Today we're looking at some videos that sort of preview what's coming Monday on the blog. We start with a couple vids from Sahara Smith, a young songwriter from Texas. I can't mention Sahara without also mentioning Mike Meadows. Meadows is the drummer in Smith's road band (he's in both of those videos), and the person who first introduced me to her music. Meadows first put me onto Smith about a year ago, and it never should have taken me this long to share her with [...]

My decade list has been posted. The Bird List has been compiled. Now it's time to look back at this year's new releases and attempt to list my favorite albums of 2009. It's important to note that these are my favorite albums and not necessarily a critical review of the best of the year. There's a lot of stuff out there that I didn't hear this year, a lot of things I enjoyed but didn't earn favorite status, and a few critical darlings that just flat didn't do it [...]

Just a reminder for everyone... Today is the final day for the Porterdavis CD giveaway contest. Last week, I introduced you to the band Porterdavis and their bluesy style of American Roots music. They played at WDVX last Monday on the Blue Plate Special and came back to town Wednesday night for a show at the Preservation Pub. Before their Wednesday night gig, Daniel Barrett, Mike Meadows, and Simon Wallace of Porterdavis stopped by the WDVX Studio to chat for a bit and play a couple of songs from their new self-titled CD. I recorded our conversation and would like to share it with you here. As [...]

*** Well... The results are in from last night's Americana Honors and Awards Show, and the winners are Buddy Miller, Buddy Miller, Buddy Miller, Buddy Miller, Gurf Morlix, and Justin Townes Earle. Obviously, Buddy was the big winner on the night. He walked away with wins for "Artist of the Year," "Duo/Group of the Year" with his wife Julie Miller, "Album of the Year" for Written in Chalk (also with Julie), and "Song of the Year" for his duet with Patty Griffin called "Chalk." [...]

Here's another heads up for a chance to hear some great live music over the airwaves. If you tune in to WDVX or WDVX.com today (Monday) at noon (Eastern), you'll be treated to a fine bluesy roots stew served up by Austin's Porterdavis . Porterdavis is actually a trio of songwriters brought together by a shared love of blues and folk music and songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt and Muddy Waters. Daniel Barrett handles the guitars, Simon Wallace blows a Chicago-style blues harp, and Mike Meadows provides the percussion. All three write. [...]

PORTERDAVIS-"Porterdavis" Porterdavis have, apparently, been around for quite some time, but I've never heard of them before they sent me their self-titled (but not debut) album—ten songs of rootsy country music, honest and earnest. The record is never boring or bad, and has some wonderful, shining moments, such as the songs "Strange Way to Grieve" and "Sunshine." Lyrically, it's up and down. There's moments of beauty: "Heaven help me when I think I'm not enough/Heaven help me when I think I am," is the refrain on "Strange Way to [...]

Going offline for two weeks means returning to an inbox in the triple digits, and though my brain is swimming a bit from trying to cut it down to size in one afternoon, sifting through the backlog of sound is made easier by the presence of a few true gems, and a few others with moments of greatness they just cry out to be heard in spite of any rough edges. I'll have video, audio, and commentary from the newest and best from my annual pilgrimage through the New England folk scene anon, probably early [...]
