photo by John Vettese Born out of a shared love of '90s dreampop and shoegaze touchstones (you know the ones: Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine), Philly-based quintet Ports Of Call moved stridently out of the haze on their latest EP, Fractals . Released earlier this year on brilliant orange vinyl, it finds the band embracing jangling, effervescent pop hooks—a progression that continues with the new songs premiered in their Key Studio Session. Heck, they even played a number called "Pop Song" (though I'm partial to their performance of "Ballinora" from [...]
Philly's Ports Of Call is fighting the good fight. After releasing the full length Like Thieves in 2008, the quintet toured and then took some time off; now, the band has regrouped, and is playing local venues in support of its new LP, Fractals . Despite having fewer tracks, Fractals sounds more fully developed than Like Thieves , and instills hope that the band might soon find success beyond the Philadelphia area. While most bands are uncomfortable talking about their influences, the members of Ports Of Call embrace the [...]
After taking a hiatus, Ports of Call have regrouped with a bit of a lineup change and just released a new EP last month titled Fractals , which was produced by Jeff Zeigler ( Uniform Recording ) and is available on limited edition 12" orange vinyl and digitally HERE . The band still has elements of dream pop and shoegaze (that helped them become former Deli Featured Artists of the Month) but with more of an indie rock edge. They'll be opening for much-buzzed-about Smith Westerns (Fat Possum) and recently signed label mate Unknown Mortal Orchestra [...]
Photo by Tom Mosher Of all the artists out there paying homage to Kevin Shields, Philly's Ports of Call is among the most faithful. The band's 2008 full-length debut Like Thieves… nailed the aching tremolo guitar and drifting, gauzy vocal haze of My Bloody Valentine's "Soft As Snow," while matching it with solid, memorable songwriting (that really important part that so many others overlook). After a few years off to regroup and reconfigure, the band is back with its recently-released EP, Fractals . Today's Philly Local Phile spotlights its opening track, [...]
I went a slightly different direction for 2008's songs list - there's some crossover with yesterday's albums list because my favorite three albums happened to have my favorite three songs of the year, but other than that I tried to spotlight 20 singles and album tracks by artists who didn't quite stand out enough across the board to crack the albums best-of. Get your left-field on after the jump and remember, the Rawkblog pledge drive ends this weekend - please give now ! 5. Hayden - "The Van [...]

l Ports of Call is a Philadelphia five piece conjuring up atmospeheric shoegaze of epic proportions. The band began last year when Thomas Mosher (guitar, vocals) and Tom Fleischer (guitar) were writing a lot of material but needed a band. Daniel Salerno joined on drums, and Carolynne McNeel (of Rarebirds and Grammar Debate) added vocals, guitar, keys, and violin, much to the delight of the founding members. Bassist Stephanie Hesser rounds out the group and joined after their debut album was recorded, replacing former bassist Andrew Grossman. The band's [...]
Shoegaze will always remain one of my favorite genres of music, even if I get away from it from time to time, it's something that I always come back to. Granted, shoegaze and dreampop saw their heyday in the early nineties, but today many acts continue to reinvent and push the envelope with the genre. I was reading an interview with Soundpool (one of the bands featured in this post) about the relation among shoegaze, electronica, and indie-pop becoming more familiar in Japan. One of the group's members stated that there has been "a significant change in [...]
There is no need for me to stress the importance of atmosphere within music. Anyone who has heard any quality music, from classical works to punk or shoegaze, understands that it is a vital component in building up a dedicated fan base, with a song's "catchiness" obviously not being the only factor in what creates an admirable result. As simple as it may be for many musicians to hum a melody and relay it into instrumental form, capturing a sense of atmospheric believability is a skill that cannot simply be taught. Artists who intentionally seek a certain atmosphere are very [...]
