No one buys albums anymore, goes the music industry truism. And yet, for all that the format's commercial viability may or may not be on the wane, sitting and listening to a great album from start to finish is one of the greatest pleasures that music can bring. Flavorwire recently got to thinking about how one might build a record collection if you really only did buy one record a year. So here's the result of our thought exercise: 50 albums you really should own, one a year from 1963 until the present day. Yes, of course this mean things [...]

Phoenix-based There There satisfies that '90s-trip-hop-rock itch that few others can scratch.

Glastonbury.

By Tom Fake April 24, 2013 The Hot Five – My views on five tracks that have attracted my interest in any given week, usually with an older track thrown in the mix for something a bit different. Tracks usually concentrate on guitar-based releases, but really focusing on anything and everything that comes to my attention. Track of the Week : Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams – ‘Get Lucky’ It wouldn’t be anything else this week. This prelude to their fourth studio album [...]

Convo in the office just included the CHER and my contribution to that table was sharing the gene decade-old mash-up BELIEVE got with the PORTISHEAD 's GLORY BOX.
So with this year's Record Store Day now only four away, you've doubtless got that list scribbled up alright by now, right? The alarm's set for a time prior to the sun cracking like an abnormally viscid yolk oozing its sluggish way across the bleariest of retinae; the once swelling swear jar's been raided in what was the greatest fucking heist your kitchen's yet seen; the swag, or rather the copious dollops of shrapnel counted. And soon it'll all be yours – Daniel Johnston's Space Ducks on limited numbered 123 with the six-panel poster stuffed inside; The Residents' quintessentially batshite [...]

IMOGEN ARCHER has just joined the PURPLE SNEAKERS online team having recently made the move over to Melbourne from her native home of Adelaide. Having served diligently as a fantastic weekly track spinner at her local haunt ROCKET BAR , IMOGEN knows a thing or two about music. We're psyched to have her as the newest member of our crew and decided we just had to grab her TOP FIVE everythings! TOP FIVE ALBUMS Afraid of heights - [...]
Following on from Redg Weeks' superlative Run To Your Mama redux of a couple weeks back, the In to Weeks' Vada – Geoff Barrow – here clambers up the reverb tower to rework a previously unreleased Anika track entitled Bloodhound. Typically claustrophobic though at that same time a little more loose in contrast with the usual brood, the adopted Berlinerin returns with quintessentially inauspicious lyrics of "They're coming to get you/ They won't stop 'til you're found" which ooze forth from gloopy gusts of echo and fade. Similarly rhythmically, there's an [...]

Don't let the hot pink and neon blue hues on the cover of The Knife's latest opus Shaking the Habitual fool you into thinking this is a light romp for your next spring break party. Heavy on atmospherics and short on anything that could be considered light, the first album from The Knife in seven years feels like you're in the middle of a horror movie with no escape. It's a well-composed freak show of a record that may not be as good [...]
So we now know who is to play the apex of the Pyramid Stage across the three nights; who is to enrapture the newfangled dance hamlet, Silver Hayes; and who is to promenade The Park (inevitably eye-popping special guests aside, for which my money's on Atoms for Peace ) during this year's edition of The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts . Though the best element of this year's line up thus far? No, it's not the fact that The Rolling Stones are to start us up come the Saturday night as so many so optimistically [...]

I remembering sitting in the movie theater watching Drive , and being absolutely blown away by the soundtrack. It was the selections of College and Kavinsky's music in that film that really renewed my addiction to synth pop. Kavinsky recently released his debut album, Outrun (thankfully on vinyl), and now the announcement comes through of College's Secret Diary and Teenage Color receiving the vinyl treatment. The vinyl (and CD...) release of College's music will be issued for the first time ever through Geoff Barlow's (Portishead, DROKK, Quakers) label, Invada. Scheduled for [...]
