Under the guise Port St Willow , native New Yorker Nicholas Principe creates spacious, ambient music led by roving guitar lines and the artist's lingering falsetto, all showcased on his fine debut full-length record Holiday. The record's conception was inspired by a three year period living in the Pacific Northwest, and the region's grand, mountainous terrain seeps into the compositions which veer from soaring anthems to crushing ballads, all of which is draped in layers of atmospheric resonance as Principe assembles his arrangements with meticulous care. Met by critics with rapturous approval, the album has recently been re-released by [...]

Port St. Willow shares new video for the Holiday reissue bonus track, "Soft Light Rush". Although quietly released in 2012, Holiday, the debut album from Port St. Willow, the solo project of Nicholas...
First up you're gonna need 25 minutes spare to get through this beauty. It's an epic new piece from Port St. Willow, aka Nicholas Principe. His debut record, Holiday , was released last year - but since Brian Eno started waxing lyrical about it Downtown Records are giving it a deserved Reissue. Anyway this track is a new piece that's been tagged on the end of the record.
Gonna read a book now so why don't you spend the next 25 minutes watching the PORT ST. WILLOW 's new video SOFT LIGHT RUSH .

The reissue of Port St. Willow's quietly gorgeous debut LP Holiday was recently put out on Downtown Records and with it came a new 25 minute suite entitled "Soft Light Rush," divided up into four parts. You might have heard the lovely Part ii when we posted it a little while back, and now you can hear the suite in its entirety, complete with a specially made video for the piece below. Soft Light Rush from Port St. Willow [...]

The biggest addition to Downtown Records reissue of Port St. Willow's masterpiece of ambient psychedelia, Holiday , is the 25 minute "Soft Light Rush" which gets a slow, out of focus video treatment here. This could be the longer cousin of one of my favorite finds on YouTube (remember back when it was still novel?) Syd Barrett's acid trip , which a friend once described to me as the perfect metaphor for not being on acid when other people are -- "you can tell they're having fun, but it's just boring to you." [...]

After garnering praise from the incomparable Brian Eno , Port St. Willow' s 2012 debut Holiday received a much deserved re-release from Downtown Recordings. Not wanting to bore old fans with a simple rehashing of the album, Nicholas Principe, the man behind the band, recorded a sweeping 25-minute suite to tag off the record. “'Soft Light Rush’ felt somewhat as though it were a process of building different rooms in the same house which I could go spend time in and keep myself sane,” Principe says in a press release. [...]

Like a laser-light show, watching Port St. Willow live last Saturday at The Knit was an audio/visual spectacle. The band created true post-rock performance art — a sleek production equally suited to a large theater. Port St. Willow is often compared to The Antlers, similarities born of the long collaboration between Principe and Antlers' frontman Peter Silberman (who was at the show). But the sound felt more like Mogwai's instrumentals, Bon Iver and slowcore Smoky Robinson. With rock drums and prominent audio/visual effects, Principe added energy to the introspective, ambient jam sessions on "Holiday," Port St. [...]

Our Griffins , a.k.a. DJ Brown, is a young artist with a wealth of talent. The multi-instrumentalist has the ability to craft thoughtful lyrics, which are put on display by a vocal styling that finds itself somewhere between greats like Nick Drake and David Bowie. He's currently finishing up work on his new full-length album that also features the drumming talents of Eric Slick ( Dr. Dog , Norwegian Arms , etc.). Our Griffins will be coming in from the Lehigh Valley tonight to open for the ethereal sounds of Deli NYC fave Port St. Willow. Be prepared for [...]
Portland's Port St. Willow will be playing at the Kung Fu Necktie tonight. The band, formed by Nick Principe, has one release thus far - Even // Listen, released in November of 2010 - and has also been apart of Weathervane's Shaking Through, where the band recorded their song named "Stay Even". Primarily funneled through ... Continue reading

Port St. Willow Holiday Double 12" $22 PURCHASE All music deserves to be immortalized on wax, but occasionally an album comes along that needs to be on vinyl. Port St. Willow's Holiday is an album with sounds that bloom from the soil that we walk on everyday. Pair the magic warming qualities of vinyl with the pure earthiness of Holiday and a necessary listening experience is born. It's easy to think [...]
If you've listened to either of The Antlers' two records over the past three years, and if you come into Port St. Willow' s Holiday with the knowledge that Willow's lone member Nick Principe has worked with the Antlers' frontman Peter Silberman, it'll be pretty difficult to listen through Holiday without thinking of the Antlers. While on the surface this may read as a criticism or a complaint, by the time this re-released version of this 2012 album finishes, it will become apparent that it isn't. That's because, while there are a number [...]

Record Store Day may yet be three weeks away, but you'll find a ton of great new music at your favorite record shop today, including the latest from The Black Angels . KEXP listeners have long been fans of this Austin band, and in fact we even had them perform in-studio before the release of their very first album back in 2006 (they even sent us a lovely cow skull as a thank you, and it still hangs inside our front door!). Now, seven years later, The Black Angels return with their fourth LP, Indigo [...]

PopMatters is pleased to premiere the reissue of Port St. Willow's compelling debut Holiday . Sometimes, you do get a second chance to make a first impression: Even though Port St. Willow's compelling 2012 debut Holiday made its mark the first time around, the under-the-radar gem is getting the reissue treatment via Downtown Records on 2 April, in case you missed it the first time. PopMatters Associate Music Editor Zach Schonfeld sure didn't, tipping Port St. Willow as one of the break-out candidates of 2013. Schonfeld described Holiday this...
