number one, this blog averaged 175 visitors per day. One the day of its second birthday, this blog averaged 233 visitors per day. Last month, an average of 625 people saw this page daily. I'd say [...]

Ponytail 's new album is called Ice Cream Spiritual an it's coming out June 17th but you can hear a new track from it today. It's called Celebrate the Body Electric (It Came From an Angel) and I swear it was on the first album but maybe I just remember it from when I watched them open for Battles... Later in the week our new investigatory journalist Raven Baker will give you an even heartier helping of Whartscape - the origin and roots of its hideous name and the Wham City organizers behind all this nonsense - but today we'll crack into the long list of artists that call Bmore home and will, we assume, be simply rolling out of bed in their Umbros to perform this weekend. As Baltimore takes its place as the premiere center for the exportation of spazz, the warehouse scene is seeing its artists eagerly picked up by labels. Monitor has gabbed a few of the frontrunners of the scene but best of all has to be Ponytail. The band, which might pass for a spazzier version of Parts & Labor has distinguished itself by its erratic if completely unbelievable vocals. Singer Molly Siegal shrieks, squeaks and produces any other number of indecipherable sounds over the band's own seemingly tireless brand of punk. The end result being an aural ride in [...]

FRICTION makes its return to The Mercury Lounge on Saturday, May 12th with a lineup featuring two of Baltimore's and two of New York City's best independent acts. It's going to be one batshit crazy party headlined by Charm City's Dan Deacon with support from Ponytail , Meneguar , and Lions and Tigers , who are fresh out of the studio. Advance tickets [...]

A Baltimore-based tipster slipped us Kamehameha , the debut album by Charm City's Ponytail, last night, and we're kind of hooked on its 26 minutes of top-to-bottom spazzing out; like Deerhoof, they've got thick, sheeny guitars that burst into flurries of top-speed riffing, but vocalist Molly Siegel's post-verbal outbursts, which recall animals from all over the Wild Kingdom, are what really sends this record over the edge for us.
