Poplin is songwriter-producer Koi's project outfit featuring guest vocalists. The debut, Une Débutante Au Jeu , features vocalists Bridget Low and Lilia Yip in two songs each. The vocalists, prolific artists in the Singapore independent music scene with wide stage and studio experiences, have collaborated with many outfits apart from the multitude of bands they have fronted. Bridget is lead vocals to drum'n'bass outfit Breakbeat Theory . She has dabbled in various genres over the years and sees her involvement as a form of expression and release from the doldrums of day-to-day life. Lilia is the singer-songwriter from the band Morphy , which released their [...]

Well it may be rainy but it is starting to feel a whole lot like Spring, and what better way to celebrate Spring than with some very French pop by Singapore's Poplin . Light, easy and not unlike the pitter-patter of daily raindrops. Wait till the sun comes out and you have this song handy for a nice drive in the countryside. Poplin - First Light of Paris (feat. Lilia Yip) Download audio file (light_of_paris.mp3)

It's strange how I haven't posted about Wye Oak in the past. Andy and Jenn are from Baltimore and they already have two albums to show off (If Children and The Knot). They released a new EP this month, which i simply loved, titled My Neighbor/My Creator out on Merge label. A mix of indie rock, dream pop and folk with Jenn's amazing voice. Give it a go...I simply couldn't stop listening to it over and over again! Wye Oak - I Hope you Die [...]

The best way I can describe this track from Poplin is Stereolab crossed with a heavy dose of early Cardigans . If that's not enough to get you interested, I don't know what else to tell you. With a bit of a throwback to 60's French pop, this one man band out of Singapore has put out one of the best EPs I've heard in a while. If you're interested in the genre of Yéyé at all, you MUST pick up this EP. Download: Poplin - Une Débutante Au Jeu (feat. Bridget [...]

'What makes a song sound French, besides the words? What is it that makes certain French pop music sound sophisticated or classy? Is it possible to write a French-sounding song without employing the usual clichés? Or even beyond the music itself – can one actually impart a metropolitan French character into the song – for instance their fashion and aesthetic sense, their joie d'vivre, or their knack for blending the classic and the modern?' When someone poses these questions, an answer lies in either buying/downloading an extraordinary amount of French music (like me), or actually make the music. Guy [...]
