Hipster's iPod — Guest Mix on Big Echo by Eugene Khrolenko on Mixcloud
I don't typically get that excited about what passes for shoegaze, but Finnish band Pooma nicely integrate a dark electronic sheen into their sound in a way that captured my attention. From the 2007 release Persuader. Pooma - They...

Time's whipping by so fast that I have to start planning out these last weeks of 2009 on CTRR. Last year, there were several festive year-end features on the old yuletide blog (groan if you must), including my Year-End Round-Up weekly mixes , the countdown of my Top 40 albums of the year , the Christmas weekly mix , and the New Year's Eve party mix . And I still have to work in my Day of 200 songs before all of this kicks off. This week's mix will be a winter one despite [...]

Pooma , from Finland's Helsinki, may have formed in 2000, but they are only now breaking beyond the Finnish borders to give the world a taste of their melancholy Scandinavian shoegaze. Persuader begins with "If May Starts Tomorrow", introducing us to the atmospheric drones that give Pooma the shoegaze label. This is pretty much what one can expect from Persuader ; loud, intense shoegaze drone. Where things vary are in the creation and production of song. Select tracks, like "They Won't Come Back" find the guitars taking [...]

Persuader Album Cover Shoegazing is a European invention out of the UK from the 80s to the mid 90s. There are elements of punk and sometimes metal on the harder side of the genre. Those who grew up in that era are starting to recycle and change the genre which went on to spawn grunge and alternative. Pooma is one of the more interesting bands to be dabbling in the field. However, their most recent album, Persuader, is little more than dabbling, as the lead singer and co-composer Tuire Lukka has said that their next [...]

I love and truly appreciate that artists send me their music in hopes that I might feature them on Road 2 Nowhere, I get quite a lot of emails from artists, labels and PR firms of this nature every week. I am sad to say that most of it is crap. My policy on the Road 2 Nowhere is to only write about music I like. I want to share good music with you, my readers, not tell you my opinions about bad music. Thus, its a challenging task for someone to try to get music on to my blog. [...]

Time to clean out the inbox again. There was not only a ton of music there, but there was a lot of really good stuff, too. And I don't necessarily mean to say that like I'm surprised to find good music. I got a few submissions from Touch and Go Records and every one of them was great – rockin' stuff. Not only newer stuff like Crystal Antlers, but also punk veterans the Jesus Lizard (who, by the way, will be playing the Pitchfork festival in July if you get a chance to [...]

Shoegaze, or as it's also known, dreampop, is one of those genres that when done not so well, is pretty tedious and self-indulgent, but when done really well, can sound more like star gazing than shoegazing. Having said this, I will now introduce two bands who are doing more of the latter than the former: Finnish band Pooma and their debut album, Persuader , and Florida band Kingsbury and their new EP, Lie to Me . While both pieces are captivating, they come at the shoegaze genre from different ends of the spectrum and at different angles of [...]

Helsinki based Pooma make cold glassy shoegaze tempered melodies bringing to mind floating worlds, disappearing constitutions, and comparisons to some of their better known Nordic neighbors. Their debut album Persuader, was produced and partly mixed by Gunnar Örn Tynes of the Icelandic band Múm, and released in Finland last year. audio: Snow Through The Calm http://www.pooma.net/ http://www.myspace.com/poomamu sic

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then taking styles proven to be successful and not quite imitating them, but putting your own spin on them and creating a new sound is a step away from flattery in the direction of being recognized for greatness in your own right. Rambling, majestic Nordic bands are a known commodity, especially with the amazing success that Sigur Ros has had the past few years. With lush strings and hauntingly beautiful female vocals, Pooma builds on this style, adding their own Finnish twist to the [...]

Already founded in 2000 Helsinki based Pooma is one of the best kept secrets of finnish music. Their mesmerizing mixture of shoegaze-pop, electronica & majestic strings has evoked comparisons to the likes of Sigur Rós, Múm and Mew, but as they come from Finland they take the scandinavian melancholy even a step further. Their debut album, Persuader , was produced & partly mixed by Gunnar Örn Tynes of the icelandic band Múm, and released in Finland last year. Unfortunately the band's finnish record label was closed down very shortly after the release of the album, so the [...]

Who : Pooma from Helsinki, Finland. What : You hear about this sort of thing from time to time. Band starts to gain some traction. Label notices and signs band. Label goes broke, band is back to square one. Pooma , Helsinki's shoegazing best-kept-secret, had this happen to them last year for their album Persuader . Musically, their album doesn't just evoke walls of distortion and reverb, but elements of pop, electronica, filled with strings and the dreamy voice of Tuire Lukka. For fans of Sigur Rós [...]

mid morning. I have no coffee. I have blank glassy tired eyes - what you seeing, boy? walking a bit too slowly for my own good. when it feels like everyone else on the tube is staring at you and the black pits you see opposite in the glass (they're not). listen to Pooma and try to figure out how you create a width of sound. this Sigur Ros/Múm feeling that the Icelandic and the Finns seem to do so well. it's shoegaze but bigger - this is not a soundscape Lush would ever work to.
