Popular Workshop have somehow escaped my attention until now. They released their debut, We're Alive And We're Not Alone , in October of last year. From the few songs I've heard via Myspace (it still exists!), they seem like lo-fi indie noise a la the much-missed Test Icicles, though not quite so abrasive. They even do a wicked cover of Belle & Sebastian's 'Electronic Renaissance'! And you know full well I hate covers, so you'd better listen if you know what's good for you. They've made the following video for their single 'Reptilians'. I'm a sucker [...]

I just love the phrase ' Steve Albini produced'. It's usually a seal of quality and a pretty decent indication that I'll like the record. In the instance of Popular Workshop , it was a good sign indeed. 'Her Birthday' is the third single from their debut album We're Alive And We're Not Alone , which is out on that ever reliable bastion of cool music This Is Fake DIY Records . It's the first track I've ever heard of theirs, I have to admit, but it's 100% my cup of tea. It's got the thick [...]

Maybe you've heard, but the Olympics are starting started today. I'm sure it will dominate the news for the next few weeks, then the world sport arena can settle down until the 2010 World Cup. Personally, I'll probably miss the hoopla of the opening ceremonies in favor of having a pint or two with friends. Of course, it will probably be on every tv in every pub that has a tv, so there may be no avoiding it. So, here's another Friday Mixtape for you. It's got nifty new tracks from KOL, David Byrne & Brian Eno, Fake Ben Folds, and [...]

"...I don't know where I've been and I don't know who I am." Living in London, keeping company with Art Brut, and jetting off to Chicago to record a debut album with famed producer Steve Albini is fake do-it-yourself indeed. And Popular Workshop has no qualms about admitting it. They've certainly had a great deal of help. DIY be damned, I say. What does it even mean in a digitally dominated world, anyway? The band's acerbic new single "Popsong," which precedes their highly anticipated (at least in my [...]

The origins of The Far Cries are quite intriguing - "Liz Holdforth, an aspiring ballerina spent weekends at her grandfather's [...]
