We're in an indiefolk mood today, thanks to an increasingly large pile of new material flowing in from fan recommendations, the labels, and the blogosphere at large. As such, there's nothing particularly rare here today, just a bunch of great web-scavenged covers, most of which had their coming out party long after we originally featured the songwriters that first made them famous -- making them a perfect fit for yet another long-awaited edition of our longstanding (Re)Covered series here on Cover Lay Down. At [...]

You Should Know If you love indie music (which you probably do, since you're on this blog) and you're like me and think that cello is one of the more elegant instruments out there, then mark your calender for August 12th, which is the date Portland Cello Project's self-titled album is set to be released. The 8-16 member cello ensemble affectionally known as PCP by fans has become an important thread in the fabric of Portland's indie music scene. By collaborating with talented local musicians such as Laura [...]

Two rather brief Cut of the Day selections for your listening pleasure: The first: The Portland Cello Project plays at the Doug Fir tomorrow night (Saturday, that is, so they're going up against the HUSH show at Aladdin. That's unfortunate for both parties). This is one more song off the group's exclusive EP, which you can buy at the DF show. It's with Horse Feathers, the moving acoustic trio that will play alongside the PCP at the show—it's called "Mother's Sick": [...]

According to Portland Cello Project co-founder Doug Jenkins the purpose of the collective is to provide support to local artists and give them an orchestral accompaniment, in addition to exposing people to new music via the cello. Working with Northwest musicians like Laura Gibson and Weinland, the Portland Cello Project sees tunes such as Britney Spear's "Toxic" re-imagined with a new regality that permeates the album's twelve tracks. Certainly by the time this one is over, you will see the cello in a light far removed from stiffs and upturned noses. The Portland Cello Project release their self-titled [...]
Toxic is one of the greatest hits of the tabloid-most-wanted Britney Spears. Written by Bloodshy & Avant, Cathy Dennis, and Henrik Jonback for her 4th album In the Zone, the hit was recorded by several artists in different music styles. I like this music so much, but I think the Mark Ronson version kicks [...]
In effort to raise awareness about upcoming releases as well as finding a place for the numerous submissions we get, this post continues our weekly purging of free and legal MP3's for your listening enjoyment. The number of tracks will fluctuate each week depending on the songs uncovered or sent. It's our hope that you'll find a new favorite or another release to keep your eyes on. Perhaps more than any track I've ever posted, this surprisingly fitting and beautifully lush version of Bon Jovi's "Dead or Alive" sorta speaks for itself. PCP replaces Jon's voice with a delicate (what else!) cello, and a flood of strings surround that central voice. Still, is PCP doing "Wanted Dead or Alive" any different from those cheapo String Tribute to Led Zepplin discs? Well, yeah. It's a lot different. Aside from the musical subtleties of this arrangement far outstripping the whorish tendnecies of those "tribute" discs, the Cello Project has its own role within the [...]

A bit of a change up for you today, a sonic break from the bangs, bleeps and loud guitars, something new from the Portland Cello Project . PCP is an ensemble of cello players who has as much reverence for classical music as they do for classic rock, playing everything from Beethoven to Britney Spears and all points in between. Often collaborating with members of Portland's thriving music scene, their live performances can have upwards of 16 people on stage, what I'd have to call a cello orchestra I suppose. Doug Jenkins, [...]

"We strive to expose people to new music through the cello; support local musicians and give them the opportunity to work with an orchestral accompaniment; and to make Portland, Oregon the cello capital of the world, perhaps one day changing its name to Celloland." - Portland Cello Project co-founder, Doug Jenkins Well, if there is ever a national referendum on the topic, you've got my vote Doug. Although Finnish cello-metal quartet Apocalyptica might argue the point with you. What [...]

" We strive to expose people to new music through the cello; support local musicians and give them the opportunity to work with an orchestral accompaniment; and to make Portland, Oregon the cello capital of the world, perhaps one day changing its name to Celloland ." - Doug Jenkins , Portland Cello Project Apparently I like the cello a whole lot more than I ever realized until lately. Which is saying something, because damn if I don't love me some good cello [...]
There aren't that many people who truly get the joke behind Times New Viking 's name. And it's for these folks that we'll listen to (My Head)/RIP Allegory today. Os Mutantes getting back together? You better believe it, baby. Here's their new Mutantes Depois . Lovely song entitled Because, Two Candles by Rocketship Park . Who doesn't like a good cover, especially when it comes from the Portland [...]

"Getting back to basics." It's the ultimate sloganeered cliché to justify the need for a camping trip. I've been hearing that one more and more over the past year or so from friends, family, acquaintances, all apparently in need to reconnect with nature, to escape the urban pace, if only for a weekend. And we're talking a real deal camping trip, not a cushy RV, facilities-strewn, bring-your-generator-to-plug-y our-Xbox camping trip. I'm talking about tents and firewood and hiking. As for me, that "back to basics" credo is insufficient to get me to camp, for [...]
