In a world where ones own haircut and apparel take precedence over concern for your unfortunate brethren it is heartwarming to discover artists like Power Animal signed to labels like Human Kindness Overflowing. For just last year the pair recorded and put out an album called 'Exorcism' with 100% of the proceeds going to local charities in their hometown of Philadelphia. To understand the worth of that recording you'd have to appreciate how much Power Animal's Keith Hampson put into it. Struck by a debilitating illness (bizarrely known as Mono) he put 'Exorcism' together while lying prostrate again his sickbed [...]

The great thing about our 'Under The Influence' series is that we get to pick the brains of the artists that we love in an attempt to find out what influences their music. Sometimes the connection between the artist and the music they list in this feature is a little less obvious than you'd expect, but that's the beauty of music, at least when you talk about artists that aren't afraid to experiment with their sound. The latter definitely applies to Power Animal , the 'North East Philly' band led by Keith Hampson. They list [...]

Like the title says. A mix for a friend. Bachelorette , Antwon , Grimes , and a bunch of songs that have either already made it on to monthly mixes, or probably will be in the near future. Stream it on 8tracks: http://8tracks.com/topomodesto /mix-for-lena [ cover art by Moebius (AKA Jean Giraud) ]

The words of Power Animal may be obscured by a boatload of studio manipulation, but what they're communicating is always clear: This is Feel-Good Music. Evident from Power Animal's major-key synth hooks and disco percussions is a love of the kind of nostalgic sentimentality bands like M83 and Passion Pit maximize with unrelenting waves of keyboard and second-wave British invasion bands like The Kooks channel into plain-spoken love narratives. But unlike these late-aught champions of electronic-indie, Power Animal don't do "pleasant" by blending every pleasant thing they could think of into an overwhelming pastiche. Instead of indulging dream-pop's [...]

Fresh from the exotic wilds of Philadelphia, comes Lushlife 's new remix of Power Animal 's "Better Water." This remix is featured beside 4 additional remixes and 6 new songs on Exorcism , Power Animal's upcoming release on Crash Symbols . While the original track made a splash last year with its easygoing, dynamic groove and memorable remolding of an especially earnest Willie Nelson sample, the remix takes it to a whole other ethereal level. Flowing seamlessly in between the funky touches of the drum-driven sections and patches of glittering haze dominated by what [...]
Power Animal’s original "Exorcism" gradually builds into this whole everybody-drumming thing, with Keith Hampson's talk-sung affirmations to forgive those who've hurt me and love those deserving attracting what sounds like a small army of dumpster-tappers ... read more

Last week, Philly psychedelic popsters Power Animal premiered the title track from their forthcoming Exorcism EP on Soundcloud. The cassette release, which drops on Feb. 21, is worth seeking out for a few reasons. One, it's a great collection of the whimsical, imaginative songwriting we've come to expect from Keith Hampson and his collaborators. Two, it also collects solid remixes by the likes of Lushlife and Golden Ages. Three, it's for a worthy cause. The EP is being released on Hampson's charitable label, Human Kindness Overflowing , and money from each purchase of the cassette [...]

Last night's lineup at Johnny Brenda's with Balam Acab , Power Animal , and Gracie can probably be best described as an evening of emotive experimental dance music. It's always interesting to see how bedroom recording artists transfer their tunes to a live setting on stage in front of an audience. Gracie (a.k.a. Andrew Balasia) brought along his keyboard, a bassists, and a guitarist/percussionist/backup vocalist. Their set certainly had more energy than you'll find in the eerier recordings, which was a good thing. The trio was able to lock into grooves giving a more humanistic feel [...]

It's not hidden at all that I have a lot of love and respect for the work of Power Animal (a.k.a. Keith Hampson). There is simply something about his brand of experimental pop that gets my endorphins flowing and makes me want to share the joy with others. Now, if only Hampson would release his new EP Exorcism already, it was originally scheduled to come out before the end of summer, but as you can tell by the changing climate, that time has come and gone. Hopefully it's actually a good sign that the delay is [...]
One of our favorite local chillwave artists, Gracie , just released a new song "Quilts" which you can download for free below. It's a collaboration with Steffaloo . Gracie is performing with Power Animal and Balam Acab tomorrow night at 9 p.m. at Johnny Brenda's ; tickets to the 21+ event are $12.

Tonight is the night - it's our 3rd Anniversary Bash, and we'll be celebrating it at Kung Fu Necktie with Dangerous Ponies , Orbit to Leslie , The Homophones , Power Animal , and Botany ! Yes, POWER ANIMAL was added to the lineup to bring even more joy to your life, and he brought along his current tour mate Botany to warp your mind. The Deli's own Adam G. (XPN2) will also be helping to build the soundtrack for our evening. It's going to be rad. We know. You should be there. We will [...]

WQHS (Penn Student Radio) are ready to kick off what will hopefully be one of many seasonal concerts at The Rotunda tonight. And they have definitely used those Ivy League funds to put together a buzz-worthy lineup to help you forget that the event is dry. Brooklyn's Tony Castles will be headlining the bill, but Philly's own Work Drugs may be the one piquing the student body's interest. The local act will be performing their last all ages show of the year so all our under 21 readers should swing by this evening. You'll also be treated [...]
