Geoff Barrow, of seminal trip-hop group Portishead, continues his nonstop musical trailblazing with lo-fi hip-hop side project Quakers , who've signed with Peanut Butter Wolf's L.A.-based Stones Throw label. Despite rumors of a new Portishead album swirling for the past few years, Barrow's other side project, Beak>, with Billy Fuller (Fuzz Against Junk) and Matt Williams (Team Brick), released a self-titled album from electronic jam-psychedlic act Beak> in 2009 and tour the world in 2012. Does this mean we'll have to wait until 2013 for a new Portishead album? Quakers' 41-track debut album mines completely different territory [...]

Photo by Philip Cosores The Guardian reports that Portishead member Geoff Barrow is set to release another album without the Portishead moniker. But, the album will not be under his Beak> name (who are apparently releasing their second album soon, though). Rather, Barrow has set up hip-hop project called Quakers, which is said to feature over 35 members, and will release their debut album on April 9th via Stones Throw Records. The idea behind Quakers is that a series of beats were posted on the band's Myspace for anyone to download. [...]

Anyone who finishes Curtis Hanson's Oscar-winning 2002 film 8 Mile thinks the same thing: Man, I want to record a hip-hop album . Apparently Geoff Barrow owns that DVD. On April 9th, the Portishead multi-instrumentalist will enter the hip-hop genre with his Quakers project, issuing a self-titled, two-disc effort through Stones Throw Records, as Exclaim points out. No, we're not making this up. Under the moniker Fuzzface, Barrow has assembled a rag-tag crew that sports Portishead engineer Stuart Matthews, who will go by 7-Stu-7, and Aussie producer Katalyst (clearly, he already has a name). Outside [...]

Geoff Barrow, man. First, he creates Portishead, arguably the best band Britain has produced over the last 15 years (sorry Blur and Oasis fans). Then instead of buying ivory turntable needles from the king ransom's raised off sold-out Portishead tours, he funnels his time and energy into that most dead-end of economic propositions: a label. This is when he's not busy excoriating British radio and mediocre bands via Twitter. In the words of Waka Flocka: round of applause. The label in question is Invada Records, who have received scant coverage in the States, ostensibly thanks to our American [...]
![[Introducing] – Nedry](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4020420_lg.jpg)
Tweet Photo © Sebastien Dehesdin You may well have heard of Nedry before, since their debut EP, "Condors" , kicked up a veritable cack-cyclone of press interest. That said, my sources (that would be their website ) inform me that an LP is on the way, so there's no time like the present for making sure you're all keeping your eyes and ears out for this London threesome. It [...]
Radiohead and Portishead define this musichead's high school experience. The Owl Mag photographer, Wolfgangg Sauer, takes us on a trip.

Speaking of openers on larger tours playing Mercury Lounge shows, Beacon , who are currently on a tour with Tycho , which hits MHOW on February 4 with Oneohtrix Point Never ( tickets ), just announced a show at the NYC venue happening on March 2 with Xylos and Grimace Federation . Tickets , currently on AmEx presale, go on public sale Friday (1/27) at noon. Tycho [...]

Here's a photo of a prepubescent Geoff Barrow thwacking a drumkit that practically engulfs his wiry frame. Whodathunk at the time whoever took said photo (and evidently neglected to employ the camera's redeye reduction feature) that the above kiddo would go on to establish one of Britain's most persistently progressive labels in the imperial guise of Invada and propel perhaps the country's bestest band ? Irregardless, Invada this week released its 2012 sampler and here are our highlights... First up: new one from the [...]
The stuff that dreams are made of... C'mon, you didn't actually think I'd publish my 2011 lists during the actual year of 2011...did you? Now that I have the undivided attention of eight people: Best Show(s) That I Never Saw Lightning Bolt at Healthy Times Fun Club (RIP) Soundgarden/Queens of the Stone Age/Mastodon etc. at the Gorge Pig Destroyer at [...]

Download: Moonsatellite remixes Portishead: Glory Daze Moonsatellite remixes Portishead's 1994 Dummy LP for Glory Daze, his new beat tape which is available now for free download via Culture King Media. The release was created using Ableton Live 8 & the Akai MPK Mini, and all of the sounds (sans a couple of bass tones) came from the Portishead record. Enjoy.

There's something brewing with Portishead . After the release of Third in 2008 , the Bristol-based trio lay relatively low, focusing more on family and pet projects than driving the wheels off the tour van. But over last summer Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley began to again make their presence felt, packing in a hectic series of European festival dates before playing a bunch of North American gigs. It's a sign that some fresh recording sessions may not be too far away. [...]
How about those New York Football Giants, huh? The defense looked great today, Hakeem Nicks reasserted himself as the team's premiere wide receiver, Brandon Jacobs showed why the offense should be run through him…it made me very excited to see the game against Green Bay next week. I think it's going to be a good [...]
