Our friends from Hand Drawn Dracula continue their takeover of Quick Before It Melts today. Wintersleep bandmates Paul Murphy (who, along with brother Michael, makes records as Postdata ) and Loel Campbell (who's also a member of Contrived and Treasure Hunt ) team up to bring us the highlights of their 2011 in an unprecedented QBiM two-part post. [...]

Ok. The final installment. The big hitters. 1:: Fred Squire - March 12 March 12 is full of some of the most beautiful, genuinely sad songs I've ever heard. The songs hit on emotions and fears so real that Fred just can't turn and tell someone, so he writes songs to tell everyone. The songs are grown from women and the drink, but they aren't songs about booze and broken hearts. Fred isn't scared she might not [...]

better late than never. without further delay, The Wild Hunt by The Tallest Man On Earth. If I was compiling this list by the just the amount of times each record spun here, this record would still end up on top. The Tallest Man on Earth (aka Kristian Matsson) shines on his second album with his seemingly effortlessness, melodic sensibility with standouts such as "Love Is All", live favorite "King Of Spain" and "Burden Of Tomorrow". I can't help but recommend this album [...]
Postdata - Tobias Grey from Hand Drawn Dracula on Vimeo . Watch this gorgeous video from Postdata . I was just turned on to this band from my friend Chris over at Indie Music Filter . Remember Wintersleep? That song 'Weighty Ghost' is one of the most beautiful, timeless songs. Well Paul Murphy of Wintersleep, and his brother Michael now make up Postdata- the songs are the result of shared Scotch at their parents home in Yarmouth, N.S. As explained by Paul, "we decided to get together over the course of a [...]

We've missed a couple weeks, but I think it's only right to greet the first Thursday in August with our semi-regular Thursday special, the Video Hits. And we've got a good one for you, three somewhat subdued gems from Bishop Morocco, Postdata, and Pigeon Hole. Old friends who've re-united under the moniker Bishop Morocco, this duo has been discussed by the Ack on the hill before , but their somewhat mesmerizing, and mirror-filled video for Last Year's Disco Guitars, has won me over. There's no winning over where Paul Murphy's Postdata is concerned. The [...]
(photo: killbeat.com) This is a little Paul Murphy prize pack for you, courtesy of our good friends at Killbeat Music . Not only will you be getting Paul's stellar solo album under the moniker Postdata , but you'll be taking home the latest from his band Wintersleep , too! Paul and co. are currently taking a break from the road after having been all over the U.S. in June, but they'll be back at it with a show in Saint John, NB on [...]

So I am a big fan of the band Postdata (brothers Paul & Micheal Murphy) and think that the self titled album from Hand Drawn Dracula is one of the best of the year for me. Even with it being released in January of this year...while some albums start great and fade after a few months, not here. Still a top 10 and looking to remain firmly placed. Well the album now has been blessed with a clear vinyl release that is available at the Hand Drawn Dracula store ( here ). The video is for [...]
It's coming up on the midnight hour Tuesday night and I feel like I've burned my contact lenses right off my eyes staring at the computer screen tonight. if I wore hearing aids (and I might well need some soon) I'm sure I'd have blown them up listening to last minute Polaris Music Prize considerations, too. So my final ballot is pretty much locked in (notice my lack of certainty?), and I'm honestly "listened out" right now, but tomorrow's (i.e. Wednesday's) post is yet to be completed so... here I am. I'm keeping my cards close to my [...]

For Canadian music bloggers lucky enough to be selected to submit a ballot for our Nation's coolest music prize , the last few days have been a hectic time. With so many people screaming suggestions, it would be hard not to revisit your choices and the names you hear around the ole cyber water cooler before hitting submit. As it was, my list was pretty locked in and really, the only shifting was for the coveted number 5 spot. Being the transparent blog we are, I figured I'd share my picks with you [...]
Welcome to the Night Sky , the 2007 album from Nova Scotia's excellent smart-rockers Wintersleep , was not only one of our favorite albums of the year it also won the band a Best New Artist Juno and solid notice from a variety of hipster scribes. Few indie collectives have both the grandly anthemic scope capable of an eight-minute opus and thoughtful, skillfully rendered songcraft in their arsenal and Wintersleep tracks " Archeologists " and [...]
It's never nice to hear about the passing of another music blog, especially when it's a Canadian-based blog like QBiM that's worked hard at spreading the word and the love. So I'm sad to report that It's Not The Band I Hate It's Their Fans has decided to call it a day. In his last post this past Saturday, Bobby bowed out of the blogiverse with dignity and grace. Here's wishing him the best in his future endeavours. Life here at QBiM goes on though, and so we continue with [...]

Postdata 's self-titled debut is a intimate set of hushed bedroom folk that has become one of my favourite albums so far in 2010. I've written several articles about the disc, most notably an interview with songwriter Paul Murphy over at Exclaim! . I also reviewed his show at the Media Club here in Vancouver and wrote a quick news piece when his band Wintersleep released a new single on Monday. I officially declare March 2010 "Murphypalooza." The new Wintersleep single is called "New Inheritors," and [...]

Our exclusive Northern Exposure column highlights some great tracks by homegrown artists playing Canadian Music Week's CMF . Fans of Canadian music will know Paul Murphy as the frontman of Halifax band Wintersleep , who continue to garner [...]

So after yesterday's Calgary Music Scene post - why not do something else Calgary? Done. So next week (March 18th to be exact) there is a concert going on here in Calgary with a fantastic line up of Canadian talent! What may you ask is this event? Well Postdata and Julie Fader along with the local Clinton St. John (of The Cape May) will be performing and I will definitely be there. You should be too. Ticket Give-Away So here is the deal - [...]

djchampion.net Canadian Musicfest is almost upon us and, while I'd intended to hold off on preview-y things till next week, some of this just won't keep. Actually, it probably would, but I needed something to post today and this needed to go out... so. I'll start, actually, with some giveaways. The typical way of doing CMF/CMW is via the wristband, which grants access to many of the clubs throughout the week, so long as it's not at capacity, and in recent years the whole "limited wristbands" policy - which had been [...]

Kinda been a hectic last bit with the various world events, personal events and upcoming events. What is it of which I speak? Well, glad you asked. How about those Olympics? Pretty sweet in my opinion, but I tend to quickly jump on board of sports I would shun in any other forum...I dunno, all of a sudden I am a fiend for biathlon for 2 weeks every 4 years! I, like a true and proud Canadian, enjoyed the Gold Medal Hockey game this past Sunday and I am even glad it went to overtime for the win. [...]

Talk about a solid lineup and a solid venue. Paul Murphy's new personal outlet - Postdata - is locked and loaded on my Polaris ballot, and throwing the engaging Julie Fader and rock steady Brian Borcherdt into the mix makes this one of the best shows that will come out way this year. The three acts are going to spend an intimate evening playing for 60 - that's right, only 60 - people at The Sonic Temple . In such a small space, with a respectful crow you will get to [...]

I don't think I can sum up my Valentine's Day in a few words. I'm just glad I was able to spend the time with someone who I connect with. Whether it was eating crepes on 4th street in San Rafael, a massive pillow fight in San Francisco, or cuddled up on the futon watching Moon (which was brilliant); I can safely say I like where I am right now. Here's to another day appreciating the company of another... Download Mix Here... Listen to Mix Here... [Audio clip: view full post [...]
