Popup -'A Time And a Place' (Art Goes Pop) Popup have now been around for several years, but this is their debut LP. And instead of rushing it at the first whiff of interest, it's paid off that they've developed it over time. Debut single 'Lucy, What You Trying To Say?' was released over two years ago, and appears again here. The album has been made with help from the Scottish Arts Council (now that's what I pay taxes for, not for bombing the shit out of countries where the infrastructure's already collapsing). Whilst some idiots [...]

We've never quite understood the motivation of hangers-on who would turn up for the opening of a jam jar. We're ridiculously choosy with our free time but last night The Pop Cop was made an offer we couldn't refuse with an invite to the official launch of The Picture House in Edinburgh. Let's be honest, it's not every day you get the chance to quaff quiches and compliment Fran Healy on his taste in sleeveless jumpers. (Lesson learnt: it's harder than you think to take the piss out of [...]

Well it's August, it's the much-vaunted Edinburgh Festival and there's... well, frankly, fuck all on as far as I can tell. Honestly, if it wasn't for the Retreat Festival I would be officially christening this the Shittest August in History in terms of Edinburgh gigs. The tail end of last week, with Eagleowl, Broken Records, Johnny Flynn, Sparrow & the Workshop and Noah & the Whale, was pretty much the pinnacle of the Festival calendar as far as I can tell, and my stinking hangover is largely the result of enjoying it all just a [...]
This track is by a band called Orzelda who come from Cumbernauld in Scotland. Actually it turns out Orzelda aren't a band at all but just one bloke. I wonder if that's his real name? Orzelda can usually be found playing bass in The Twilight Sad but not content with that he has recorded a whole album of very good stuff indeed. Check this track out and if you like what you hear (and you should seek immediate medical advice if you don't) then get yourself over to [...]

Little Man Tate make their long awaited return to our headphones next month with the release of their second album " Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy" which will be released through Skint on 15 th September. The band seem to have passed the test by following up a classic debut with another damn good record. It's a bit too early to really pass any judgment yet cos I've only heard it once myself but it sounds good to me. The Taties will be embarking on a full scale UK [...]

Yelle 's debut album, Pop-Up , has been in the stores for almost a year now so it's a little odd that she's just now getting around to releasing a video for "Ce Jeu". That's ok with me though, since the video is tres fantastique. Nice, colorful candy for the eyes and ears. It occurred to me the other day how great it is that artists once again have a way of getting their videos out there to people who want to see them. I grew up watching MTV and VH1 in the [...]

There are just a few major events in the music calendar left to tell you about... so we've decided to bundle them all together for one, big festival orgy. If that's not enough to make you agoraphobic, The Pop Cop will be hosting a very exciting competition this Friday which you'll definitely want to check out. What's it called? Feugh Fest . Where's it at? King George V Park , Banchory, Aberdeenshire. When's it kicking [...]

Popup will release their new single "Love Triangle/Pull The Fuse" through Art Goes Pop on 25th August. As far as I know this is the Glasgow bands second single following last years "Lucy, What Were You Trying To Say" which got a fair few votes in last years end of year poll. The bands debut album "A Time And A Place" is schedueled for release on 1st September and I'm really looking forward to hearing that. ______________________________ __ mp3: Popup - Pull The Fuse ______________________________ __ [...]
OK…so I'm a few hours late with the comeback. Don't blame it on the sunshine (cos there aint any). Don't blame it on the moonlight (too many clouds to see that particular big rock). Blame it on the boogie?? Maybe…. But it would be more accurate to Blame it on the Brickie who helped build my house 110 years ago as we've had to get some folk in to repair his shoddy workmanship and now

This is the fifth year that The Scottish Arts Council in conjunction with BBC Radio Scotland has sponsored Scottish bands to attend South By Southwest in Austin, TX. Their support has brought a total of over 50 bands (16 were sponsored for SXSW 2007 ), including Franz Ferdinand, Paolo Nutini, the Delgados, Emma Pollock, and the Fratellis, to the attention of rock music lovers in the U.S. I admit to being a total sucker for a Scots accent. Here are four of the Scottish bands, all from the vicinity of [...]
Ah, talk about a sweaty, drunken night of indie joy. Fucking marvellous. This absolutely brilliant lineup was put together by Jim Gellatly of XFM Scotland, and was every bit as good as I wish the T Break gig had been, despite the thick, men's changing room aroma of a sweltering Bannerman's. It [...]
I barely know what to say about this little news gem. Apparently a Killer Satnav! has tried to slaughter a poor innocent (and formidably caked in slap) student when it directed her across a train track that was only marked by, um, let's see, the presence of train tracks, a level crossing sign, a [...]

popup - Chinese Burn Chinese Burn is the a-side of popup's new single released today on art/goes/pop. It's a limited 7" affair, so if you want one (and why shouldn't you) then I recon you'd better be quick. popup have been getting a fair bit of national radio play recently, and quite right too. Although Chinese Burn isn't exactly representative of popup's sound, I kinda had to go with this
