It's been a few months since we've had some new tunes from The Joy Formidable , but here's another newb from the as-yet-no-official-release-dat e album "The Big Roar", expected in 2011. It follows in the footsteps of some of their previous tunes' wall-to-wall sound, haunting synths and an overall atmosphere of foreboding, layered with catchy choruses and reverb-laden vocals. They've been gaining a shitload of buzz over the last few months and if we can go by their last few songs, "The Big Roar" is gonna be chock-fulla hits. Check out the new jam below and [...]

Popinjays aastast 1992.
Soaring guitars and emphatic vocals run amok in the EP called A Balloon Called Moaning from the Wales-based indie rock act The Joy Formidable, which is finally seeing its US physical release happening through Black Bell Records, the label run...
Official Website MySpace Facebook Twitter Welshians by birth but now London-based, rock threesome The Joy Formidable will hit our shores this coming May to promote their self-produced first EP (or is it mini-album?) "A Balloon Called Moaning", set to be released through Passion Pit's Ayad Al Adhamy new label Black Bell on May 4th. I discovered them thanks to their very catchy debut [...]
The Joy Formidable have been around for a couple of years now, releasing two singles and an album in 2008 (their debut single "Austere" (which a somewhat controversial video that was banned by YouTube) was followed by "My Beerdrunk Soul is Sadder Than a Hundred Dead Christmas Trees", and their debut album "Balloon Called Moaning" was originally only released in Japan at the very end of 2008), three singles and a live album in 2009 ("Cradle", "Whirring" and "Greyhounds In The Slips" were the singles with "First You Have To Get Mad" as the live album) and already this year [...]

From the band: Very soon we'll have some exciting news for our US friends, but in the meantime we can tell you that there's but a handful of tickets left for our Mercury Lounge headlining show and that we've confirmed for Truck Festival in Catskills (god we love that place name), and Tulip festival. We have almost finished our debut album and we cannot wait to share it with you. Updates on the mixing, quarrelling, splitting up, getting back together can be heard from Twitter - we did warn you! Much love [...]
With the overwhelming emotions of The Joy Formidable's debut EP A Balloon Called Moaning having barely sunk in, the North Wales-turned-Brixton trio return with the perplexing, vociferously visceral Popinjay. Edgy, urgent and unnervingly poppish, with accompanying kitsch artistic direction, the lead single from their longed-for LP proper suggests a fair deal more than success on the horizon... If Courtney Love can't resurrect the true Hole, perhaps Ritzy Bryan's Joy Formidable can fill such a vaguely significant gap... Popinjay is to be released as a strictly limited 7" on April 5th. If sales of the [...]

Peep the new video from the ultrahyper, distortion-loving British rock trio The Joy Formidable . They've been really active in the UK over the last year, but only recently broke their US cherry opening for Passion Pit twice at Terminal 5 this January. "Popinjay" will be the first single from their forthcoming album, but is up on iTunes now. -Andy C Filed under: Music , WATCH THIS Tagged: joy formidable , passion pit , [...]
I'd forgotten all about this 1992 release - and I only came across it when I was stumbling around looking for something else. I recall buying this cos it was only 25p in a bargain bucket and that it must have one of the last things I bought on vinyl as by that year it was mostly CDs that I was purchasing - but I've always been a sucker for a cover version, and these proved to all be pretty
Rhino's cool "alternative" box set of 2007 is The Brit Box which I wrote about back in August. It's in stores this week. As I said then, it does a pretty admirable job of documenting the cool music coming out...
