If you look up at the above picture you'll see a band who look like they have a bit of fun. That band, in case you hadn't picked by the post-title, is Portugal. The Man . And that photo is probably the only time you'll see the band being anything but serious. They are just one of a handful of artists that I have been following ever since their beginning and have witnessed, this one in-particular, only continue to rise up and up with each release and secure a spot safely as one of my favorite bands. Their now [...]
by eliza czander Portugal. The Man just released their third full-length album. And it's fucking impressive. If you aren't yet familiar with the foursome from Wasilla, Alaska, get on that shit. If you Wikipedia the group they're defined as indie-progressive, but sit down and listen to Censored Colors and it will evoke more of an emotion, less of a characterization. This band's sound can't be tied down to a genre, but there's a shit ton of imagery floating in and out of every [...]

This week, we've got two very different interpretations of pop from two very different locales. New York City's Mirror Mirror bring a cosmic edge to the ambiance of 60s songwriting with their debut album, The Society for the Advancement of Inflammatory Consciousness . And we also try to fit in as many tracks as possible from Portugal. The Man's new LP, Censored Colors . The Alaska band manages to blend glam and progressive rock elements into a dynamic and well-produced record. We've also got new music from Carlon, Mothlite, the Near Year, [...]

Saturday, September 20, 2008 I've been staring at my computer screen for hours over the course of the last week. As many of you know, I work for Light In The Attic, and our most recent release is a pretty bizarre one (Stephen John Kalinich, spoken word poet produced by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys) and I've been slogging about in the lowest of places to try and get the word out. What places? you might ask: Beach Boys fansites. These garishly colored, severely outdated sites are world unto themselves, filled with nerds of [...]

The highlight for this week is The Tide Will Swallow Us Whole , the debut album from former Haste The Day vocalist Jimmy's new band Trenches . It's well worth picking up. Aside from that, there are live releases from Avenged Sevenfold and Unwritten Law and new stuff from Jonezetta , All That Remains , Hootie and the Blowfish's Darius Rucker (whaaaaaat?) and Portugal, the Man . :: Adventure , Adventure (Carpark) :: Alexander Tucker , Portal [...]

Miniature Tigers and Straylight Run - two groups that are due, and that info isn't just some fantasy player intuition. Just listening to a few of their newest tracks, "Cannibal Queen" from Miniature Tigers and "Wait and Watch" from Straylight Run, signals a possible maturization akin to groups on the rise. With their new album, Tell It To the Vocano , the Phoenix group of Miniature Tigers continues forming a classic pop-indie sound honed around a tightly-spun recording process. With frontman Charlie Brand setting the mood [...]

I should confess before I start this review that I became a fan of Portugal. The Man after their strangely awesome 2007 release Church Mouth. It was an unexpectedly great album produced by some very unusual songwriting methods. Apparently, the band showed up to the studio with a collection of jams and riffs and then pieced together songs while writing lyrics on the spot. Not exactly songwriting 101, but it worked; the Alaskan trio managed to craft some impressive tunes. Back after only a year (seems like this has happened quite a bit recently), [...]

This month has proven itself to be an interesting enough month for new releases. You have the new Apollo Sunshine, Damien Jurado, Jesu, Mitch Hedburg, Tricky, Jem, TV on the Radio , and some band called Metallica . However, two in particular have caught me by the ear. Portugal. The Man's "Censored Colors" and The Sound of Animals Fighting's " The Ocean and The Sun ." Both albums show significant growth from their original material while staying true to the individual sound they have [...]

In recent months, a lot of attention has been turned towards the 8,000 person shithole village of Wasilla, Alaska. Perhaps you haven't heard, but Republican Veep nominee and utterly airheaded, neo-con face of evil Sarah Palin was once mayor of this tiny little collection of suburban streets and broke down cars. Yet, for those in the know (which you are about to be), Wasilla, Alaska is actually home to a force of nature far, far more exciting then just some air-headed soccer mom on a exaggerated power trip. It's home to PORTUGAL. THE MAN. [...]

Alaska is a cold place that's dark for half of the year and when you think of all that shadowed snow, it doesn't sound very colorful and exciting. Fortunately, that doesn't stop the creativity of Portugal. The Man who offer a bright palette of sounds on their third full-length album Censored Colors. Censored Colors is [...]

Photography by Tsuru Another mixtape already? Fuck yeah! Three songs that I'm just stuck-stuck on, pushed me, near-begged me, to get another going. This all happened yesterday as I kept tinkering with my ipod to hear the 3 songs over and over. Said "fuck it", built a playlist, started adding more songs, before you know it, I had a full CD worth of amazing tracks, pull a recent photo of mine that seemed to capture it all, a little flow tinkering in the playlist, and BLAM-O!
