From Glasgow in Scotland. From The Eisenhowers latest album 'Film your own atrocities', we thought that this would be a good song to mark the 40th anniversary of the landing of Apollo 11 on the Moon. Click on the image to the left for some just-released images of the Apollo landing sites taken by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance [...]
I posted about the masterful pop/glitch fusion act Poptastic back in December, but after checking out their entire album finally, I'm so enamored that I had to post again. Take top 40 radio, insert into chain saw, enjoy! The recipe...

Seeland Records is pleased to present The Teen-Pop-Noise Virus , one of the most absurd albums of all-time by Poptastic . The music, like the band itself, was spawned from the warped minds of experimental producers Chris Fitzpatrick and Thomas Dimuzio. At the core of their debut release are twelve intricately mangled songs, but in the spaces between, there is much more. Poptastic's basic concept is accessible and humorous, yet buried in the layers of sound is a complex web of [...]
February may be the shortest of the year, but by no means is it the slowest when it comes to news. Between festival lineups and reunion news, showcase announcements and new albums, the last 27 days certainly brought many sleepless nights and vivid memories. So what better way to cap off the month then by offering another edition of our Friday Mixtape. As always, below you'll find a mix of the week's best new singles, remixes, and covers, along with mp3s from a few up-and-comers you may just want to check out. NEW Singles: [...]

Seeking fans of both Justin Timberlake and Merzbow , Poptastic is "just plain wrong." It might be too early to call this the "Best Gig of 20093 when the only competition from my end was Mystery Jets last Sunday and my performance of "Even Flow" on Guitar Hero the other night, but it's tempting. I'd heard good reports of Jamie Lidell's live shows and the promise of a "5-piece band" got me all excited. There was a good feeling the moment I entered the venue. It turns out that Jamie Lidell has quite a following here in Sydney - much more so that I had realised. In fact, the [...]

If music notes were colors, Dim Dim would be the brightest rainbow imaginable. Dim Dim is back with its sixth full-length album, Whip (Audio Dregs) and an obsession for all forms of sonic pop culture. Tossing fistfuls of guitar, ukulele, programmed beats, twisted synth and toy instruments into a blender, Dim Dim hits "liquefy", and surfs the sonic mixture as it spills across his musical universe. Deconstructing all things known and leaving a trail of brightly colored debris, Dim Dim has turned his back to the norm and rip-shredded a technicolored path to a genre unknown. [...]
At least for us east coasters, it's rainy and cold outside, and with the holidays still a few weeks away, these last few days have tended to really drag on. While our Friday Mixtape is always worthwhile, for the aforementioned reasons, this week's is particularly awesome. After all, what better way to kick off your weekend then a collection of the week's best new singles and remixes along with mp3s from a few up-and-comers you should definitely check out? Yeah, nothing much. NEW Singles: "Submarines of Stockholm" by [...]
The Moodgadget label keeps up its streak with this completely immersive new track from Calmer, off the Past is Present EP. It's experimental acid jazz, if you can believe such a thing; look for this release in January of '09....

dl: POPTASTIC - Hold Me ( alt ) ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------- ------- I should say that I extremely enjoy Poptastic as a concept. It sounds good on paper--a co-ed group channeling the '90s boy-band era sound and electronically mangling the resulting songs beyond recognition. Awesome. I like to indulge in the occasional shameful boy-band tune. And if I have a legitimate excuse to embrace this indulgence in a way that involving some artistic [...]

From Glasgow in Scotland. The Eisenhowers latest album 'Film your own atrocities' is now available. Anyone who buys the album through the band website ( www.eisenhowers.co.uk ) will get a free mini-album called 'Peep-show etiquette'. This features acoustic versions, rare demos and previously-unavailable tracks from the Eisenhowers catalogue. Song notes: 1969 The lyric in this one describes an attempted seduction in a singles bar. The middle-aged protagonist –who has this powerful, romantic belief in [...]

One of my favourite bands of jerky indie popsters are Auckland's Cut Off Your Hands. To my ears, they've got more memorable songs and more charisma than a lot of similar bands. I read a review of their debut album You and I that asked "Do we really need another Kaiser Chiefs?" Probably not, but Cut Off Your Hands are a lot more than a rip-off of better-known artists. Oddly, the album doesn't include the track of the same name, the energetic little number that won over quite a few listeners back in 2006. That disappointment [...]
It's absurd to think that I only discovered Josh Rouse in June, considering how much I've become obsessed with him. Maybe it's the easy familiarity of his music. It's not Japanese noisenik tech-house or anything - it's intelligent, laidback pop music of the kind that you and your dad can agree on. This is a serious compliment, as far as I'm concerned. He hit the ground running with a stellar run of albums and EPs in the early century - now anthologised in The Rykodisc Years , a pretty impressive double-CD compilation of his work to 2005. [...]

May 1982 on the evidence of this lost classic. I remember being fascinated with lead 'singer' Steve for some reason. Having not heard this track for 26 years until this morning, I am confident that the devastating combination of attractive yet non-threatening young man, shuffling ladies in silver tops and pseudo-Abba arrangements launched an attack on the 9-year-old Enda at a molecular level . Nature 0 Nurture 1

For most people of my generation, Isaac Hayes will always be The Chef. But to me, he's so much more: the 60s Stax super-producer, the 70s soul icon. How can you go past his classic albums like Hot Buttered Soul and Black Moses ? Well, you can't. So in tribute to the great man, who passed away far too early this week, I'd like to share with you my favourite aspect of Isaac Hayes: his Burt Bacharach covers. Isaac Hayes was all about the drama - the tension of a [...]
