In early April, Sherry and I were in the Twin Cities visiting relatives and I managed to get a trip to the Mecca of Records known as the Electric Fetus . While I was flipping through their used vinyl and discount bins an unfamiliar soundtrack was playing overhead. Sherry asked me what it was, and I wasn't sure but I was as enthralled as she was with the very mellow and groovy music. At one point I found myself singing along with one of the tracks, "You don't know how to ease my pain, you don't know..." I asked the [...]
A while ago I challenged myself to listen to every CD in my collection from beginning to end. This is a challenge that will most likely take a few years, but I've already found music I didn't even know I had that I love, and I'm re-discovering music I hadn't thought about for a while. So I decided to start a new feature here called "Picks Of The Week" where I take some cool tracks I've heard the past week and post them every Sunday. Hopefully my challenge to myself will help you discover some great music as well. Here [...]
The Urban Playground caught up with P.O.S. (who killed his Taste of MN set BTW) at The Airtime Collection Release Party held a few weeks ago at Phenom Uptown in the Twin Cities. Good stuff all around. I dropped it earlier but I'll also include Urban Playground's recap of the ARTM release.
"Hard work makes you hungry." A perennial eating enthusiast, music publicist Andrew Steinthal recently launched Immaculate Infatuation , a blog that impeccably blends his love of music and food into a zany, surprisingly versatile aesthetic emulsion. Steinthal cannily recruited punk-rapper/ass-kicking guitar maestro P.O.S . to raw/vegan dining gem Pure Food and Wine in New York City to see what would happen if sweet, unassuming vegan chefs and a badass rock star got together and gave each other pointers on how to execute their glorious-and quite different-crafts. Words and photos by our new guest blogger, Erica C. Bowman. Some of hip-hop's greatest underground acts gathered last weekend for the Soundset Music Festival held at Canterbury Park in Minneapolis. Crowd favorites like Brother Ali, Atmosphere, Method Man, Murs and Hieroglyphics ripped the mic, but a few lesser known acts such as Dessa and [...]

Hello from Slug above, and hello from myself. I hope your summers are going well. Yesterday, in it's entirety, was swallowed up by a behemoth of a hip-hop festival known as Soundset . Held in the great state of Minnesota, Soundset attracts fans of independent hip hop from far and wide to a single space where they can all get bad sunburns, spend an excessive amount on food (Cherry Limeade for $6?!?), and most importantly buy t-shirts... kidding. What I meant to say was, most importantly see their favorites perform. Unfortunately, there are so many great acts [...]
![[Watch] – New Video By Dessa – Alibi](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2567004_lg.jpg)
I spoke about Dessa nigh-on three months ago now . If you're into Hip-Hop she brings something fresh to the table, an extremely smart woman who can actually sing and hold a note, but can rap aaaaaaaannnddddd is also just an all-around good person. How many of them exist? You'll have to check out my previous post to find out why, as well as listen to her excellent single "Dixon's Girl", but below you can see her newly released video for "Alibi", another stand-out track from her most recent album "A Badly Broken Code". Music video for "Cry" by the Minneapolis-based collective Gayngs from the band's debut album "Relayted."
Local supergroup GAYNGS played two shows at First Avenue on Friday to excited crowds of Twin Citizens decked out in prom gear. The night was pretty perfect, and Prince even made a brief appearance (though he didn't play).

Gayngs , the star-studded Minneapolis/Eau Claire, Wisconsin social scene led by producer Ryan Olson (Digitata/Marijuana Death Squad/Building Better Bombs) with contributions from Solid Gold, Bon Iver, P.O.S., Lookbook, Micheal Lewis (Andrew Bird), James Buckley (Mystery Palace), Roma di Luna, Dessa, Rosebuds, Megafuan, Nate Vernon and more. Here's the Godley and Cream inspired/redux clip for "Cry" off their upcoming debut Relayted out on Jagjaguwar, May 11th. Way back in '08 I was obsessed with a little known group from Minneapolis called Doomtree. I was just getting over my fixation with Flex , a song from their False Hopes album, when I heard news of an upcoming release. "Drumsticks" premiered on the group's site a couple weeks later, and the beat blew me away . Its natural sounds with a heavy kick bass made the hairs on my neck stand up. I couldn't wait for the release, and when it rolled around I was in for a surpise... unfortunately, [...]

Words: George Mills. I'm not sure what the mission statement for this project was nearly 2 years ago when it was first conceived by producer Ryan Olson, but I think it's a fairly safe to assume that it wasn't "to fuse bad Moby b-sides with equally underwhelming 70's jazz-rock". Through a combination of odd mixing and just downright bad songwriting however, this album seems to have achieved just that. I'll be honest, a lot of the reason why I'm being so harsh about this album is that I feel cheated. What is most frustrating is that [...]
These guys bring more energy to a live show than anyone else I have ever seen. Can't wait to see both of these fellas at Soundset. spotted at Midwest Broadcast .
If this video doesn't make you want to see Prof or P.O.S. live, I don't know what will.
P.O.S. gave a brief interview at the Zia Records pop-up store on Record Store Day while at Coachella. City Pages blog Gimme Noise posted some reviews of his show, where he debuted his full band to a large-scale audience. Their first official concerts together, though, were in a series of 3 warm-up shows in the Twin Cities. Empty's Tapes was able to get some audio of them performing "Never Better," which I posted below. P.O.S.: "Never Better" (Live at Triple Rock 4/13/10)
