Looking over the list of albums slated for release in the new few months, it's hard not to get overly giddy - 2012 is going to be a great year for music. Several bands that made names for themselves with wildly inventive and successful debuts are putting forth their sophomore efforts this year. The all-important follow-up album can be tricky, though, especially when an artist has made such a unique statement with their debut - I'm definitely eager to hear how these musicians have adapted their sound. Tuesday, January 24, 2012 Today's Quick Mention: Don't forget that the Kills and Jeff The Brotherhood are playing Stubb's tomorrow night. I really liked both of the band's full lengths from last year, so my guess at this point is that the show is going to be good. Tix will be $25 at the door. Secretly Canadian released Porcelain Raft's debut everywhere today, so I figured it was time to give you a reminder of how good they are via a [...]

Live: M83 + Porcelain Raft @ Concorde 2, Brighton January 22nd 2012 Porcelain Raft and M83 certainly share a penchant for the ethereal, even if Porcelain Raft instantiate this through a totally unpretentious set of bedroom loops and samples and M83 do so through sheer size and spectacle. The opening act, a duo fronted by London-based Italian Mauro Remiddi and recently signed to Secretly Canadian, release their much-anticipated debut album 'Strange Weekend' on January 24th. Though working within a similar sound-pallete, Porcelain Raft eschew the kind of sprawling, multi-layered, synthesized bombast of M83 in [...]

If 2012 is really the apocalypse, we'll at least be serenaded by lots of great music as our world goes up in flames. Yes, it's another great week of new releases filled with KEXP favorites, new and old. In fact, we've long been fans of Nada Surf , who return with their sixth album this week, which according to our Music Director, Don Yates, "finds them injecting some welcome additional energy and aggression into their melodic pop-rock sound via quicker tempos and some bristling electric guitar lines." Fans needn't fear that the New York band is trying to recapture [...]

Stay Useless - Cloud Nothings // Buy No Future/No Past - [...]

Porcelain Raft - Strange Weekend Mauro Remiddi has led a complicated musical life. He has performed Klezmer Music for the Berlin Youth Circus, crossed the 38th Parallel to re-interpret the folk songs of North Korea, composed music for short films and Vaudeville revivals , and, today, he is set to release his solo debut under the name Porcelain Raft. The record, entitled Strange Weekend , is a triumph of so-called "dream pop," a record at once both intimate and expansive, both gentle and arresting. Mr. Remiddi recently re-located [...]

After the excitement and the commotion in the newness of the year passes, it's a dreadful few weeks of purgatory; a period of reconciling the lingering effects of the year just passed with the swirling sweet nothings from the year to come, as you wait for it to finally take off one way or the other. Days pass with a peek of an eye, waiting to detect any hint of some spark. I've mentioned it before , but sometimes it takes only that one thing for the domino effect to push all else forward and freshen the momentary staleness [...]

As the year 2011 was coming to a close, Mauro Remiddi is an artist whose hype was building up into the New Year with EP's that caught the attention of many music publications. Under the moniker Porcelain Raft , his debut album Strange Weekend has been highly anticipated since late last year, making its release this month one of the more prominent albums of 2012 so far. Before venturing out on his own, Remiddi was in the British indie-pop...

Porcelain Raft - Strange Weekend By Antonio Tzikas Out of a Brooklyn basement explodes shimmering, ethereal sonic bliss in the form of the debut album from Porcelain Raft , also known as Italian born multi-instrumentalist Mauro Remiddi. Even the name Porcelian Raft suggests something otherworldly, and otherworldly is exactly what this album is. Bursting with swerving, dive-bombing synth swells - a sound that's halfway between ambient electronica and shoegaze influenced dream pop - the culminate effect of the production is a style that twists and twirls, creating a universe [...]

Put Me To Sleep - Porcelain Raft // Buy One aspect of music has always fascinated yet simultaneously bamboozled me - the ways in which different people react to the same artist or genre. Despite having had significant time to digest, dissect and form some kind of understanding of music's emotional abilities, some things still remain a mystery, namely the unwritten, inexplicable law of love between listener and artist. Some musicians can release a slew of music and my most enthusiastic response is "yeah it's alright, I guess", while others can instantaneously draw me [...]
