Someone Else Talking finds us harassing a musician long enough that they cough up the fascinating gems that are their current inspirations. Be it music or food or film or folly, we want to know what's getting these people up in the morning. And because we want to know, you get to read about it. Dylan [...]

Most of our new-release picks this time out have to do with looking around at the artistic statements that have already been made, and summing things up in a way that puts both the present and the past handily into perspective. In one case that means putting together the best of what one finds floating around in the air, in another it means tallying up all the tracks from a given period, and yet a third offering finds a way to bring old and new together. But in the end it all adds up to a larger view of of [...]

It includes tribute remixes by Vienna 's Peter Kruder (Kruder & Dorfmeister), Berlin based electronic Combos Mouse on Mars and Stereolab, Dub experts A Critical Mass, Moritz von Oswald, Thomas Fehlmann (The Orb), deep housed Roland Appel and Alex Bark (Jazzanova), and minimal specialists Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic) and Haswell / Hecker." Repetitive piano sounds, touches of soft rain, melancholy and bothering distress. This is how James Blackshaw's new album starts. 4 minutes and 12 seconds go by and no traces of acoustic 12 strings to be found anywhere. I check again, that I am listening to All Is Falling, his new album he released with Young God. Yes, [...]

Right at its tail end, here´s another edition of Wild Weekend , which means the iPod shuffle once again came up with a flaming six pack of goodies. This week it´s all about getting your fortune told, running the voodoo down while blood runs down King Street, meeting the Venus de Milo, and chasing a vampire. All for a price of course. All for a price. We´ll get this show on the road with a track from one of my all-time fave albums: the amazing Marquee Moon . An organic [...]

As mentioned, I bought a shit-ton of krautrock in the last few months, trying to dig into the genre deeper than the more obvious acts like Can, Neu!, and Faust. Surely I'm not done, though I may be ready for a little break. The number of 20-minute rock excursions I've added to my library in six months is too much! Not all of it has been memorable; some of it has been amazing. The Organisation: Tone Float (1970) Kraftwerk: s/t (1970) Kraftwerk: Kraftwerk 2 (1972) Kraftwerk: Ralf & Florian (1973) Kraftwerk has been one [...]

Sunrise, The fifth album by TX veterans My Education, is an interesting album. Originally, Sunrise , started as the soundtrack of the 1927 silent film Sunrise : A Song For Two Humans , but moved on to be a psychedelic, post-rock journey of deepest human feelings and descriptions of the desolation of rocks in the bottom of the ocean. It's not only those soaring cello/viola parts that fits perfectly as the album opener, and as a result - set the tone for the entire album, it's not [...]

Surely you have soundtracks for your great undertakings. Whether it's your triumphant scaling of Mount Kilimanjaro or your deadline-nailing all-nighter, you need a sonic engine. Here's one of mine, even if it's more often used to soundtrack toweling off and getting dressed. Grandiosity starts in your head. Popol Vuh - Hüter der Schwelle
Beautifully delicate ambient haunting psych-synths for eerie, early, sunny mornings.
Popul Vuh need the barest of introductions on these pages that have held so many electronic love letters to a certain period of Germanic Rock. Their euphoric, transcendent soundtracks for the incomparable Werner Herzog have in many ways overshadowed their own independent musical output. The melding of Herzogs desperate, often primal imagery to Popol Vuh's [...]
1. The more ambient stuff I've been getting into, coupled with the renewed desire for more krautrock and early electronica pioneers, has led me to finally giving Klaus Schulze a try. I've never really given Schulze much serious consideration before—a quick look at this 100+ album discography was enough to scare me off—but he's been on my periphery for a while. With no real sense of how to enter such a sprawling discography that spans 40 years, I figured the best thing to do was start at the beginning and pick up Irrlicht , from 1972—three tracks adding up [...]
