"Sour Shores" by Portastatic from Be Still Please, due October 10 on Merge. If you loved Superchunk, you oughta dig this. Plus, hey, Mac McCaughan is blogger!...

It's been awhile since I listened to Portastatic I was into them when I saw them a couple of years ago in New York open for Rilo Kiley. Since then, they fallen off my radar. On October 10th, Portastatic are releaing their next album Be Still Please on Merge Records . I haven't heard the whole album yet, but the first track 'Sour Shores' reminded of why I liked Portastic in the first place. Be Still Please [...]
After this year's earlier sountrack work Who Loves the Sun , Mac McCaughan and the rest of Portastatic return with wordier tunes on their ninth album, Be Still Please . The album drops on Oct. 10. Here comes the necessary metnioning of Mac's other roles: in case you didn't know, he founded two other indie rock institutions, the band Superchunk and the label Merge. No stranger to this whole blogging thing, Mac keeps one of his own, where he'll keep you updated on Portastatic tour dates as well as the other ephemera kicking around his busy brain. [...]
Portatastic - Sour Shores (MP3) Yum. This might be the best new song I've heard this month. It exudes a cheery vibe (until you listen more closely to the lyrics), and does so without sounding twee. The sound is orchestral without being too overbearing. Their new album comes out 10/10/06. In the meantime, their EP is out, which includes a cover of Hot Chip's "And I Was A Boy From
Sometimes I think I'm busy. After that I usually like to remember Mac McCaughan. The dude finds time to keep Merge Records at the top of the heap, as well as record head-twisingly great music with Portastatic (and did with Superchuck). MP3: Portastatic - Sour Shores Sometimes I like to step back ...
I'm way behind in posting my weekly Sirius radio playlists. The last one I posted was Week 8 . Here's the playlist from Week 11 (8/15/2006). On this show I played all music that came out on Merge Records , and all music that happens to be available in MP3 format... 1) Superchunk - Becoming a Speck 2) And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - Mistakes and Regrets 3) Pipe - Chula 4) Dinosaur Jr. - Forget the [...]
Portastatic's Mac McCaughan must be taking note of labelmate Robert Pollard's prolific output, the band will release its second album of the year, Be Still Please, on October 12th. Portastatic : "Sour Shores" [mp3] from Be Still Please (out October 10th) Blood Meridian : several tracks [mp3] "Let It Come Down (live)" [mp3] El Perro Del Mar : "Dog" [mp3] from El Perro Del Mar [...]
Indie rock lives and dies in the voice of Portastatic's, Mac McCaughan, a striking sound, one you wish you could make, so you turn up the volume and sing along. McCaughan shows a talent for crafting the sounds of words, not only their meaning, in the song, "Sour Shores". portastatic + sour shores [mp3] eric bachmann + carrboro Woman [mp3] eric bachmann + lonesome Warrior [mp3] portastatic + sour
DOWNLOAD: Portastatic - I Wanna Know Girls (MP3) " Portastatic , the long-running side project of Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan, will return on Oct. 10 with its next Merge album, 'Be Still Please.' The set was recorded earlier this year at Durham, N.C.'s Pox Studios, a site chosen so McCaughan could stay close to home while still logging hours at Merge, the label he co-founded in 1989." [ Billboard ] Portastatic are playing a few dates with M. Ward in September followed by a short tour with [...]
Oh My Rockness reports that Portastatic are playing Maxwell's in Hoboken on Saturday, October 14th. Oh My Rockness claims that tickets are on sale, but Ticketweb disagrees. I'm hoping they do a Manhattan or Brooklyn show too, since I have a ticket to see Okkervil River at the Bowery that night. Portastatic, "I Wanna Know Girls" (from Bright Ideas) Portastatic, "Noisy Night (from Summer of the
This weeks mix is a little poppier and peppier than my usual Sunday morning fare. First off is "6000 Shipwrecks" off of the self-released debut cd by Sand Diego pop masters, The Kite Flying Society , Where is the Glow. I'm totally stoopid for this song and its sweet melody delicately soaked in reverb. Kite Flying Society - 6000 Shipwrecks.mp3 Portatstatic have a new cd coming out this fall. [...]

Billboard reports that TV On The Radio's sophomore album Return To Cookie Mountain , which was released internationally last week to rave reviews , will be getting its North American release on September 12 via Interscope (they're on 4AD elsewhere in the world). I'm still very much a newcomer to this band (first exposure just two weeks ago ), but am quite keen to hear the record and news of North American touring in the Fall is also good news. Almost every band member is taking [...]

Mac McCaughan, co-founder of Merge Records and member of Superchunk (whatever happened to Superchunk anyway?), seems to be finding more and more ways to keep himself busy. Before the dust has even had time to settle on his 2005 release, Bright Ideas , he is working on a score for an upcoming film written and directed by Matt Bissonnette. This soundtrack consists of 22... I would call them musical snapshots. It's very easy to invision these songs side-by-side appropriate video footage, but the whole project also works quite pleasantly on its own. If you can imagine some [...]
